Divinity: Original Sin

Divinity: Original Sin is a good RPG. There. That is all you need to know. People giving it a low score don't understand the game, so ignore them. People that give the game a 10 are exaggerating, and you should not ignore them, but take them with a large grain of salt. Personally, I love the game, but hate the turn-based combat. I liked, and played to death, games like the Black Isle games (Baldur's Gate series, Planescape: Torment and my favorites, Fallout I and II). But let's face it people, gaming has moved on. Real time came, and I loved it even more. The first Divinity game, Divine Divinity, I LOVED it. It was one of the most fun RPG's I ever played. Larian is a fantastic studio, that can make great RPG's that however often slightly miss the mark. Slightly, just below the bulls eye. Original Sin looks great, but it is just trying to hard to be "old school" to be more fun than a game like Divine Divinity. Movement is sluggish and slow, as is the combat. Yes, I know it's "about tactics" (not really), and it's not "dumbed down" (it is kind off...), and "you have to be smart to win" (not really, you just need to understand the game mechanics), but I don't really like it. The game just doesn't feel as fun as many other RPG's I've played, especially the combat is kind of disappointing. Everything else is just swell, but I can't nearly justify a 10 because for me a game hits the spot in all marks except the combat. Pro's: - Looks and feels great. - Tons of stuff to explore, steal, sell, abuse, etc. - Humour, most of it actually funny! - Emersive - Nice amount of, if somewhat boring, loot. Cons: - The game is slowwwwwww... Movement, and combat. An easy way to make a game last longer of course, but still... - Turn-based combat. But I guess that is personal. - Story isn't great. I would have given this game a 9/10, if the combat wasn't turn-based (you know, for that "old skool" feel the oldies always complain about). Now it's a very solid 7,5/10.

Wow... Just wow... And not in a good way. Let me just say this: the game is a very bad port from console (Xbox) to PC. Especially the controls and thus the gameplay have suffered, and since that is the bread and butter of any game it just breaks Dark Souls II. It's clunky, it's non-responsive, it's broken. That really should be all you need to know not to buy the game at this point.

Might & Magic X: Legacy

M&MX is the perfect game for people who are getting old and want to feel younger again. You know, those people in their 30/40s that **** about everything being better in the old days, mainly because they hate themselves for what they have become... Personally, I'm on the fence about this one. I came into PC gaming with Might & Magic IV: The Mandate of Heaven, which was basically a new starting point for the Might & Magic series. It was a fantastic game, with a huge open world, tons of loot, and huge amounts of enemies. Eventually the series would crash hard with Might & Magic IX, which was basically a bug-infested travesty. A shame, and when the news came out that Might & Magic would return for a tenth instalment, I was very, VERY happy. I mean, with all the technical possibilities we have today, and the series it was based upon, it HAD to be a great game right? **** really. Sadly M&MX isn't based on the fantastic sixth/seventh/eight instalments of the series, but rather on the ancient first five. Great games in itself, but gaming has moved on, and not for nothing. Of course, it is "hip" to go "old school", yet now we have a game that only sad, stuck in their ways men (no woman will play this, EVER) will love. The rest might like it, but most will give it a pass. My main beef with this game is that they went back to turn-based grit movement/combat. This makes the entire game feel very sluggish and slow, less open world, and, especially, very old. I used to love it when I could just run around a map full of enemies, pelting away arrows and spells at a huge group of enemies. It was one of the best parts of the newer older games (VI to IX). In M&M X, you have to move grit by grit and wait until the enemy is within range for some slow turn-based combat. Don't get me wrong, the combat works, but it's not much fun when you have to do it against every single enemy. But I guess it's one way to make a 20 hour game last over 50... Graphics are a bit dodgy for 2014, but the M&M series was never a graphic marvel so it's easily overlooked. They work, let's just keep it at that. Sound is solid, with some epic music that hits the spot. Gameplay is OK, if you don't mind very slow turn-based fights. You need to use your smarts, especially in the beginning of the game, and that might put some people right off. The lack of "modern" implementations like fast travel or town portals is another thing that will make a lot of people leave this game alone. You have to walk, in turned based fashion no less, over the entire map to cities, if you need to buy a rations/potions/level skills. It's a chore, one that should have been lightened by including a town portal spell (even if it was on a CD). Still, the game is fun in it's own way. You get a real feeling of accomplishment when your piss-poor party slowly turns into a lean mean slaughtering machine when you level them the right way and pimp them out with the right kind of equipment. There is loot is a-plenty, and even though it is never spectacular (even artifacts, sort of unique items, won't blow your mind) it is a joy to sell off big amounts of stuff you don't need to buy equipment you do, or to find stuff you can actually use (take that Diablo 3...). Also there is plenty to discover, in a big more or less open world. It's RPG heaven really. This game would have gotten a solid 9 from me, if they wouldn't have walked the trendy "old school" line. It's aged and therefore bothersome gameplay (turn-based movement in a grit, no quick ways to travel), sadly takes a lot of fun out of the game. It might be great for old farts who like to complain on the internet about "how great games used to be", but for more modern or casual gamers, it can be off putting. And that's a shame. Oh well, better next time! 7/10

