Metroid: Other M3
Apr 19, 2012
I own all the previous games, and this game is a awful piece of trash compared to any and all of them. The writing is so bad an autistic child could do better, and the woman playing samus delivers her lines like its the most boring thing in the world, and she couldn't care less. The plot is as weak as humanly possible, samus has all her powers from the very beginning but wont use any of them until this guy who isn't her boss any more says she can. its to the point where samus is dieing of exposure to lava, but would rather that than activate the varia suit or even request to use it. Seriously WTF. The game randomly turns into the most hated of all genres, the pixel hunt. Randomly throughout the game the action stops, the view is locked into first person, and the game cannot continue until you randomly click the world around and guess the exact one thing the designer was thinking of. Finally, the gameplay is just awful. Almost all the shooting is done via auto-aim, the main weapon is almost useless except when used for finishers and charged shots.

Kid Icarus: Uprising10

Truly epic game. People complaining about the controls clearly have never played a FPS with a trackball before, because the controls are almost exactly like that. Really it takes only a short time to get used to, and you get far more control than a comparable title for example Metroid Hunters. The number of levels, number of difficulty levels, number of weapons and fusion combinations, number of power-ups, funny dialogue and huge number of secrets to find and unlock make this game far more than value for money.

Kid Icarus6

Overall fairly fun, but very hard and very short. for example the monsters that steal your extremely important power ups cannot be killed, requiring you to suicide and start the level over, or pay many hearts (generally more than you'll have) to get them back. The castle maps are nearly useless, assuming you bother to activate them. power ups are neither self explanatory, nor easy to activate, requiring you to reach full health before they activate. I found the easiest way was to reach the end of the area, then suicide on the next one to come back with full health. each and every death requires you to restart the area. The first ascent (out of the underworld) is quite definitively the hardest part of the game. despite all this when you get good and get it right, its very satisfying to do well at it. And then it ends. My stats log lists the game as played for 5 hours when I completed it, but I completed half the game before restarting (I lost all power ups to the thieves and it auto-saved when I reached the next area), and left my 3DS on standby for at least an hour (I don't know if that is included). I could have been much faster if I wasn't so meticulous about power up collection. The price is like all eShop titles, more than it's worth. £5.40 for a re-release of an old game, that as far as I can tell has taken little or no effort on their part (except to label which sprites belong to which layer). if the price ever comes down to £2 or £2.50, then this would be an 8.5 or 9 out of 10, but it is too short and insubstantial to warrant the same price as so many full 3D games on steam. Finally, the title "3D Classics" is a bit misleading. While technically using the 3D feature to separate the sprite layers of the game, it makes almost no difference and is barely noticeable.

LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game7
Aug 2, 2011
Having loved many of the previous Lego interpretations of classic films, and also loving the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, I expected to adore this game. Perhaps I set my expectations a little too high, because what I got was a good, but not great platformer. The graphics are as pretty as ever, and all the characters look right, but the problem comes from the fact that barely any of the environments are made of Lego themselves, or if they are they donâ

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D10
Aug 2, 2011
As the original Ocarina of Time was my favorite game ever, this title had the advantage of triggering rose tinted memory's of the original, but the severe disadvantage of having to live up to them. This it did with flying colours. While you wouldn't notice at first glance, every texture and object model has been upgraded, so the general effect is to make the game look as good as you remember it (rather than as blocky as it actually was). Some of the sounds seem to have been re-recorded, but so faithfully to the original so that you might never notice. The music is as beautiful and epic as ever, though you will need headphones to truly appreciate the upgrade. And finally we come to the gameplay. It is still techically the same game you played before so you might imagine it would play just the same. in fact a host of miner gameplay tweaks such as the ability to turn the console for fine aiming, and the touchscreen buttons that can have gear mapped to them, make the whole game run smoother and better than ever. This is not a re-release, but a total upgrade. The 3D if anything is just icing on the already brilliant cake, and means using the analoge stick and rotation controls the bow and slingshot are actually more useful, very easy to use tools.

Ridge Racer 3D6
Aug 2, 2011
To call Ridge Racer 3D a racing game is a bit misleading, it would be far better labeled as a 'car chase' game. At the start of each race the player's car starts on the start line, with the opponants spread across the first quarter of the track. The task at hand over the next three laps is to catch up with and overtake the other seven racers. while quite fun, its not what i expected, and not the only problem the game suffers with. The game suffers from a lot of rubber banding, meaning when the game allows the AI to bend or break the rules (top speed, number of nitro boosts, cornering lines etc) in order to increase the 'challenge'. I first encountered this with the f-zero series, but at least in f-zero you start level pegging on a grid. Finally, the steering and drifting system is ludicrus. As any good driver knows, the best way to regain control from a skid is to ease off the gas, but here letting up the power for even a moment is how you start to drift. worse than that, dispite a skid turning you beyond 90º from your direction of travel, regaining control is not only easy, but practically inevitable. The driving physics of this game really need a lot of work, which is a terrible shame for a driving game. graphics on the other hand, are very pretty, the music is nice, and the sound effects fitting. However the commentator lady spouts useless drivel constantly, and there is no option to turn her off (not while keeping the rest of the sound anyway). The 3D is definatly the best feature, in that it makes it easy to judge distance and turns. Overall its not a bad game, but it does feel like an upgraded tech demo.
