SummaryOn the French Polynesian island of Tahiti, the High Commissioner of the Republic and French government official De Roller (Benoît Magimel) is a calculating man with flawless manners. His somewhat broad perception of his role brings him to navigate the high end "establishment" as well as shady venues where he mingles with the locals. Especially s... Read More

Pacifiction is not a vicarious experience of luxury; it is an experience of life. Set to its own tidal rhythm, it is one of the most beautiful and rigorously introspective movies of this or any year, a film that makes you deeply ponder the fate of humanity itself.

In scene after scene, Serra holds beauty and menace in a kind of uneasy equilibrium. He’s made a trouble-in-paradise movie where the trouble doesn’t overwhelm the paradise so much as poison it, at an almost imperceptible slow drip, from the inside.

Regardless of what people may say about Serra's arrogance and self-delusion, this film brilliantly captures a zeitgeist, in the way that TV series like The White Lotus or films like Triangle of Sadness only suggest. There is a sense of doom, a malaise so starkly real that the film simply doesn't need much more to captivate the viewer. It is a modern film in a way that few others have been in recent years. And it will prevail as a model for the ages. The film that captured the spirit of the 2020s.

'Pacifiction' is at times impenetrable, but at others, it's an experience as pleasant as it is hypnotic. Director Albert Serra delivers something akin to a political thriller that incorporates themes related to paranoia, colonialism, hedonism, and nihilism in a beautiful setting that makes you think about the world's end. What begins as a satire of the bourgeoisie becomes a somewhat suspenseful film that even seems to evoke David Lynch with images close to the surreal and the absurd. Slow cinema at its peak.

Pacifiction is by far Serra’s most serious and sombre film to date, an epic of neutered power and human expendability – a death-knell for humanity rendered as a tropical daydream.

Albert Serra’s bizarre epic is a cheese-dream of French imperial tristesse, political paranoia and an apocalyptic despair. It is a nightmare that moves as slowly and confidently as a somnambulist, and its pace, length, and Serra’s beautiful widescreen panoramic framings – in which conventional drama is almost camouflaged or lost – may divide opinion. I can only say I was captivated by the film and its stealthy evocation of pure evil.

Pacifiction is a film in many ways about floating, through life and water and power, inviting the viewer to idly drift right along with it.

Quite watchable, even sort of plot-driven — for a Serra film.

This isn’t a story, but an evocative collection of asked-and-answered prompts. You buy a ticket to Pacifiction and then you react, until the nudging stops.

it was calm and quiet. Two hours and forty-five minutes is a long time to tell a modern thriller drama, but in the end the film resorts to clichéd admiral dialogues and slogans to wrap up its drama. Nothing special happens either in the narrative or in the narrative structure or in the characterization and characters.
