Transformers: War for Cybertron10
Jun 29, 2022
An absolutely brilliant game, and one of the first major "movement shooters" in my opinion. The campaign levels are very linear but well designed, and each of the playable characters feel different. The story is pretty good, and was continued greatly in the sequel, Fall of Cybertron. In its prime, the Multiplayer and Escalation modes were unmatched. The multiplayer had such fluidity and movement in its combat, and wasn't replicated by any other shooter at the time. The escalation mode was somewhat similar to COD zombies, but had more depth due to the enemies actually shooting back at you. I say "was," because the servers have been down since 2020. They have been mostly revived due to community effort on PC and PS3, but due to some internal systems they will likely never be revived on Xbox 360. Even still, this game was and still is incredible.

Pretty fun, though don't expect anything revolutionary. It has a very simple plot with simple gameplay, and that's all I wanted from it. It has some fun references to War for Cybertron, and some design differences that were fun to point out. Graphics were sub-par but it's decent for a wii game. Overall some dumb, simple fun that is especially interesting for a transformers fan.

Oh boy, this game was and still is a disappointment. Where to start? The story makes no attempts to make any amount of sense, and it would take a whole essay to list the amount and severity of plotholes. So many of the game's assets were directly recycled from Fall of Cybertron. Enemies? Yup. Guns? All of them, down to item descriptions and damage numbers. Entire map sections were reused, many voicelines were reused to annoying amounts, and it feels more like an asset flip than a fully-fledged game. And with this in mind, you'd think it would keep the same fun gameplay from Fall of Cybertron, right? Nope. You can't accelerate while transforming which makes the whole mechanic feel awful, they added lootboxes for some god forsaken reason, and in order to upgrade weapons you must open those lootboxes for minutes on end. Although despite all of this, Fall of Cybertron's brilliant gameplay does shine through a bit and is the only thing keeping this game from being completely horrible. Aswell as that, reflections and entire textures were messed up which leaves the game looking much worse than Fall of Cybertron. Levels also feel very uninspired and are mostly gray. I was hoping that the escalation mode would be the saving grace, but it wasn't. It made the same mistakes as Fall of Cybertron, and cranked them up ten fold. There were a few fun mechanics in escalation, such as permanent upgrades and being able to choose from over half a dozen (though most of them reused) maps, but the bad definitely outweighed the good. Doors and weapon pickups were completely removed, replaced instead with traps and a permanent progress weapon locker. This removed almost all tactics from escalation, and made it feel more like a grind. You're probably wondering why I'm stating this all in past tense, and that's because the servers have since been shut down. The little bit of remaining value given to the game from escalation has since been taken due to a server shutdown in 2020. All you're left with is a buggy, awkward, horrible campaign that makes less sense than a Michael Bay film. Shame on you, Edge of Reality. Shame on you.

Before I start this, let me say that I absolutely love this game. The campaign is jaw-dropping, and the multiplayer was incredible. These are just my minor gripes I want to express, as it was supposed to be better than War for Cybertron in every way. Though the servers have been shutdown since 2020, so you'll only be able to play campaign if you buy it, sadly. Campaign levels feel a lot more scripted compared to WFC, and combat situations feel fewer overall. Aswell as that, the game can get ridiculously easy on subsequent playthroughs with the addition of a shop allowing you to buy weapon upgrades that range from useless to overpowered. It feels weird to browse through a Cybertronian Amazon during a war. Although on first playthrough the campaign feels amazing, it isn't nearly as replayable as War for Cybertron. Escalation was also a massive letdown. It's limited to 15 waves, unlike War for Cybertron's unlimited waves. To me, this defeats the whole purpose of escalation, that being to survive as long as possible. You can also only choose from four pre-set characters rather than any character on the faction, and each character only has one ability. An overall downgrade. Multiplayer was a step-up in regards to maps, gameplay, and especially customization. Maps were bigger and more colorful than WFC, there were hundreds of potential cosmetic combinations, and guns all felt fairly balanced and weighty. There definitely were some missed opportunities, but overall a great experience. My review on escalation and multiplayer don't matter now as the servers have shutdown and all attempted server revivals have failed. Overall, I believe it's worth it to experience the campaign, but don't expect to be able to replay it as much as WFC or play escalation or multiplayer at all.
