The Film Stage
With Costa’s nearly unfettered access to the main characters of modern Brazilian politics, the events of Apocalypse in the Tropics practically unfold in real time––a thrilling, profound documentary horror.

New York Magazine (Vulture)
It’s rich and dense, but it’s also propelled along by current events, accelerating as things reach their fearsome climax with the assault on Brasília — on those very federal buildings that 60-plus years ago held such promise. The terror and the tragedy on display are matched by the beauty of Costa’s filmmaking.

Apocalypse in the Tropics là phim tài liệu của Petra Costa phơi bày ảnh hưởng mạnh mẽ của phong trào Tin Lành lên chính trị Brazil.

A documentary that could easily pass as a horror film. Petra Costa portrays the chilling union between evangelicals and the Brazilian far right, as well as how they brought Jair Bolsonaro to power. The director cleverly parallels the almost theocratic scenario experienced in Brazil during this administration with the concepts of the Book of Revelation, approaching the subject from a theological and apocalyptically poetic perspective.

What makes Tropics so riveting is the way Costa constantly shifts between the epic and the intimate, the macro and the micro.

It is to Costa’s credit that she provides a soothing, reflective tone to the subject, both in her poetic voiceover and a hypnotically smooth editing that movies from drone shots of crowds, congregations, rallies, and protest marches to handheld closeups of politicians clawing their ways through teeming throngs of admirers.

The film backs away from the overtly personal narration of its predecessor, in pursuit of a bigger picture.

Costa is, above all, an excellent chronicler of the moods swirling in her nation, but there is a flipside to the way she paints the picture.

Excelente.