Being disappointed in the "prequel" to 3089 (not surprisingly named 3079...), I jumped at this game which was supposed to be an improved version to said prequel. I can only say I was even more disappointed in this "improved" game. Turns out improved doesn't mean better... Gameplay is almost the same as in 3079, except that you walk a whole lot more. The levels are empty, and character movement is sluggish and slow. For an open world FPS game, that a big no-no. Shooting enemies is a chore, since your gun misses most of the time. Doesn't matter how you aim, it's all calculated by a stat. "Fun"... Graphics are awful, they actually gave me a headache! The game looks like a **** cousin of the SNES game Starfox. I actually prefered the Minecraft look of the prequel, 3079. Terrible... The sounds are there, but nothing special. The music is totally out of place, thank god you can set the volume to 0. All in all this game is BAD! It has, like it's prequel, great ideas like randomly generated open world and drops with random stats, but the execution is just horrible. For Chr-st sake Prh00t, invest in an existing engine, and use that! This way your games might actually be somewhat enjoyable to play! The "prequel" got a 4/10 from me. This "sequel" is worse, so a 3/10 is in order. 3 point for originality and ideas, but 0 for execution. Hope 3099 will be better instead of worse.

Let's be realistic here people: 3079 is a FPS that uses the Minecraft "engine". Now I understand one must like Minecraft and everything it stands for, but in the end 3079 is a game that tries to be something it isn't. The idea of the game is great: An FPS in a randomly designed open world with random enemies who drop guns/swords with random stats that is supposed to challenge you constantly. A bit like what we want Fallout 4 to be... Sounds great right? Too bad the game has this very cheap feel to it, and gets boring really, REALLY fast. About 3 hours in I started thinking "what's the point", because you are literally just doing the same thing over and over: walking a lot, levitating a bit, shooting a lot, grabbing the same weapons over and over with slightly different stats and finding a vendor to sell them too so you can buy the same items with slightly better stats over and over. That's really all there is to the game, so if you really have no life and are very, very bored, you might play this for months to come. For the rest of us, it's a fun few hours at most. One can of course not compare a game like this to "true" FPS games like COD, Battlefield, Killzone, Fallout 3 (NV), Arma, etc, but still... Those games take at least some skill when it comes to the shooting part, meaning you have to really aim at what you want to hit. Not in 3079 though, since weapons have an accuracy stat that makes you fire all over the place. Here, you just point in the direction of an enemy (a set of blocks...) and just hail Mary the damn thing. Luckily, enemies are very dumb, and will attack anything that attacks them, or comes close enough, moving in a straight line. While the game sounds like a loot-fest, it's only partially so. Items are always the same (5 types of gun, radar, battery, medpack, etc.), and just have a few different stats (but nothing major, so you never go "WOW"), and gradually go up in level. All in all you just collect and sell, which is not as much fun in this game. Another beef I have is with the graphics. True, graphics don't make a game, but a FPS is the one type of game where graphics matter. If I'm going to snipe somebody, I want to hit him in the head, not in the block that sits upon another block. While graphics works for the world, they don't work for the enemies. It just seems silly shooting at these cartoon characters. Sound... There is sound, lets keep it at that. The music however is horrible, and doesn't fit this type of game at all. Go mute, you'll have more fun. It's a game that is worth the 5 or 6 bucks you spend on it. But that's all. Don't expect anything really good or special. Unless you are one of "those" guys, who hate big studio's and games and pretend to love everything indie. Personally, I enjoyed the game in the beginning, but it goes from hard, to easy, to pointless too fast. I give it a 6 for the first 3 hours, and after that it just slides into a 3. 4/10

Strange how a brand new 45 euro game can look like a DLC... Saints Row IV is basically Saints Row III with a strange story, superpowers, and aliens thrown in. Same city, a lot of the same weapons, same gangs and NPC's. Still, part III was extremely fun, and having superpowers is fun (even if it's a rip-off from Prototype, a lot of the game seems "borrowed from other games...) so it's worth a go, just not for 45 euros...

