Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II9
Jul 28, 2012
Okay, I'll be honest with you. At first, having tried the demo and a taste of what DoW2 has to offer, I was sorely disappointed by the drastic change from the gameplay of the original game. HOWEVER, I still decided to give it a shot and I'm so glad that I did. The game plays differently, (there's no building, and more about squad abilities and tactics) but this is by no means bad. The campaign is quite engaging and you're given a number of varied squads to improve and upgrade throughout the game, and that is by far my favourite part. There is choice involved in missions, outfitting and strategy, making an overall flamboyant single player campaign. The co-op is just as sweet. But wait there's more. The cream of the crop is the multiplayer and The Last Stand where you take on hordes of monsters with 2 other heroes. Great additions all way round. Long story short, yes it is a massive departure from DoW1's style but it is fortunately just as good in its own right. I certainly have respect for the devs for changing things up and trying out something new, and I'm glad that they've still kept the strength of this series and its ability to constantly impress me.

Empire: Total War9

The Total War series have always impressed me, mainly due to their vast size, complexity and attention to detail. Empire Total War raises the bar even higher with its absolutely HUGE map size, its meaningful strategy and addictive gameplay. Truly one of the most immersive and engrossing strategy games ever made.

Borderlands8

Although fairly lengthy and fun, Borderlands quickly starts to feel worn out and repetitive. Its a good mix of FPS and RPG elements with exploration but ultimately falls into the common trap of simple 'get mission, read mission, do mission' (which usually involves you whacking some thugs anyway). Nevertheless, it seems to have a good replay value attached to it, and a good fun to play with others. Beware of getting bored FAST.

Aliens Versus Predator8

Where are all the reviews? Even by today's standards, this game is nothing short of excellent. It's scary, a good shooter, holds different variations of gameplay, and stays true to the AvP universe. Don't miss this gem.

Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet9

This is an extremelly addictive, beautiful and innovative game. The campaign is awesome, providing many great gameplay levels, solid puzzles and artistically beautiful backgrounds - which are extremelly varied. To add more, it provides a multiplayer mode called 'Lantern Run' which is a very fun team focused mode that is guaranteed to keep you playing for hours. The only reason why I gave it a 9 and not a 10 is because some of the backtracking gets really tedious after a while (and you have to do quite a bit of it during the campaign [well, i did]), but this does NOT detract from the main enjoyable experience of this game.

L.A. Noire8
Jul 24, 2011
There is a lot wrong and a lot right about L.A. Noire. First, the good.
The newly introduced motion capture on the people that you meet throughout the game is pretty incredible, and is certainly a revolutionary step in gaming. The dialogue is well done, and well acted, some of it even made me chuckle from time to time. The city is beautiful and feels immersive, it's fun to simply drive in one of the many incredible cars that are available to be driven around LA. The graphics are very good, which only strengthens the new face motion capture for a truly wonderful experience when walking around, searching for clues and talking to people.
Unfortunately, this game gets tedious quite fast though. You will feel like you are doing the same thing over and over after every case, and there is a particular desk which has way too many similar cases. After about 2/3 of the game, it will feel more like a drag because the story is also rather forgettable and tedious. Your view of the main protagonist changes significantly and personally, I do not think that he should've been cast in such a bad light closer to 3/4 of the game. The last desk was especially boring, which also took a very strange turn rather abruptly and was also hindered by an attrocious ending. Regarding the actual gameplay, there are certainly some issues with the questioning. Because some actors overact, and some underact, you are sometimes left with quite an unfair judgement of deciding whether someone is lying or telling the truth. Also when presenting evidence to support your accusation, there are many times when picking something would've actually made sense in the context of the case, but did not hold true because there was no flexibility in presenting your evidence and the structure was rather linear, as is most of the game.
Nevertheless, it is a decent game, and definitely one that needs to be tried out by everybody - though it is by no means FOR everybody to enjoy. Those who are expecting a GTA style game - look elsewhere. It is a mostly enjoyable, although quite linear experience, and feels more like a movie than a game. I would give the first half of the game a 9 and the second a 7, so overall I feel it deserves an 8.

One of the greatest gaming deals ever, it comes with 5 great games. Half Life 2 and its episodes are already great on their own, offering great FPS playing, puzzle solving and fun achievements to complete. Portal, though short, is a marvel to play and you'll see just how fantastic it is when you dive into it. Team Fortress 2 is probably one of the greatest online games ever, though it does play better on the PC. Overall - superb package.
