This game is the definition of a mixed bag. A lot of people online will tell you that the pros outweigh the cons... but that is not really true. The combat and movement feel extremely dated, worse than Halo CE which came out a decade prior. It is hard to tell exactly what the gun is doing. Sometimes you will have the reticle on an enemy and not do any damage and the game doesn't give you any indication as to why. It is a "role-playing" game but you can get locked out of certain missions/storylines due to building your character wrong at the beginning of the game. As a result, a lot of the decision-making in this game is front-loaded, which the game doesn't really tell you. Compare this to Mass Effect, which is contemporaneous, where you constantly get to make decisions that affect the present and the future. Personally, I hate games where you feel weak, so I put a lot of emphasis into my character's combat skills when I started the game. Because the game feels so clunky, I still felt weak and I got locked out of certain quests because I had too many gun points and not enough speech points. There are a lot of little things too that are annoying. You can assign weapons to hotkeys, but if you ever enter a building that temporarily confiscates your weapons, then when you receive them back it undoes all your bindings. Why?? There is a lot of walking in this game. The setting is cool, but desert gets old after a while. The best thing about this game is that you can actually join any faction you want. Not many games let you play as edgy bad guys, which I appreciate. Though, the characters and stories are nothing extraordinary. This game doesn't hold a candle to Mass Effect's storytelling. Reading other reviews, I thought this game would have crazy and zany side quests as you explored around, but that isn't really true. There are 1 or 2, but then there are just as many "oh you can't finish this because you didn't put 50 points into your science skills." It seems like in other reviews people just ignore the flaws. Obviously, this game does some things really well, but it feels very outdated and annoying in 2023. I probably wouldn't recommend this to anyone unless you really think that you will enjoy it.

None of the weapons are fun to use, they're too weak or too slow. The missions are either fetch quests or fighting damage sponge monsters with no HP bars or fighting monsters with annoying mechanics. There's absolutely 0 story, the hub city consists of 5 buildings. Almost every mechanic is designed to be annoying (pickaxes break after ~5 uses, have to do stupid minigame to cook, animation for everything). The monster designs aren't bad, but most of them are just dinosaurs are altered animals like pigs, and they certainly aren't the main attraction. Reading through the Wikipedia, I understand that the online component played a bigger role when it was new, but I don't see how that could have redeemed this mess.

The gameplay is pretty repetitive and the game is 90% cutscenes. It is more like an interactive anime. There is a remastered version so you should probably play that if you are interested.
