Brosnan reprend du service... au service de sa majesté... mais pas comme super agent indestructible, non, non, plutôt comme barbouze de base chargé d'aller prendre des nouvelles du canal de Panama. Pour ce faire, il prend contact auprès d'un tailleur anglais émigré joué par le sémillant Rush très convaincant ici. Il se trouve alors que la collecte d'informations va prendre un tour pour le moins inattendu ! Adapté d'un bouquin de Le Carré, on aurait pu craindre le film d'espions habituel, compliqué, tortueux et alambiqué mais il n'en est rien. Il s'agit en fait d'une petite comédie qui ne dit pas son nom, légère et qui se suit sans effort. En vérité, l'ensemble est assez invraisemblable mais reste divertissant, d'autant que Jamie Lee Curtis -dont le rôle n'est pas négligeable- est encore fort bien et n'hésite pas à le faire savoir, tous tétons plus ou moins dehors. A la frontière de l'incrédulité, le film n'est cependant ni un vrai film d'espionnage pur et dur, ni une comédie suffisamment sarcastique pour remporter l'adhesion sans sourciller. De la part de Boorman, on est donc un peu déçu même si on apprécie l'effort.
