The atmosphere, lore, challenge and mystery is what makes FromSoftware games great. They are truely unique, especially given that they have effectively created a new "Souls-like" genre of video game. I was initially put off buying the game as it seemed pointlessly gory and the fantasy beasts didn't interest me. However, once I'd discovered the masterpiece that is Dark Souls 3, I was craving more of the same. I very quickly realised I was wrong to dismiss this game. It delivers just like DS3. The choice to remove shields and add the ability to rally back your health is a master stroke! Two aspects that are not masterstrokes however are: - Having a finite health source, therefore farming is a thing, a really tedious thing - Having to teleport back to the hubworld before teleporting again, just make it one step These two points caused too much frustration to give this game a perfect score, but it deserves a lot of praise. The creatures fit very well with the story. The story is sparse but the lore is really effectively at developing the mysterious setting. This game creates an incredible atmosphere and has the player in awe, fear and euphoria throughout.

This is a perfect game for VR. Quickly you are in diving under bridges, slaloming trees and lamposts, its just a fun time with no motion sickness and you soon just ignore the FoV changes. The mini games / challenges offer a really good variety and has a good learning curve. Flying through check points is for the first time a lot of fun, the duels with other birds is basically dog fighting and its great. Some mini games are over-used and infuriating though, most notably the tunnels! The fast paced flying is actually very intuitive and prevents boredom. The collectibles give purpose to your aimless flying around to which is fun on its own anyway. The multiplayer is great fun too, I'd like to see more game modes here though. A solid VR game and enjoyable for just casually being a bird and for completing varied challenges. The variety of the challenges does eventually diminish late in the game and there was more potential with multiplayer. With a lot of VR games being short experiences, this has been the longest I've spent on a VR game to date ~ 15 hours.

Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration7
Jan 28, 2017
This game does the tomb raiding really well, but has a rather bland story and is not much of a challenge. The design of the tombs I love, it was what I loved most about the reboot and the atmosphere here is fantastic. The fight mechanics are tight and crisp, the bow is awesome. It's lack of an intriguing storyline relying on ridiculous supernatural plot is even more obvious that before. Uncharted 4 improved a great deal in this area and I really hope this does too in future installments. The side quests never felt like that added any story, but to add lots of checklists to an area. I have a tendency to be a completionist, I found everything in the TR reboot, but I feel all Square Enix have done is add checklists and think this that adds content, I didnt bother to attempt them it this time. The game is lacking in difficulty too, often there are just too many enemies from everywhere, but bizarrely you take very little damage. The casing point, in an end game battle my controller died, I was able to go to pick up my spare controller, sync it and still not die. Maybe fewer harder enemies? In short, I love this type of game, the treasure hunting was done very well, the tombs & crypts were impressive. The lack of a realistic or engaging storyline and difficulty meant that that finishing the game was of little interest.

A simple but strange sounding concept but the gameplay is really fun. The PS4 needs more couch coop games like this and it is one that frequently requested by friends. The game is fun, rewarding and difficult to master. This game has little variety and new game modes, yet lots of hours have been spent in this game. A classic, fun and simple game with good couch coop but is limited in scope that would earn it a higher score.

This is a nice and intriguing title with a unique gameplay. It successfully creates a story with no words. The way you do communicate is simple and effective as is the way the artwork and visions subtly provide information of a civilization which serves to generate more mystery about them. These are powerful touches and the gameplay is varied and solid. Aside from reliving a few well crafted moments, there isn't much to be gained from replaying this game. The first playthrough was for the most part bemusing, it could be slow in parts but was generally enjoyable. This game is nice way to spend an evening or two, though that may be all.

Until Dawn: Rush of Blood7
Dec 11, 2016
This game is straight to the point, a horror game designed to make you tense and delivers on a lot of jumps scares. I am glad my neighbours don't have kids as I have cursed very loudly playing this game. It is also great to watch a friend react to this too! Sitting in the cart looking are the guns in your hands feel really realistic with the Move controllers and because the track is mostly straight its easier on the stomach. The main frustration with the game lies with the difficulty. I'm not saying you shouldn't be able to die that defeats the point but it should be easier. On many of the levels I died in the same place multiple times, you then have to relive the same jumps scariest and gruesome scenes, which is now just unpleasant and the initial scare is replaced with irritation. Particularly when friends try out a level they just give up at this point if they fail a few times because the adrenaline is lost and replaced with frustration. Ultimately this is a fun ghost train that creates tension and fear throughout. VR obviously has good potential for horror and this delivers the cheap thrills.

