The Travers Take
Keke Palmer and SZA show how star power can turn a girl buddy comedy into a world view of the Black experience with laughs that sting with harsh truth.

One of Them Days is funny as hell, but it also speaks to something sharply honest when Dreux sighs and mutters, “It shouldn’t have to be this hard.”

A glimmer of light in a dull month for movies. The chemistry that SZA and Keke Palmer have is unmatched and might be the best comedic duo in the last decade. Very funny situational & slapstick comedy with an undertone of sisterhood and community. This movie is much needed, especially for the LA community!

One of Them Days, produced by Issa Rae, is the kind of big-laughs, mid-budget theatrical comedy that used to be more common; it’s a shame TriStar scheduled a January release, because the film had the potential to be a summer hit. Its two charismatic leads alone make it worth seeing in a theater, surrounded by a crowd primed for a good time.

Palmer delivers an on-the-fly masterclass in overlapping comic skills, sometimes heightened (I love her eyeblink-quick, frozen-statue reaction to the good-looking, possibly homicidal hunk named Maniac, played by Patrick Cage), sometimes subtle and heartfelt.

Honestly, watching One of Them Days, you start to wonder why Palmer isn’t one of the biggest stars in the world by now, though part of the problem is that she’s a creature of comedy, and studios barely make them anymore. Even when the writing and pacing falls slack in this one, as it definitely does on occasion, she wrings laughs out of scenes with screwball physicality and surprising line readings.

Alyssa’s self-absorption may be harder to swallow, but Palmer and SZA enjoyably ham up what could otherwise be try-hard, too gimmicky fare.

I’m a longtime Palmer fan, and she’s almost never been this dull. She and SZA needed an edgier script to sparkle.

My spoiler-free review for #OneOfThemDays:Thanks to Keke Palmer and SZA’s chemistry plus twists and turns that leave you laughing but also wondering if they can succeed in the end, this original comedy is a blast that is what theaters should be doing more of and a movie more folks should see more of.10/10

A pure pleasure machine. Mostly pretty funny, bright, optimistic, with heart. A female buddy comedy with a relatable end goal (rent’s due) & a countdown clock. Great to see the scene stealer from “Nope” get to shine in a lead, and Keke Palmer glows. If she headlined every other movie from here on out, I’d be fine with that.

This movie had me and my girls weak in the knees. Definitely a movie that has many subtopics about the black community that we love and hate. It was definitely something millennials and gen z would enjoy. Great movie pick me up after work with friends or your boo. Even if you rent this movie in, you won’t regret it! Great acting for sza and keke ! They definitely capture the best friend duo. Issa Rae another phenomenal piece!

Keke Palmer & SZA plays best friend roommates. The misadventures begin when they realize that one of their boyfriends has blown their rent money and eviction is looming. This takes the duo all over their LA neighborhood, trying to chase down the culprit, while evading additional threats. The obstacles to their success range from slightly amusing to pushing credibility. The leads both have a natural chemistry, which is ideal since their friendship is the core of the movie. There are various supporting characters that add a bit of personality without much additional comedy. I’m not the target audience for this film and found it trying too hard to be outrageously funny, while only occasionally succeeding. Even so, the energy never lags and this particular “day” provides some raucous entertainment
