Now You See Me can’t quite claim to be the ideal crime drama – that would be “The Usual Suspects,” which justly won an Oscar for its script – but it’s only one level down.

The film itself is sly and smug in kind, fleetingly enjoyable for all of its old-school showmanship and high-tech hokiness.

Thanks to some accomplished hocus pocus and an appealing cast, this would-be “Ocean’s Eleven” of the magic world remains watchable throughout, even as it plods along without ever quite fulfilling its potential.

There is nothing magical about seeing one’s umpteenth car chase. Mark Ruffalo plays the weirdly scruffy FBI agent on the case, while Morgan Freeman, in super-slow mode, plays a famous magic debunker. He’d make the ideal critic for this movie.

For all its showmanship, Now You See Me has a lot less up its sleeve than it lets on.

It's all a little dumb, but the movie boasts several non-CG tricks and a few genuinely mesmerizing set pieces including a hand-to-hand-to-magic combat scene between Ruffalo and the spry Franco.

This is a slick con, all flash and no substance. Now You See Me seems awfully sure of itself, with self-important, intrusive music, sweeping tracking shots and actors chewing up the scenery.

Now You See Me doesn't always make sense and it's confusing, but I also had a lot of fun with it. The writing is overall very mixed if I look at it objectively, but as I said I really enjoyed it so that has to count too. The characters are mixed. The four horsemen are not likeable at all in my opinion. The cops are likeable and Dylan was probably my favourite character, because I only liked Alma and Thaddeus, because of their actors. The dialogues are extremely exposition-heavy, but in a way that I had to listen to some things again and there are two instances where I thought the plot doesn't make sense at all. The cinematography is mixed too. I loved the lighting, but the camera movement is too chaotic for my taste. The editing is great though, especially the pacing. These two hours flew by. The production design is good and the visual effects are convincing. The cast is insane, but not everyone fits their character. Jesse Eisenberg is just too unlikeable for the role. Although as I said, Morgan Freeman and Mélanie Laurent made me like their characters and it's always great to see Michael Cane in a film. The acting performances aren't too special, but I thought Mark Ruffalo was really good. SPOILERS from here:
Plot twist is good in the sense that I didn't expect it and it's presented well, but it's just not satisfying. Also, considering the first 100 minutes it also doesn't really make sense. Now You See Me doesn't always make sense, but I had a lot of fun with it.

Now You See Me pulls off some genuinely cool tricks, dazzling illusions, slick camera work, and Brian Tyler energetic score adds the right touch of mystery and excitement, the ensemble cast does a decent job too, everyone plays their part well enough to make the illusion believable, even if no one truly steals the show. That said, once the smoke clears and the cards are laid on the table, the movie grand reveal doesn't quite leave the jaw-dropping impact it aims for, the plot twist feels clever on the surface but not particularly moving or memorable for me personally, it's fun while it lasts, but it doesn't quite linger after the curtain falls. Overall, Now You See Me is a decent watch, fun in the moment, and carried by a strong cast, but it's not exactly a magical experience.

Very dumb slop its painful to watch the thing try and be so cool they really thought they had something and somehow they made woody harrleson really painfully lame and horribly miscast as usual no one cares about magic and no one cares about that piece of tunnel trash mark ruffalo i despise him deeply hes the worst who knows what hes done to get all those roles his face is toxic and horrible the whole thing is terrible im totally shocked to see anyone even sortof like it sincerely and no one cares about explaining the magician capers and how it all plays out no one cares its all just rediculous and uncomfortable

Given the movie's cast and word of mouth, I was expecting a lot more than I got. Not a total waste of time--the two female leads are gorgeous--but not far from it, either.
