Baccano goes over the top and succeeds. It is an extravaganza of slapstick, silliness, the supernatural, horror, violence -- everything to be expected from Japan but taken to a surprising degree (and it works). With so many characters and so much happening, the story can be overwhelming but it is, nonetheless, a great ride.

A rather odd show that has a very all over the place narrative that keeps jumping backwards and forwards. This is extremely confusing for the first few episodes. However, as the show progresses, it makes more and more sense and you can see why it was done that way. But, while it does serve it's purpose, it also feels needless as the constant switching back and forth needs constant recapping of scenes that were already show. Imagine your favorite song being song line by line backwards, but every time they add a new line they repeat all the lines they sang before, just to keep everything in context. This is how the anime feels, deep but also needlessly repetitive. Repetition aside the character are all very good and well developed. Isaac & Miria in particular are so over the top that you can not help but fall in love with them. I adore them and they make the show worth watching, just to see what they'll do next. Overall: Baccano! is a good show that could have used some better editing, and cutting down on needless repetition. It would be fun to see a version that plays all the scenes in chronological order.
