Assassin's Creed Shadows9

Fantastic game! The setting is one that people have been requesting for a decade or more and they nailed it. The combat is refined from Valhalla (a huge step up from mirage), the graphics are incredible, the story is engrossing so far, though it’s obvious that Naoe is the main protagonist and Yasuke seems a bit tacked on. Both characters play uniquely enough as to where they are both useful for different tasks. The game world is large but not as daunting as Odyssey or Valhalla. My only real critique is that the homestead runs at 30 fps regardless of the graphics mode but the framerate is rock solid on the PS5 Pro. There’s no combat in the homestead as far as I’ve seen so it’s not a huge issue. After 20 hours, I’m very pleased and it’s easily the best of the modern RPG-like AC games.

Gameplay is minimal and graphics are nothing special, but the story is powerful. It’s free so everyone should check this out. It’s only an hour long. I would like to see more historical games like this.

Wonderful addition to the Horizon FW base game. Decent amount of content, great new location and great story arcs. Easily worth the $20.

Horizon Forbidden West9

Fantastic open world game! Abides by the Ubisoft formula of open world design but nails it far better than Ubisoft has ever done. Incredible graphics, tons of side quests and an absolutely bonkers story that goes places you’d never expect. If you liked the first game, the second is better in every way.

Hogwarts Legacy9

Amazing game! Not perfect, but very ambitious and mostly nails everything it does. Exploring the school is engrossing and exciting! Spell casting is simple but effective! World building is too notch! The controversy regarding Rowling is irrelevant. There is not anything reflective of her beliefs present in this game, as she has nothing to do with this game’s creation other than the lore she established in the movies/books. If you’re a HP fan, this game is a must-play!

Crazy mind bending stories! Basically just 2 visual novels with a dozen or so escape rooms per game but the story is absolutely nuts and will hook you. The second game is better.

The Last of Us Part II10

Not since the first last of us have I analyzed a video game's messages and symbolism so deeply. The entire game from front to back is extremely polished and headphones will immerse you in the world. The story may not be for everyone but an open mind will go a long way. I was not expecting to like a certain character as much as I thought I would. Perspective is key and I really thought that Naughty Dog's gamble with the narrative paid off. I wish it still had difficulty trophies and I didn't care about that certain someone's friends all that much all in all it was a phenomenal ride.

Gone Home9

I felt the game was definitely too short for a $20 price tag, but that doesn't mean it's not worth playing. It's an exploration based first person game about a girl who comes home from college and finds no one is home. You explore the house and try to figure out where everyone is, all the while discovering all sorts of great 90s references and Easter eggs (X-files on VHS, the JFK assassination novel, etc). It's better to go in knowing nothing about the game, as I did, but you will still enjoy it either way. $20 is a little steep and it doesn't have a platinum trophy but if you can get it on sale, I highly recommend Gone Home. Excellent writing, atmosphere, solid graphics and sound design, and a very personal story. If you like games like Everybody's Gone to the Rapture, Firewatch, or Dear Esther, this game is of similar style and quality. Don't listen to the bad user reviews. I have a feeling it's all the same guy because he keeps talking about how "social justice warriors" are the only people who like it. WRONG! He also is an idiot because he gets the plot twist all wrong. No spoilers, but the game's narrative is about your sister, he thinks it's about you, which leads me to think he either wasn't paying full attention or just skimmed a plot summary online without fully absorbing it.
