While it does get a little bogged down under its many subplots — and the cliffhanger ending feels almost like it was tacked on from one of the showrunners’ previous shows — it’s still a fun series, quick to binge and easy to digest, culminating in a sweeping bittersweet finale that will leave viewers emotionally satisfied, and maybe even in tears.

As a whole, We Were Liars might be another example of TV with "eat the rich" commentary, but its expansion of the teen drama formula is what makes it thrilling from start to finish.

A 17-year-old girl (Emily Alyn Lind) wakes up on the beach with no memory of what happened. Since she summers on a private island with her rich family, she strives to piece together the mystery with continuous flashbacks and lots of dull VO. This is rather bland teen drama packaged in the currently popular privileged lifestyle environment. The annual household traditions add a bit of conservative New England propriety, but anyone looking for lush living will find this lacking. There is also a trio of adult sisters, who add another layer of uninteresting conflict. In addition to a moderately compelling story, the characters are essentially nondescript right out of a Ralph Lauren ad, even the gay one isn’t any fun. And in typical Hollywood style, theses “teens” are easily in their 20s. The effortless elegance and continual conflicts are never taken to any extremes, resulting in a rather bland summer getaway. Nearly everything comes together to deliver such a powerful, beautiful, and perfectly brutal gut punch that will not let you forget this show for weeks afterward. In short, while the execution could have been better, the story is quite interesting.

Don’t expect groundbreaking drama –We Were Liars is far from a teen Big Little Lies. But if you want to enjoy some rich mansion property porn, something pulpy to switch your brain off to, and a juicy little mystery, then We Were Liars may just be the perfect summer watch.

While there are good performances and some interesting characters in We Were Liars, we were pretty bored with the nondescript teenage characters at the show’s center, and wanted to scream every time we heard Candence’s narration.

A po-faced thriller about characters who are privileged and bland, soundtracked by the kind of acoustic dirges that used to blight John Lewis Christmas adverts.

This series tries, but its missteps are too large to ignore, and it'll probably end up as one of the year's TV flops.

The acting is terrible, the story is weak. At first I would have said this felt like it was written by a white version of Tyler Perry. Except Tyler gives you drama. This was so tepid. So inconsequential. Unlikable characters. I rooted for no one.
