Boston Globe
Hartley's spare dialogue cuts right to the characters' psyches; his terse, laconic style accentuates the everyday horror. [20 Sept 1991]

The New York Times
Though Mr. Hartley's films are richly detailed, there are no frills or grace notes. Such work risks being too blunt, but Trust comes through.

Portland Oregonian
The faithful will appreciate [Hartley's] sharp, thoughtful dialogue, his sly humor and his utterly unpredictable plots. [06 Sep 1991]

Washington Post
Trust is always interesting. And always interesting, as someone once said, is always good.

Austin Chronicle
There's a serious teen angst movie somewhere in all this as well as an unflinching look at suburbia.

USA Today
Drollness on screen can sometimes be had cheaply, but a perfect cast is tougher to bankroll. Hal Hartley's new comedy has both - enough to defuse the smugness that seems to linger in its soul. [15 Aug 1991]

San Francisco Chronicle
Trust never lives up to its snappy opening. Everything is tongue-in-cheek here - yet it's never remotely clear what the point is or what's getting satirized. [16 Aug 1991]

Hal Hartley is an astonishing director. His timing and minimalism is extraordinary. I have all his films and I love them all. There's no point my describing them here because you could just look him up and you'll see his work but it's all worth watching. I really love this film especially with Adrienne Shelly who was sadly murdered either after this film or a few years after. It is a massive loss to acting and womanhood. So you will only really see her in Hal's films. She's not in many others. She fits his films like a glove. Hal use the same actors many times because they just fit. Of course, they must have loved it as well. Some achieve more mainstream greatness but I still don't think I've ever seen them better than in his films. So do yourself a favour and watch this movie. The timing is so amazing. I don't know how to describe it. Sometimes, well, often with good directors, it's hard to fit them in a genre. To say it's comedy is easy but it's the how that makes all the difference. That's why I have to sometimes have fold loose of my movies by director because there's no other way to put them in something else for them to be possibly missed. They have a flavour of directing. The best films are like music. This is one of them. Hal Hartley is so underrated. His films are really extraordinary. There's just this wonderful beauty about the minimalism, the story. Hal Hartley has such a unique way of presenting his ideas. And the actors love it because they're in all his movies. It's a shame he did not get more exposure. But all of the range of films that he makes are really truly wonderful to watch. I'm going to be riding this saying review on all the movies because watching them is not just about one film. Because they all tell a story of his style. That's why I have a list of films, a folder of films based on directors because they are the real storytellers and have a style that is so amazing to present an idea. So watch all of his movies and enjoy the uniqueness. There will be some reviews that may be specific but just watch any of all films and have fun with them. They are really unique and beautiful.