The Playroom VR8

This game is fun in both single player and for co-op with friends and family, it has a lot of variety and is free. This game to VR is most like what Wii Sports was for the Wii, a fun way to introduce the console to friends. To be fair though it does have less replayability. The single player Robot Rescue really should have a game in its own right. Not only does it prove platformers actually work really well in VR but its possibly the most likeable character in a platformer since Crash Bandicoot. This cute robot is just better than the characters in Wayward Sky and LittleBIGPlanet. The best of the couch co-op games is Ghost House. It's the classic game where one person gives instructions to another and this is a very effective manifestation of that. It will cause a group to battle to see who is the fastest pair. Monster Escape is more humorous than anything else, an interesting perspective and you have a tail! The Wanted game is fairly basic, good for adding variety but not too much else. The same is also true for Cat and Mouse, though you are probably unlikely to play this one as much as the others. The whole experience is short but entertaining with some games leaving you craving much more.

PlayStation VR WORLDS6
Dec 11, 2016
This is a good starter game for VR because it shows you what works and what doesn't. There are 5 mini games but some are certainly better than others. I will give a brief summary of each but first I need to say how good the home screen is. I wont spoil why, but the interactive nature of the home screen is actually really good! From best to worst: The London Heist - The ability to interact and play with almost everything in the environment is just a lot of fun. The gameplay can be a quite tricky and a little buggy, but it does look and feel real and is enjoyable throughout. Danger Ball - My impression is that this is very much overlooked. Sure it is basically 3D Pong but its great fun and really challenging! It is a simple, fun and immersive mini game. Ocean Descent - This solely focuses on the immersion and its very good at it. I'd just jump straight to the shark encounter one though. Scavengers Odyssey - This does show that free movement doesn't work too well. This may have been a side effect of a larger issue, the graphics are just a bit blurry. Even standing still looking at what should be epic scenery felt underwhelming. VR Luge - A simple concept but everything is just too fast and blurry. It just doesn't really work. A good introduction showing the variety of VR but if you are looking for a fun set of mini games to introduce VR (like what Wii Sports was to the Wii), I'd recommend the free Playroom VR instead.

This game is pretty overrated in my view. Each of the five main levels is enjoyable and the music is good. I completed most of them first try though and there is little replay value. Area X was billed as giving the player complete freedom and a new experience everytime, when in fact its not. You can now navigate the character but its easy to find the walls of this world, in the end every playthrough is basically the same. The visuals and soundtrack are impressive and immersive, unfortunately the title is just too short and repetitive to make this game anything more than average.

No Man's Sky6
Dec 11, 2016
This game is great for exploration aspects, which is how it was designed. The high initial price tag and ridiculous hype created much more negative reaction than it deserves. The greatest aspect of the game is that you can name the planets and fauna (and flora is your really keen) and know someone else may discover it (though it should be easier for someone to discover your planets). When I was doing it properly I found I actually came up with cool interesting names for all the planets and animals in a system. I think I could actually be a good explorer after all! Other times it was a laugh to see how obscene I could make the name and have it pass the profanity filter! This by far the best aspect of the game. Whilst there is one really good aspect to the game, there are a number of negatives. The grinding is very tedious, I never bothered with any of the new technologies anyway. The space battles were OK, but mostly I wished they would go away, I wasn't harming anyone. There was also a lot of reading required! For all the well publicized tedious irritating aspects this game has one brilliant aspect in the exploration that is overlooked. This game would not interest most people, but if you has some interest in being able to name the animals and planets in our galaxy, this is a great simulator. By now this game must be a sensible price and the tedious aspects are probably worth baring for this!

The idea of being of being a part of the big fight is cool but the impact you have on the galactic battle is so small that it has no impact and you are just wasting your time. The gameplay is OK, the shooting isn't great and you have to hope the others want to go where you want to go as you all share the screen. Each game is basically exactly the same but slightly different enemies and difficulties. The likelihood of even joining other players was actually rather low, it kept failing. When you do make it through a multiplayer game, you typically add 1-3 points each. The total required for each battle is in the millions! So the gameplay is average, the achievement is nothing and there was generally alot of waiting around with the multiplayer aspects.

