The Threesome

Perhaps the biggest achievement of The Threesome is how it manages to remain real, grounded and tender but still succeeds in finding opportune moments of comedy in an undoubtedly absurd situation.

With its strong cast, crisp writing and exploration of the messiness of rash decisions, The Threesome embodies the essence of the romantic comedy while never falling into stereotypes or cliché. It’s fun, thoughtful, and heck of a ride.

The film effortlessly melds its sadcom properties with more predictable rom-com traditions.

The results are mixed in ways the filmmakers probably didn’t intend, but they’re at once genuinely intriguing and enormously charming given the talent involved.

The Threesome is not without its flaws, it could absolutely use some fleshing out in some key parts, and its ending feels like a bit of a cop-out, considering everything that comes before it — yet it delivers when targeting the big emotional core that makes this story special.

So many romantic comedies revel in formula, turning a genre into an embarrassing mating ritual soundtracked by the rustle of screenplay pages and bad scene-transition pop. If nothing else, The Threesome understands a greater range of emotional, physical, and logistical possibilities – so acutely, in fact, that it sometimes wanders away from the “com” part of the rom-com altogether.

The Threesome ends up kind of a mixed bag, cute but a bit disjointed.
