The Croods

A spirited and eye-popping stealth charmer.

As family viewing, it's pleasant enough: primitive, yes, but in a digitally sophisticated way that's boisterous, funny and will no doubt sell a lot of toys.

While paying lip service to the spirit of invention and adventure, the movie doesn’t do much for the evolution of children’s animated entertainment.

The movie is at its most interesting and amusing when riffing on how cavemen might have reacted to new experiences and ideas, like fire and shoes. Whether the kiddies will appreciate that is unclear, but they’ll certainly like the voice work done by Emma Stone as Eep.

Though it's impressive in many technical and surface ways, The Croods lets us down on the essentials of character and story, and no amount of late-stage father/daughter bonding or vertiginous 3D cliffside tumbling can make up for that.

Aside from a few witty Looney Tunes–esque sight gags, such as one hilarious image of a woolly mammoth being swallowed up by the tectonically shifting earth, the stereoscopic visuals are a busy, personality-free digital blur.

I’d like to take back all those times I said Nicolas Cage was one of the most annoying actors on film. It turns out he’s equally terrible when he’s only on the soundtrack. And yet Cage is the least of the problems with The Croods.

Die Croods sind eine Steinzeitfamilie, bestehend aus sechs Mitgliedern. Der Anführer der Familie ist der vorsichtige Vater Grug, welcher mit seiner Familie in einer Hölle lebt, um in Sicherheit zu sein. Alle Familienmitglieder akzeptieren das, bis auf seine Tochter Eep, welche die Höhle auch Nachts verlassen möchte und die Welt sehen möchte. Eines Nachts trifft sie den Jungen Guy, welcher abenteuerlich ist und mehr Erfahrung von der Welt hat als die Groods. Als es zu einem Erdbeben kommt und die Höhle zerstört wird, muss die Familie sich eine neue Heimat suchen und müssen neue Herausforderungen lösen. Grug wird im Deutschen von Uwe Ochsenknecht synchronisiert und trotz anfänglicher Schwierigkeit kann man sich schnell daran gewöhnen. Die Stimme von Guy wiederum fand ich nicht gut besetzt. Die Animation der Charaktere sehen nicht gut aus und in der Zeit wo der Film rauskam, gab es schon bessere Animationen. Die Story ist nichts, besonderes und auch der Ablauf der Geschichte erfindet das Filmgenre nicht neu. Der Film hat einige Stellen mit Humor, die auch gut passen, aber im Vergleich zu anderen Filmen des Genres sind diese eher flach und auch zu wenig vorhanden. Guy als Charakter ist nicht so interessant und der Film konzentriert sich hauptsächlich auf ihn, Grug und Eep. Die Tiere und Landschaften sehen im Gegensatz zu den Charakteren gut aus und sehen heutigen Tieren ähnlich, mit einigen Unterschieden, da der Film zu einer anderen Zeit spielt. Die Groods ist ein eher schwacher Animationsfilm der für Kinder interessant sein kann, für mich aber zu viel von anderen Filmen auch kopiert hat. Sei es von Ice Age, Minions und andern Filmen. Im Vergleich zu anderen Animationsfilme wie Shrek, ist dieser Film für Erwachsene nicht unbedingt was. Die Croods wird auf jeden Fall kein Klassiker werden und ist einer der schwächsten Filme des Animationsgenres. 6,5/10

How to make a movie with tigers and caveman,But with Nicholas Cage noises!!

The plot was incredibly predictable, the comedy was bad and the pacing was way too fast during the first three quarters. The film was not creative, the extent of the creativity being animal other animal/plant. The characters to me were annoying and the majority were completely static, with the exception of Grugg and Eep. After the Tar pit scene, the plot becomes a lot less predictable, and the pacing is better, but I still couldn't care about them. The conflicts were born out of pure stupidity, and there were plenty of plotholes to go around. (Where are the trees? You can't simply survive on eggs you have to risk death to get. At least kill the bloody things.)

Ok, this is Dreamworks animation trying again too hard. The animation isn't my personal favorite. Beautiful colors but again I just didn't fall in love with characters or story :0/
