The sentimental stuff half-works, but “Kids” never works up any silly sense of “Hate.” Without that conviction, the characters don’t make sense, the scenes don’t set up a debate that sets off sparks and I Hate Kids plays like “Actually, I’m not all that keen on kids.”

I endured this modest, sometimes vulgar and often insulting family flick for one reason only: an unusual chance to watch the charming, likable and woefully underrated Tom Hanks clone, Tom Everett Scott, in a rare leading role. Big mistake. We should all have stayed home with a good book or worthwhile rerun of a real family film like "Meet Me in St. Louis."

The single achievement of I Hate Kids, a new comedy directed by John Asher, is that it is simultaneously tepid and offensive.

In a genre populated by an unusually high percentage of nearly unwatchable movies — the surprise-paternity comedy — John Asher's I Hate Kids comes as something of a surprise. Not because it's any good (no, no, no), but because of the number of talented people who, presumably having read the witless script, agreed to appear in it.

Actions and emotions turn on a dime, chuckles are few and it’s clear this predictable film, directed by John Asher, doesn’t quite realize how retrograde and often offensive it is — which makes it all even worse.

This movie is funny! There are so many great actors in it. Tom Everett Scott is so handsome and his character has a total arc in the movie....which is what happens in good movies. He does a brilliant job in this and even when he is not nice in the beginning we still like him. You can understand why he likes the kid , Mason, who is so vulnerable, but funny at the same time. So great with them and Tituss Burgess playing against each other. Works really well. And fabulous cast of women in the movie with great comedic timing! For a fun, enjoyable evening, easy viewing...this is a good flic.

At his wedding rehearsal dinner, the author of the titular best-selling book (Tom Everett Scott) finds out he has a son by another woman. He sets out with a flamboyant psychic (Titus Burgess) combing thru his list of previous hookups to find the boy's mom. While there's plenty of potential in the setup, almost none of it's realized. Scott has handled comedy before with success and Burgess is naturally funny, but neither of them have much to work with here. On top of that, the mom encounters try way too hard to be quirky. The energy never lags, but the script never provides any moments of genuine humor. (Look for a cameo from director John Landis as another psychic.)
