It’s half "Friday the 13th," half "Phantom of the Paradise," and just cheesy enough to work.

Despite Meat Loaf’s hammily entertaining turn as the desperate owner of a musical theater summer camp, the film fails to live up to its obvious inspirations.

As horror musicals go, Stage Fright is never more than an out-of-town tryout.

Stage Fright's lopsided tone wouldn't be so confounding if the horror elements worked or if writer-director Jerome Sable's music, co-composed with Eli Batalion, weren't so forgettable.

None of it works, really, as either musical satire or genre Chex mix.

I had just said recently that if you don't know how to handle the genres that you're including in your story, you run the risk of it becoming unbalanced and Stage Fright is another excellent example of this. Its biggest problems are that at times it feels very goofy, and at others it takes itself too seriously and the mix doesn't come out smoothly for the same reason. It's a mashup that doesn't land any of its punches, and the predictability weakens the rest of the effort and that's why the film falls apart so easily.

This was on Netflix, so I gave it a shot. It bored the hell out of me. The movie had a couple of bloody parts, but, for a slasher movie, not nearly enough of them. The twist was predictable, and the last twenty minutes were completely incomprehensible. Not recommended.