DiRT Rally6

A great and challenging rally game, though as with many games of this type it's easy to lose interest after a few championships. Technically this feels like a very good game and rewards concentration, for this it deserves credit. As you progress you get slightly faster cars, slightly harder challenges and slightly longer events. Other than these small increments it lacks any new challenges or reason to stay. The online mode does add extra scope with the daily events etc..., but again there is little reward for progressing. This game is fun to pick up occasionally for some high intensity rallying but doesn't offer much long term.

An enjoyable game with an intriguing story and art style. I liked navigating with an actual map and compass and communicating solely via the radio! These were nice aspects to game but in general the game was lacking in excitement. There were some nervous moments, which was good, though the suspense was never high enough that I felt I should recommend this to friends. It was an interesting game, though short and somewhat forgettable.

This game is crafted beautifully but is hindered by some frustrating mechanics. The setting and atmosphere is stunning. It is your idyllic British village, I have been through many in real life yet this has an added serenity. This is in part due to how nothing is out of place in this world but equally a result of the emptiness. The soundtrack is incredibly powerful that fits very well with the somber mystery, the slow pace and the serene setting. This soundtrack really adds to the moment! The slow pace is deliberately making the gamer slow down and take in the scene at a leisurely pace, I actually commend the developers for this, whilst it can be frustrating it ensures the game is enjoyed in the way it was designed. The real frustration lies in a number of mechanics. The save points are very spread out and you can easily miss seeing the save icon, to not know if this game was last saved 4 or 40 minutes ago is poor, even 4 is too much. There were also times when I lost the path of the story and wandered pretty aimlessly until I found the correct path to trigger the next dialogue. It was not always clear who was the main focus of the story for that given moment. In general the storyline was somewhat abstract and vague, though still intriguing. This game is to be enjoyed at a slow pace immersed in its dulcet sounds and the haunting beauty of the landscape and mystery. This is what makes the game powerful and worth persisting with the frustrating aspects and loose storyline.

Dark Souls III10

This is not only my game of 2016, but the best game I've played for a long time! I bought the game rather tentatively, having never played a Souls game, the challenging nature tempted me but I perceived the game as a medieval fantasy which would not normally interest me. Having now completed the game, I am so glad I tried it, it was incredible all the way through! I would not define the game as a medieval fantasy but instead as a Gothic Underworld masterpiece. The Gothic atmosphere and setting is one of the greatest and lasting aspects of the game. I no longer look at a cathedral or church in the same way, I am expecting there to be skeleton dogs and undead creatures around every corner. The tension in the game is immense, when you get past a tough enemy and enter a new area low on estus with lots of souls you tread very carefully in search of that next glorious bonfire. I loved that tension! The boss fights are to be feared and embraced! Most of the bosses and incredibly cool and well designed, the battles really reward a patient and calm playstyle, to get past many of the bosses you must first understand the boss before you can pass. Whilst bosses can certainly be frustrating, the reward for defeating them is euphoria! It is worth saying that the story and the lore of DS3 is never clear. This is far from a negative strangely but one of its strongest aspects of the game! The description with each new item, weapon or boss soul contains an extra piece of the jigsaw into the plot, the history and the myth! The jigsaw feels huge and every piece unravels just a little more, it becomes more of a search to unlock the mysteries of this land! I found myself enjoying this game in unique ways, it is the only game I have ever supplemented with watching a Let's Play on YouTube. When you defeat a tough boss or area, there is nothing more satisfying to re-live it by watching somebody else struggle. I also have watched videos detailing the lore behind the game and still there is so much mystery you can lose yourself in it. What makes this game so great is the depth behind the lore, the bosses, the items and the setting. It has created one of the coolest and richest worlds full of myths, mysteries, awe and dread. From Software. My Thanks!

This game is very fun and entertaining with a lot of attention to detail. The open world however felt restrictive and repetitive with little character or interesting places to explore. The storyline is good, but one of the first games were I think the story was too long and became monotonous. The sci-fi elements were pretty ridiculous, a common but painful pitfall. The amount of depth, soundtrack and humour within the game make it entertaining, though it is not a game world I expect I will return to.
