Screamboat' is not a great movie by any stretch but if Ricky Jay was editing this footage in a scene from 'Boogie Nights,' he’d have to turn to Burt Reynolds and admit: 'It’s a real film.'

Sure, it’s cheap (though honestly, I found it better than a lot of other horror comedies), but it’s so in the spirit of a ‘Chucky’ movie that it ends up being just as good. It’s needlessly gory, which makes it funny — and that’s the point, because the film never takes itself seriously. The cast acts badly on purpose, the writer clearly had a blast, and the director seems to be having fun too. That is the spirit **** horror comedy.

Another movie taking advantage of the public domain. While it does at least try to look decent, it ultimately ends up being just as trashy as the rest.

Screamboat isn't a good movie, but it can be an entertaining experience if you only care about indulgently bloody kill sequences.

It could be funnier. It could be a lot smarter. It could look better. But it also could have been significantly worse, working as much as it does because it knows that you don’t need to be great if you’re this Goofy.

It doesn't quite rise to the level of "good" often enough for me to heartily recommend it. However, those who have a morbid fascination with this new crop of public domain horror could do much, much, much worse.

The problem is that these types of films feel lazy and could do so much more with their concepts, and while Screamboat tries to combat that with tame references, winks at the audience, and absurd violence, it can’t keep itself afloat.

This changed my life dude. The boat and the steam it made changed my life forever. I'll never forget that steamboat.
