Metroid Prime

One of the most enjoyable and unique gaming experiences to date. Metroid Prime's amazing atmosphere is built up with so many different elements that just absolutely nail the feeling of being a lone bounty hunter on a wasteland of a planet. I know, I know, I'm beating a dead horse by saying it really *feels* like you're playing Samus, but there's no other way to properly say it. The magnificent environments, the visor effects when you're near vapor, water or electricity, the great world building that the Scan Visor offers, one of the best video game soundtracks of our generation and so much more make this game feel absolutely timeless to play (especially on the Trilogy version!). The minus points come from some of the tedious backtracking and from recycling some of the ideas from Super Metroid (but making them better in my opinion, though).

Xeodrifter

While I do understand that Xeodrifter was developed by a very small team, I'd still say it's not worth the 9,99€ price tag, because it can be beaten in about 8 hours and easily much faster if you know what you're doing. By having 4 separate planets and a ship hub the game does arguably make the world feel much bigger than it actually is, because the four different worlds actually amount to 2 areas in Super Metroid. The bosses are also all the same (even the final boss, sorry to burst your bubble) and while the bullet upgrades are satisfying to collect the other upgrades aren't that interesting and/or unique. If you're really bored, sure, buy it, but if you're a broke boy like myself then I wouldn't recommend purchasing this.

An absolute banger from start to finish. Even after 125 hours of playtime on my Switch the game has barely gotten boring to me. I'm still finding new guns, new secret chambers, characters and so much more. I've beaten the game 7 times with different modes and characters and it still feels almost as fresh as when I originally bought it. Don't buy the game if you aren't patient enough to get good with hard games, though, or you'll become as braindead as the users who gave this game a 1 or a 0. It's a roguelike bullethell, obviously it doesn't have extra lives or that many ways to ease the game. It's a tough time, but if you're ready to stick through it, I'd recommend it a lot. Great visuals with the moody lighting, nice pixel art, Cool enemy and gun designs with many easter eggs and references thrown in and with a really fun and engaging Co-Op mode, this game is a blast in every meaning of the word. The only reason I didn't give it a 10 is because it lacks some serious optimization when using certain guns or items or fighting against certain bosses that may drop the frames to under 20 at times, even with the speedy graphics settings on Switch.

This game is on the same level of E.T. The Video Game from 1983. For context, that game almost single-handedly crashed the video game industry in America for two years.

Metroid: Other M

This game is a disappointment on so many levels. It ignores the series' continuity and tries to create and continue its own. Because of this, many fans have counter-ignored it, saying it doesn't belong in the series' storyline. I'm one of those people. The main gripe many - myself included - have with this game is it's absolutely laughable and sometimes even disgusting story; The voice acting is wooden and usually pretty bad. Samus has a "father figure" who was kind of established in Fusion, but in that game he was rightfully thrown there as a mostly unknown side character from Samus' past, but in this game he gets too big of a spotlight, being able to even control what upgrades Samus can use when and where; he also makes Samus look like a helpless b-word since she can't really do anything without "AdAm AuThOrIzInG" him. The story tries to dramatize and cinematize(?) the series for whatever reason, but it definitely didn't work. But don't worry, that's not all Other M has to offer! Of course a thoroughly flawed story must be on top of all the other flawed stuff. Boring gameplay, absolutely horrendous controls, the most dull and uninspired environments the series has ever seen, and the music follows suit. Please don't play this game. Just play the Primes, I did, and they're actually worth it.

