This isn’t just about fringe cults on ranches anymore: It’s about social groups, theories about the world, the bubble you float around in on the internet, the candidate you believe in an election.

Only Errol Morris could make a murderer in prison come off more credible than pretty much anybody else in a true crime documentary.

I've been watching Charles Manson material, pretty much my entire life trying to understand how even with LSD he could be so charismatic that people would murder for him. I enjoyed this film greatly. They do a nice job of crime scene investigating and archival footage with Manson, and he really was quite full of himself.

While the documentary doesn’t provide conclusive proof of a link between any covert government operations and Manson, it’s at least fodder for lively debate (not to mention a Netflix documentary).

“CHAOS” ends up suggesting that the Manson murders were a grand plot, orchestrated from on high (by the CIA? the Deep State? Nixon?) to turn America against the counterculture. I don’t believe that theory for a second, but there’s one way I think it stays true to the spirit of Charles Manson: It’s pure madness.

It’s a complicated meta-commentary delivered loosely in the guise of a ghoulish conspiracy thriller, presented in rushed form to an audience that would happily devour many more hours of the actual ghoulish conspiracy thriller that this is not.

For all its avenues of inquiry, however, it never quite gels into more than a collection of tantalizing but unfounded theories.

This story alone is gripping enough to warrant further study, but this documentary has very little in the way of actually exploring the case so much as it focuses on the conspiracies surrounding it.

It delivers a chilling atmosphere, amplified by the haunting inclusion of Manson's own music. The documentary explores a compelling theory about the infamous murders, yet its execution stumbles. As the narrative unfolds, the presentation grows disjointed, with certain interviews feeling particularly muddled. While it sparks intrigue, it ultimately fails to maintain cohesion and clarity, leaving its potential unrealized.
