Based upon the legendary manga by Kazuo Koike, the series was probably thrilling in its time, but is more of a curiosity by today's standards. Each episode combines historical drama and swordplay in equal doses.

This is for the Sword of Vengeance, first movie from 1972. Cinematography is very good for the time, performances are strong and understated. The flashbacks are very reminiscent of Reservoir Dogs, the camera work too, lots of close ups and slow dialog. Lighting too. This is the closest relative to Reservoir Dogs I know from a technical perspective. The story is similar in many ways to Ninja Scroll.