"You did it. You crazy son of a female dog, you did it." - Me after realizing Nintendo really just released a battle royale Tetris game To be honest, I don't have that much experience with battle royale games. I don't completely loathe them, but I do think that back in the day they were really oversaturated and -rated. I did play Fortnite for much more hours than I want to admit, and I guess I kind of enjoyed it, but it still was really unpolished and quite boring at times. Tetris 99 doesn't have that problem. It's pure, unadulterated fun; I haven't reached first place, or "Tetris Maximus", a single time, yet it's really, really fun! I don't know what makes the game even more addictive than regular Tetris, probably how you're practically flexing your Tetris skills to about 1-5 other people targeting at you, and the combination of glow and audio effects that always kick in when you get a lot of Tetrises or a T-Spin or whatever, it's always satisfying. Now, you might wonder: why did I give this game a 9/10, the same score that I gave Smash Ultimate? Welp, I think the game really does everything nearly perfectly that it set out to be. The "99" part of the game is pretty much always enjoyable, but it could really benefit of having configurable controls. Also, why is its tiny DLC 10$? It doesn't really make sense, but DLC doesn't constitute as part of the base game, so it's complaints won't lower the game's score any less.

Snipperclips Plus: Cut It Out, Together!

I was divided on "should I give Snipperclips Plus a 6 or a 7?" because I really want to like this game, but sometimes it makes it really damn hard. At best, it's really enjoyable with a friend who takes it seriously and doesn't start Jigsawing you up into tiny pieces at the start of every level. The worst is when the thing I just said ends up happening because the level is really tedious or too long, since the game doesn't have any checkpoints and only includes an autosave feature after every level. TL;DR, the concept is great, fresh and unique, but you should probably reconsider leaving it on the shelf if you don't have many friends to play often with, it's also a bit overpriced to my tastes.

Axiom Verge

A masterpiece in retro-like design, combining old and new gaming mechanics alike and borrowing from some of the medium's most renounced genres, like Metroidvanias and story-driven platformers. A great story, beautiful gameplay and a lot of cool vistas and a jamming soundtrack makes Axiom Verge come to life in an oddly eerie way. The only things that could be better is that some of the backtracking is a bit tedious for two reasons. For one, the main protagonist, Trace, could move a bit faster, and second, there could be a bit more of that classic Super Metroid level design where the maps are designed to go around to the hub-like part of each area to speed up traveling throughout the world. The second meaningful flaw of this game is that some of the collectibles are the "poke around every wall in the game" -kind of collectibles, though most of them are really well designed with the game's mechanics in mind.

I don't think I'll be angering many people when I say that this is one of - if not THE - best fighting games ever made and probably the best Smash game ever made, too. I am a bit biased towards the series (after all it's one of my favorites) but I think it's pretty objectively true that this game is worth the price tag - and maybe even the DLC if you're really into it like I am! - if you're purely thinking about how much time you'll be putting into it. At the time of writing this review, I'm nearing about 500 hours of playtime on my Switch, and it has barely become boring. It's one of the most enjoyable couch versus games, and it even has a few co-op modes and a great Spirits mode to keep you entertained during long trips! With the recently added Stage Builder and Shared Content modes, you can even create your own stages and download them and much more that other people made through the Internet! This game really does nearly everything. There isn't really a reason not to buy the game, except if you really, really don't like platformer fighting games. The other reason that you wouldn't have it is that you don't have a Switch, and if you don't have a Switch, what are you even doing, sitting on your computer and reading this review? Go to your local gaming shop and buy a Smash + Switch bundle right now!

SteamWorld Dig 2

Wow. Just... wow. Where can I even begin with this game? It looks beautiful, especially comparing it to its predecessor, and it controls smoother than a block of butter. The Metroidvania and Minecraft-like elements are great, with a lot of unique things that just make the overall game so great. The music is phenomenally atmospheric, and while the environmental cave music isn't the most memorable, most of the soundtrack above ground is just as good as the games it takes its inspiration from, and all of it fits the theme! My only real complaint/request for the next game in the series is to make it longer. This is truly a quality over quantity -game, and in a perfect world where SteamWorld Dig 3 already exists, the only thing really holding it back from it being a literally perfect game is it's short length. Sure, it has a challenge temple, but for newer players it's too frustrating and older players it doesn't make the game's runtime that much longer. Still, I do recommend the game for anyone who's ever enjoyed games like Metroid, Castlevania, Minecraft and Terraria, it's really that good. (Maybe Image & Form should name this beautiful genre they've 'crafted' "Metroidcraftia"..!)
