Elden Ring10
Mar 22, 2024
Is Elden Ring perfect? No, but what game is. Why Elden Ring is a 10 is because of it's breadth, beauty, mystery and combat mechanics. It has no peer - other games can match two or maybe three of these things, but none match all four. After completing Elden, do yourself a favour and complete the Fromsoft tour of games that are all built on the same principles. My suggested order is Dark Souls 1 (Remastered), Bloodborne, Demon Souls (remake), Dark Souls 3 and Sekiro. If that isn't enough Dark Souls then pick up Dark Souls 2, just be warned that this is the only title that has no remake or remaster and infamously had to dial down it's ambitions leaving some parts of the game feeling a little rough, including hit boxes. But there are some fans that will die on a hill defending the title and I would gladly take DS2 over 95% of the games that are out there. Enjoy.

My first 10/10 on this website. Superlatives do not do this game justice - imagine peeling an onion and inside the onion is a pretzel made of diamond that on closer examination is in fact a rubik's cube. And that there is no narrator or voiceover explaining everything, all you have to go by are brief interactions with NPCs that understand parts of the story. Couple that with thrilling combat, pulse pounding suspense and some of the most atmospheric level design you have ever seen and you have what i describe as the perfect game. It is of course not literally perfect - there is some quality of life stuff here that is lacking - but as far as the game world is concerned, Fromsoft have outdone themselves. If you're reading this in 2022 or after, do not hesitate. Bloodborne is ageless.

With the wisdom of hindsight, a true classic. A new gaming paradigm, a punishing difficulty level with challenges that are often easily circumvented when you know how, and some of the best level design in one of the most immersive environments in gaming history. New gamers - ignore the cliches. Getting stuck usually just means you need to grind near a bonfire for a while. It's that simple.

God of War9

You know that feeling you get watching a good thriller where you know there's no way in heck you are doing anything other than seeing what happens next? After the one hour mark that's God of War, except swap out murder mystery and replace it with stunning vistas, jaw dropping monsters and highly engaging NPC's, a first for the series. And if you think you could care less about a dad's relationship with his son, guess again. The only disclaimer is that there is lots of combat and hidden chests, so that does rule out some players. For anyone else it is worth every cent of your money.

The Last of Us Part II10

I am giving this a 10 to help offset the backlash. This game is extraordinary, we've not seen anything like it before. There are honestly times when you are hiding behind a couch waiting to smack someone in the head that you feel like you are trapped in your own brutal movie, with only one way forward. Ellie's desperation becomes your own. LoU 2 isn't perfect, and once again a fan community is divided over the story decisions, but please ignore the noise and check it out. This game is visceral, we are going to be talking about it for years.
