I haven't played much at all but I see all these comments likening it to Monster Hunter. Well I played MH Tri on Wii and played demo's of two of the others on newer consoles and I can't even get in to the demo's. They just feel clunky. In Toukiden 2 I thought the graphics and game world looked great. The OST was really nice. I liked the hack and slash gameplay but this is where it fell flat a bit for me. I love Ys and the action just didn't control as nicely in this. I loved the aesthetic of the game and it will keep me playing but I did think a few rimes should I just close the game and open an Ys game instead. This is nicer than Ys in some other ways though.

For me the best alternative to Monster Hunter. It improved my main complaints of the prequel while also keeping the strengths of it. Toukiden is set in an alternate universe Japan. Since ancient times a secret group called Slayers protects mankind from the threat of Oni. Oni are beings that life in another kind of space time and consume souls. They can enter our world with some kind of shenanigans (needs souls and they create a kind of body to use in our world if I understand it correctly) and if left uncontrolled warp our space time to something humans cant survive. In the past an event named “The Awakening” happen which was a massive onslaught of Oni. All Slayers could barely prevent mankind's destruction and are confined in the remaining parts of Japan not warped by the Oni. It is a constant struggle for survival. The main story is set 2 years after the events of Toukiden Kiwami. Your newly created hero is fighting in the beginning of what will later be known as “The Awakening” when he is mysteriously transferred forward in time. So begins an entertaining story. It focused on inner conflicts of a Village at the borders to the Oni territory, some political plots or schemes and characters backstories. Each character has his own story arc and carries his/her burden. Often they were not strong enough in the past or made mistakes that can not be corrected. It uses the Monster Hunter formula as you hunt different sized Oni (Medium size is new). You don't level up and your strength lies in your equipment and Mitamas. (Spirits of fallen Heroes, Monks, Spiritualist or Mythological beings of Japanese culture). These are also divided in multiple roles which adapt to different play styles (Defence for example gives you a small shield). These level up and learn new abilities or improvements (Active abilties must be equipped as you are limited). You created better equipment from loot that is obtained from Oni or found. There are multiple weapons with different play styles. Here whips and sword / shield styles are added. I used mostly the twin blades (very fast attack speed), Katana (Slower but stronger) and gloves (Slow but powerful). Other additions are now a complete overworld and the “Demon Hand” item that can be used for transport or attacking. Technically / visually the game looks great. The Oni look amazing especially the bigger ones (I would buy an artbook). The music is atmospheric. A complaint by many was that the prequel was to easy. Here you can increase the difficulty to your hearts content (also get better loot and with this better equipment). The content is easily enough for 50-100 hours or more. Overall this is an excellent alternative to Monster Hunter and was fully worth my time and money.

Great title with tons of replay value and lots of fun bosses that is pretty much essential if you enjoy hunting games. Gets zero stars though because Tecmo-Koei are insufferable tools that insist on disabling external music and Spotify in every one of their releases. Every single moment that Toukiden 2 is running is considered a "blocked scene" just to make sure that players cannot listen to their own music. It's beyond trash ordinarily, but the fact that this a game in a genre which requires hundreds of hours of heavy grinding makes it unforgivable. If they ever update their game and fix this crap I will update my score. Until then, I've got nothing but a huge middle finger for Tecmo-Koei and every other dev that tries to pull this stupid BS. I will never understand why Sony even allows it in the first place.

I liked Toukiden 1/Kiwami, but lets be honest, it was simply another monster hunter clone with a different setting and story and a little bit different mechanics. Toukiden 2 is finally more than just a simple clone. It's more like a game standing on it's own with a bit of the MH formula in it. Toukiden 2 is an open world hack-n-slash rpg-ish game with a nice story, a lot of sidequests and a beautiful world. The combat system didn't change much and also the weapon classes are almost the same as before, but that dont really hurt the game and I personally liked/like it. Little changes here and there, like the demon claw and some new weapon classes are welcome additions but not really ground breaking. The grafics are still dated, but far prior to the first entry or kiwami and from the design standpoint are really beautiful at times. The open world seems relatively small at first but opens up into new areas and landscapes as you progress in the story. There is a lot to see and do here with little sidequests, hidden treasures or fights between oni and other slayers you can occasionally stumble upon. On the other Hand it never feels like its to much, or overwhelming like in in so many other open world games... The game focuses even more on the story than toukiden 1 did and yes you have a lot to read because there are only english subs and no dub, but I had no trouble with it, even while fighting a boss enemy. And seriously, if it's to much for you to read a text for a minute, then go play cod... What I don't understand is why there is no sub when you're out in the field and the people in your group doing their occasionally chatter. Yes it's no essential chatter ****? The story itself is nice, but nothing too special. If you liked the story of the first entry, you will like this one too. Anyway, if you have enough of the story for the moment you can always go out and do some sidequests, online with friends, or alone, go on a hunt for items for better equipment, go into the ruins and battle your way down the floors or just explore the world. As mentioned before, there is a lot to do. To sum things up, the game improves the Monster Hunter formula in the right places, but stays true to itself. If you liked Toukiden 1 / Kiwami, you will love this one. If you like Monster Hunter style games, you will like this one too. If you love Monster Hunter style games but dont like the japanese setting, you should at least try this one because it does a lot of things better then MH and other games of this type/genre.

