Metal Slug Anthology

User Score64VII

Fans of Metal Slug should be happy with this collection of different Metal Slug titles. PSPwise the controls are smooth and you'll get your typical Metal Slug action. People who don't know Metal Slug might dig the lovely pixel artwork/animations and that it's basically a jump 'n' run game, just with a selection of heavy weapons which are weaker or stronger, yet all of them fun. Overall the game with its soundtrack aged well. Beginner or pro, the difficulty options make sure you'll get your challenge.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories

Compared to "Liberty City Stories" this GTA title feels like a full packed GTA, in the style of "GTA San Andreas". For a portable game, the world has a great design and exploring it is really entertaining, because you can use machines like cars, trucks, motorbikes, bmx, helicopters, jetskis, motorboats, golf carts etc. and in GTA VCS you have the ability to swim. All of this is very important to get that in-game feeling of total freedom, which makes GTA titles great (besides Rockstar's dark humor and missions). I think GTA VCS' physics are better than in GTA LCS, which is also very important, since you'll drive a lot (often fast and crazy). The story is way more interesting than in LCS and the ending was satisfying. The radio stations offer a well picked selection of 80s songs. Overall you always got something to do, without being annoyed by it.

Innocent Life: A Futuristic Harvest Moon
8
User Score64VII

If you're one of those people, who played "Harvest Moon" on the SNES, you might not like the fact that the main character is a robot, which isn't too obvious, but it might destroy the charm of the (human) boy, who tries to maintain a farm and is all about nature. Beside the MC being a robot, there are many high-tech farm tools, hence "A Futuristic Harvest Moon". If you can accept this kind of Harvest Moon, the game itself will be pretty much like Harvest Moon. But if you want something closer to the SNES, but with more options, check out "Harvest Moon Hero of Leaf Valley". Despite the storms that pop up in "Innocent Life" quite often and destroy a lot, it wasn't difficult to make a fortune within the first 2 seasons and having a decent stock of seeds and tools. Some things managed theirself and some tasks become easier or manage itself at a certain time as well. On the one hand that's less annoying work or less challenge. But if you use the whole farm for vegetables and flowers, you can't complain about not enough work. In case you got some time, you can even explore the island and collect much food in the wild. But most areas must be unlocked first. Interaction with the locals can be pretty much dull, because they often say the same thing and don't expect different music for each season. There is one main theme for your farm, for the town and about 2-3 for the different caves + songs for special events. Your main theme has a sorta melancholic touch to it, so that tune might become annyoing over the time. This simulation has many stats, including your own stats (personality and skills) that can be leveled up, which reminds me of an RPG.

Since you can't really beat this game, but rather improve your beats, I'll state my first impression and the impression after fully understanding the controls. First of all, I had doubts about the "legitness" of this music creating tool for the PSP. A lot of lame things get hyped these days, but this PSP title by "Rockstar" once again shows that "Rockstar" cares about decent products. My first impression was "normal". I have some knowledge about music software for PC, therefore seeing this and that tool was nothing that confused me, ergo reading the manual or watching the tutorial videos, which are decent, wasn't necessary. I'd recommend to read the manual and watch the tutorial videos if you are new to this though, else you might be frustrated and that will affect your opinion about this "game". Also patience is key and the reward is great! After checking all tools and options, my first impression was good. And after getting comfy to use the knobs of the PSP to make music, my impression was quite great. You can import your own sound, record your own sound (only if your PSP has a mic), create your own unique synth sounds, ergo you are not limited to the in-game library, alter samples/sounds, put together your own drum kit, you can add several tracks and create a huge song and the library has a good selection as well - basically enough to have some fun. If you want to become a music producer, you better save some money for some real studio hardware and software. After all this is a "game", but Rockstar and Timbaland really tried to give us something, that is rather serious and not toyish. Again, serious producers won't agree, but I'm saying this from a PSP player's perspective. With enough time on your hands or enough dedication, you can create some pretty nice tunes, which are good enough to represent on video streaming plattforms. If you don't have the money for a real studio, but want to relax while making some music or if you always wanted to something to create beats for your lyrics to work on your rapping, this might be a good alternative or start. If this game is your cup of tea, you'll definitely spend hours and days with this - theoretically this could be your all-time PSP game.

Two things you'll notice when you play "Echochrome" for the first time; the minimalist design and the great soundtrack. I'm pretty sure even if you never cared about classical music before, this might be for you. But "Echochrome" is not a music game, but a mind game, yet the music really creates the atmosphere with the black white design that runs very smooth and flawless. The puzzles start easy to get used to the controls and become step by step, more and more difficult. Although there is a certain time limit, the game itself is relaxing while being challenging. You don't have lives, you simply try again on the current level. This is truly a classy game, art and something new. If you are restless, all about graphics, action and unlocking achievements, this game is not for you - but I'd recommend it anyway, because you should try it. ;)

Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories
7
User Score64VII

If you played "GTA San Andreas" on PS2 and want a portable GTA that has the same game style, "GTA Vice City Stories" might be the better choice for you, since the free roaming is more satisfying with its design and the freedom is greater (i.e. boats, helicopter, territorial fights, making business etc.). Due to that lack "GTA Liberty City Stories" feels like a sorta stiff, straight line story. Of course you can go on rampage and you get your typical mini games, but the whole product lacks charm. Even the ending was quick and unsatisfying. If you know "The Sopranos", some parts might remind you of that show, since it's very obvious. I haven't seen "The Sopranos" back then, but in hindsight it does not affect the game. It's just a homage. Usually GTA's radio stations are great, but GTA LCS's rather annoyed me. Of course that's just my opinion, but gladly you can use your own music from your memory card, which improved the game.

Pangya Fantasy Golf

If you want a solid golf game, with some refreshing ideas that actually work with the game or if you liked "Everybody's Golf" and want more games like that, Pangya might be for you. That being said, "Pangya" goes several steps higher than "Everybody's Golf", so it's truly "Fantasy Golf". I can't speak for everyone, but don't be afraid of the cuteness and colors. Such things can be annoying, but somehow the whole concept is pretty relaxing and fun. And if you love to unlock and buy a lot of items, Pangya got you covered. This game is a "happy place" type game, motivational and without getting pampered.

WTF: Work Time Fun

User Score64VII

You think this is a frackin' game? Yes and no. Not everyone has made contact with low paid, bad jobs, but if you ever had contact, you can definitely relate to the content of "Work Time Fun". Starting with the title and ending with the whole content, this game is sarcastic without mercy. The mini games (jobs) are creative, yet dull, yet entertaining, yet torture - it's genius! Sometimes you see yourself smiling and then you realize how wrong it is. This game is a gem for your collection, but also a dirty rock. You have to play this piece of art to understand my statement.

Chili Con Carnage

User Score64VII

If you played "Total Overdose" on PS2, don't expect that "Chili Con Carnage" will be great too. Of course the PSP title does not offer a world like the PS2 title, although seeing GTA LCS and GTA VCS it should be possible. But that's not the problem with this game. The controls are not well done. Pulling all kind of crazy stunts and combos in "Total Overdose" was one reason that made it a great game. "Chili Con Carnage" on the other hand, with the PSP stick and the game's physics completely ruin the fun. That being said, the unreliable controls turn this game into a frustrating challenge - a challenge that is not based on skill, but rather luck. It's such a shame.