All you need to know: I was a big fan of the SNES Shadowrun game. I had nothing with the table top game, or with Cyberpunk, but I just love everything about it. Now, about 20 years later, I got the same vibe when I was playing Shadowrun Returns. 'nuff said. Still, the game itself isn't perfect, and has some small flaws that may or may not be fixed in time. How about a pro/con list? Pro: Graphics. While relatively simple, they fit this game perfectly. Combat. I'm not a big fan of turn-based combat, but SR makes it work. No hack 'n' slash action here, you need to use a bit of strategy to win some battles. Atmosphere. The game feels just like the SNES version, which was awesome. You are playing in the world of Shadowrun, not just pretending to do so. NPCs have soul and character, unlike in most games. Cons: Linear. The game is EXTREMELY linear, something that just feels a bit outdated in 2013. You are forced to go from one location to the other, with no choice to roam free whatsoever. A shame. This game could have been so great if it was at least somewhat open world. Combat. While combat is fun, it can get boring fast. But that's generally so with turned based combat IMO. Playtime. The game is short. Before you know it, the game is over. Now I know that this game is just a basic package, and people are encouraged to make their own scenario's, but still. I would have loved it if the main campaign had some extra meat on its bones. Save system. The game works with an auto save system, yet it never tells you when it saves. If you suddenly need to quit, chances are you'll lose a lot of progress. Why? Don't know. It's not like a decent save system would wreck the game play. All in all a solid, yet relatively simple and short, game. One that players of the original SNES Shadowrun will especially enjoy. Can't wait until more campaigns are added!

There seems to be a large gap between people who hate this game (the majority), and people who like it mostly due to the "old school" feel of the game. The latter often say that since this is an indie game, we can't expect all the bells and whistles of an AAA title. That's true, but neither should be expect a bug-infested game that clearly hasn't been tested. My 2 cents: Graphics: For a 2013 game, even an indie one, the graphics are sub-par. Animations are choppy, there often is a lag (walk around, suddenly a building pops up next to you), and all the NPC's/monsters look like they came out of 2002. The main peeve I have with the graphics is that the devs didn't do any optimization. My GPU can handle the latest games with most options enabled without breaking a sweat, but this game seems to push it to it's limits and the thing gets almost ready for take-off! The devs apparently build their own engine, and it shows. Sound: The music is standard for any RPG, and the SFX is OK. Nothing ****, but not bad either. However, the voice-overs are terrible. Since this is where the lion share of the Kickstarter money is supposedly spend on, I wonder if the devs aren't cruising on their brand new dirt bikes right now... General Game play: Movement and UI are choppy, non-intuitive and slow. The camera is just off: instead of a nice birds eye view, it's like you are trapped in a closet, looking at your feet. It makes exploration claustrophobic and negates the open world of the game. Your character movement is wonky, he seems to be drunk all the time, and handling the camera around you can be something of a challenge. This game just feels very SLOW, and would be more suited as a turned-based game. Everything from looting a chest to walking around feels like a choir. Maybe the devs did this to make the game last longer, or to give it an "old school" feel, but in the end it's just lazy/bad programming. Combat: Combat is slow and a bit dodgy. It's almost identical to a game like Neverwinter Nights, where you click, miss or hit depending on the rolls the games makes for you, and the enemy does the same. It's real time, but feels a lot like it's turn based. Strange. Fighting enemies feels like a choir, since you spend most time missing the enemy and the enemy missing you. This wouldn't be that bad, but the game is crawling with the same generic enemies. It's just not fun, and certainly not "old school". It's like they wanted to make a cross a game like Diablo with a game like Baldur's Gate, but failed. Loot: A major component in any RPG. This is where this game gives some amount of satisfaction. There are A LOT of containers you can loot, and they contain a hefty amount of stuff ranging from ingredients like plants or gems to weapons and armour. Some containers are locked though, and you need to find runes to complete a mini-game for each lock. Interesting idea, but in the end it fails because you need to play far into the game to find enough runes to unlock any chests, plus opening the locks becomes very tedious. I mean, EVERY chest that is locked needs to be opened by the mini-game, yet none of them contain anything really special. Loot is just very random and sadly mediocre. Plus stacking stuff seems to be bugged. Sometimes I can stack an items, yet the next time I play the game I can't. Luckily you have quite the inventory from the start, but that fills up. Crafting: A part of RPGs I can either love or not care about. In this game, with it's simple weapons and armour, crafting can be a real asset. So I invested my skill points heavily into skills like metalworking (making bars from ore), armourworking and weaponworking to make some nice items for my level 5 character. However, the metalworking skill DOESN'T WORK, so the other two skills I mentioned become mostly useless also, since many of the recipes need the metal bars you craft. A realy bummer, and basically that ruined this game for me. Sloppy development, very, very sloppy. Magic: I'm never heavy on magic, I mostly play melee combined with some simple spells. In this game, you find special runes that you can turn into a magic spell. Fun fact: you can combine most runes and this make original spells! Seems like fun, if you like using magic. I made a healing spell, but the casting is very slow and the effect laughable. But like I said, I'm not about the magic. Fiddling around with ruins might be a lot of fun for people who are. Story: The story is of the game is vast! If you like reading tons of text and are into lore, this game delivers. Most of it is quite boring and irrelevant to the game though, it's like the devs had tons of material for which they just needed a game for. So they build a game around their stories, and it seems like they where in quite a hurry. All in all I wouldn't call this game just "bad", it's just totally unfinished. It was clearly rushed, and it's a slap in the face of the people who backed it. 3/10
