Chris Gerolmo’s script isn’t at great pains to find the human factor here, and Phillip Noyce’s direction coats the whole unhappy affair in cold blue steel.

Though tech values and supporting performances (especially Knoxville's) are unimpeachable, Suspicion doesn't conjure its setting as persuasively as some of the other drug-centric rural dramas we've seen lately.

Taut and dark, with a spectacular performance by Clarke. Her accent, criticized by some reviewers as insufficiently "southern," is in fact dead-on southern Appalachian. The movie reflects the brooding Kentucky coal-town scene with clarity.

I am from pikeville, Ky. Whilst another reviewer claims they do indeed speak like a southern Appalachian in this film. I can assure you they do not. It isn’t long and drawn out enough. Words are pronounced different. One main giveaway is how “I” is pronounced. Even if they pronounce it “correctly” the draw would still be there and incredibly noticeable. Of course I’m going to watch anything pertaining to the area I am from. With that said, it is hard to watch mainly because of that. If you’re going to portray you’re from somewhere, you should at least get the accent right. If you aren’t from the area, I guess one could think it sounds “correct@

What Above Suspicion lacks in flashy direction, it makes up for in strong performances and gripping true-life material to draw from.

This halfway-there thriller still makes an excellent showcase for Emilia Clarke, shedding whatever “Game of Thrones” baggage she has left and hinting at the dangerous places she might yet take us.

A reality-based hillbilly thriller that can’t decide what flavour of noir to serve up, Above Suspicion is one of those curious failures that the current appetite for home streaming often rescues from theatrical limbo.

True crime buffs could find something here, but they might be better off reading the novel it's based on. Susan Smith's story deserved to be told, but there had to have been a better way to do it.

For all the star’s efforts, though, Above Suspicion will mostly just appeal to the crowd that found Hillbilly Elegy compelling. Everyone else will be left wishing they could see Khaleesi fly high and free again.

(Mauro Lanari) The story of the first murder conviction of an FBI agent: a below average boring movie.