Toukiden 2 Like Reading a Book In Toukiden 2 you create your characters and play as a slayer You get zapped 10 years into the future and you lose all of your memories… This game has a decent cast of characters but I quickly lost interest because of how much reading there actually is here.. This is a port from japan... there are no English dubs here, so it’s going to be hard for anyone that doesn’t speak Japanese to really enjoy this game… The lack of English dubs is really prevalent during battles and tutorials… The game is trying to tell you how to play as you play… Very easy to die and take damage while you’re trying to read the paragraph of text... try to comprehend the system the game is trying to teach all while fighting enemies… This is an open world hack and slash game… You get materials around the world to craft better weapons and armor while you complete the various tasks from the village you’re living in… The game slowly introduces new mechanics… in addition to just being a straight up hack and slash game.. you’re introduced to a demon hand/claw move that you use to pull yourself into enemies, pull off special tasks, and proceed though areas in this open world… You’ll also every once in a while get tasked with taking out an oni.. hunting it down in a shallow witcher 3 style of just following its tracks and take it out by cutting off different botty parts and weakening it… there is no health gage on enemies though so boss battles can definitely feel like a grind… Even with your party of 4 members that do great at holding their own… But you’re rewarded with new mitama each time, which are essentially stat boost cards that add new perks and abilities to your character but at a cost… such as your health gradually decreasing when a bonus is active… Unfortunately the rest of the game feels just as grindy as these boss battles… mostly because of the lack of English dubs… You basically go to a spot on the map, return, read a harry potter book, go to another spot on the map to hunt down a giant oni.. Return read another harry potter book rinse and repeat... There’s an unbearable amount of reading here… after 3 hours of reading I was completely over the story and just started skipping through to the gameplay… Which again... isn’t that great either… The world is beautiful at times and fun to explore, but there are very brief moments of battle sandwiched in between a book. Toukiden 2 is an okay game. If you like reading more than you like playing… I give Toukiden 2 a 6/10

Huge improvement over Toukiden 1 and Kiwami. It's taken forever for one of these Monster Hunter type games to embrace an open world design. Definitely doesn't feel like Koei-Tecmo's usual Warriors gimmick where they slap a couple new characters in it, rework the story a tad and release a bare bones sequel. They actually mixed it up a great deal. The character models are a lot better, and the character customization is much deeper. The Demon's Hand and "soul dash" mechanics make traversing the world fun. My only gripes for Omega Force would be to try to better match Monster Hunter's difficulty. That and substantially up the world's graphics, with recent titles like Hyrule Warriors and Dragon Quest Heroes we know they're capable. Omega Force needs to step into the next generation already instead of tending to frequently hang two generations behind everyone else graphically. It's most likely the Vita that's holding everyone back. The game is a blast though. Hopefully as they perfect the hunting game formula they can eventually prod Capcom into playing with the big dogs again where big monsters belong----on the big screen. The 3DS 800 x 240 res 4.88' screen just doesn't cut it for slaying life sized dragons and it's a shame. This title is really worth around a 7.5/10. I'm giving it a 10/10 because some moron gave it a 2.

I like the Toukiden series as it does a lot to speed up the "monster hunter" formula. It removes a lot of the tedium, almost too much if you ask me. There is something really methodical about preparing for your hunt and tracking down a beast in MH, but sometimes you just want to fight the monsters! This is where Toukiden 2 shines. It gets you to the action quickly. It also has a decent story. If you like games like God Eater, Freedom Wars, and Soul Sacrifice...I think you will love this game!

This game fails hard trying to copy the Monster Hunter Formula. Also graphics are dated, bad quality gameplay. They were afraid to risk doing something amazing, and stoped on mediocre. Dont fall for it

Yes! The closest you'll get to the monster hunter franchise within PS4 and PC realm. This is Toukiden 1 on steroid. Faster combats, new weapons set, and a new demon claw feature that is just absolutely a delight to play with. Definitely a stark improvement from the first one. Better yet, it's better animated and voice acted than Mass Effect Andromeda, this is a buy. Especially if you've been hungry for a Monster Hunter game on PC or PS4. Thanks Koei!
