Hot Summer Nights

Everything is dandy until it’s not and that’s what makes Hot Summer Nights such a stirring and vivid presentation. The stakes are real. Those stakes are what elevate the film from being strictly a chewy exercise in nostalgia.

It’s a flashy film, but also rather derivative. In the end, Hot Summer Nights is a study in the power of talented actors to elevate material.

Some characters are introduced and never fully explored. Others disappear without a trace, leaving the impression that key elements have been left on the cutting room floor. For Timothée Chalamet, one hopes for better luck next time.

A melodramatic and ham-fisted mashup of beachside-summer-I-came-of-age romance and birth-of-a-weed-dealer drama.

Elijah Bynum’s debut embracing every last cliche it can find in a perverse attempt to forge its own identity. It’s a noble effort that comes up empty. Instead of something original, we’re left with a sweaty pastiche that shares its protagonist’s desire to be all things to all people, only to wind up losing any sense of itself along the way.

As it cliff dives, unprompted, into reheated cocaine-nightmare territory done better by any number of 1990s ’70s nostalgia films before it, it not only ceases to be fun, but stops pretending it has any vision for where its lead characters should go.

Like the teenagers at its center, Hot Summer Nights tries too hard to look cooler than it ever could be.

I did not even read any of the so-called "expert" reviews that seem to trash this movie. I gave it 8/10 because once it grips you it has you until the very end. Good story (based on true story), good acting, well done. I have recommended it to several friends. they all liked it too.

An unexpectedly enjoyable watch. Hot Summer Nights generates a tantalizing atmosphere for those craving the introduction or revitalization of true passion in their lives. Timothée Chalamet (Daniel) and Maika Monroe (McKayla) manage to deliver an oddly convincing romantic narrative that will surely stick with me for years to come.

when the face pace moment comes, it's really good. but when the slow pace comes, it becomes sooooo draggy and boring.

Contrived and predictable in its plot sequencing and dialogue. It all adds up into not only a dull experience, but also a sour experience which is cemented by its awfully sad, and nasty climax. Hell, to quote the film, "You knew how this was all going to end didn't you?" I sure did film, myself and the audience, yeah we sure did.

Hot Summer Nights is pretty much just a showcase for Timothee Chalamet. I want to say that he saved this dry, forgettable mess, but he did not.
