Startup Panic2
Dec 19, 2020
tl;dr: Decent game but needs polish and has game-breaking bugs. Its a cute game and you can tell it is a labor of love. It has many great features that other similar games do not. There are also certain aspects of the game that need to be balanced and polished. For example, negative events seem to appear right when the game knows you are doing good financially. These aspects seem unfairly punitive and not random at all like they would be in real life. What if instead you made them rarer and more random to appear genuine; and you make the economics and management aspects of the game harder to balance the game's difficulty? Overall I would say it is fun, however, that is until you run into the game breaking bugs. For example, there is a quest (non-optional "objective") that is forced on you. You have to get all of your feature ratings above 7, which I did. However, the game still ended for me. Why?! All those hours I put into my startup up until that point are now gone! These sort of game-ending events remind me of a time when games had no 'save' functionality and should have no place on the management/simulation genre today. At least make game-ending objectives optional and disclose that failure will result in a game over. Or here is a noble idea.. make it so that when you DO fulfill the requirements of said objectives your game doesn't end! Its almost as if I'm playing the DEMO version of the game and that is the point at which you are kicked off and prompted to buy the full version. But guess what? I paid full price.

Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare 29
Feb 25, 2016
Plants vs. Zombies:: GW2 is a nice improvement over the last game. Being published by EA is no handicap. PROS: The game has huge improvements on the mechanics and content from the 1st game: More characters, more maps, more weapons, and more game modes. If you have the hardware, the graphics are pretty darn good too. They are not necessarily realistic, but the cartoonish animations and special effects are done beautifully. The writing is also pretty nice. It's pretty funny and appropriate for the single player storyline. It gives an identity to the plants and the zombies that you interact with, making the experience rewarding for the fans of the franchise. The singleplayer also gives you an opportunity to learn and get acquainted with the mechanics of the game, different characters, the game modes, etc. Essentially it functions as a tutorial for the whole multiplayer experience this game is known for. Thankfully it doesn't hold your hand, and it gives you an opportunity to gain some coins, level up your characters, and unlock more characters. Which should get you up to date when you head over to the big leagues. Once you get to multiplayer you are going to find an unlimited amount of hours having fun. The amount of content is tremendous and it seems almost unlimited. The game is easy to get into. You can make progress even if you are an absolute n00b. You'll be earning plenty of coins, XP, and making unlocks even if you are not as good. Once you get a good handle of how to play the game, you'll have even more fun and the rewards will also grow. The game also rewards loyalty. You can import your characters all the characters you unlocked in GW1 into GW2. Your rank from the last game gets turned into rewards as well. Obviously, some people are not going to like the game regardless of how good of an improvement it is from the previous installment. This game is obviously not for everyone. But if you like the mechanics of it and played the game back when it came out as a $1.99 app you are likely to enjoy this game. CONS: Obviously, even diamonds have some rough edges. There are a few bugs here and there. Nothing game-breaking so far, and for a game of this scale, the launch and Origin access preview have been completely smooth. The price is also a little steep. But IT IS a AAA game and has more than enough content to justify the price. That said, at some point the price is ought to go down and the game may even go into a humble bundle like it happened last year. So price shouldn't be an issue in the long run. CONCLUSION & TL;DR: Spend $5 on Origin Access and try the game. If you like it buy it. It's obviously not a hard-core shooter but it is plenty of fun and not a reskin of the last installment, like so many games today. 9/10!!

Zoo Park: Run Your Own Animal Sanctuary7
Jul 25, 2014
Zoo Park presents a unique way to play a tycoon game, however, it isn't for everyone. It feels like a port from a mobile game or a Facebook game. However don't let that keep you from playing this game because it has a lot to offer. It is very creative and allows you to experiment with different park designs. It doesn't grab your hand and lead you through the gameplay like many other games, truly giving you a sense of freedom for you to explore the many aspects and elements of the game. That said if you are looking for graphical quality, you will not find it here. If you are looking for unlimited game play possibilities/replay-ability you will have to be very bored or with an empty wallet to find it here; because it is there, it's just not very fun after several playthroughs. That said, this game offers a fun experience that you will enjoy for several hours, and for the price it makes it a worthwhile buy if you enjoy tycoon/simulation games.

Magic: Duels of the Planeswalkers 20152
Jul 22, 2014
Granted, the paperback version could never be recreated in a digital format. However this game makes zero attempts to play as a card game and wants to lead you in an adventure when all you really want to do is play Magic: The Gathering. Surely, It's trying to elaborate and immerse you in the world, but it does so by holding your hand every step of the way (tightly at that). Then comes the worst part: Micro-transactions. If done in a right, quasi-ethical manner it would be all fine and dandy but it almost feels like punishment to play without them. In conclusion, this game is going to make you feel as it its nothing more than a ripoff in the end. Do not spend your money in this game, unless you want to come to the sad realization that a sector of the gaming industry is going down the toilet.
