Tomb Raider Reloaded

A full and entertaining experience in its own right, Tomb Raider Reloaded is fun, free, and challenging in all of the right places. A few visual errors, steep difficulty spikes, and high amounts of ads might scare some off, but the roguelite underneath is an absolute joy to play.

Tomb Raider Reloaded is a small but pleasant surprise, a single stick shooter with a colorful and comic look in which we control a "chibi" version of Lara Croft who shoots left and right in an attempt to overcome rooms that are increasingly full of enemies and deadly traps.

Tomb Raider Reloaded has a fun gameplay loop thanks to its intuitive mobile design. The roguelike elements create genuinely challenging combat encounters, and I was a fan of the auto-fire combat design. That said, I was a bit annoyed with how shamelessly the game tries to sway you to spend time and money on it, and the sheer amount of non-gameplay features and mechanics felt like overkill. If you’re someone that can look past the stereotypical mobile game shenanigans, Tomb Raider Reloaded is a solid addition to your mobile gaming library.

Tomb Raider Reloaded is a simple and fun product that can keep you entertained for a few hours. After that, the problems that distinguish most of these free to play productions begin to emerge. The flow of gameplay is abruptly interrupted upon completion of the third location, a moment in which an insurmountable barrier is revealed that requires hours and hours of grinding or the use of a credit card to be able to be circumvented. The title of Emerald City Games is also less generous than other of its more illustrious colleagues and the lack of mechanics such as the automatic completion of the levels makes progression even less easy. In short, it is a perfect experience for a game every now and then, but which in the long run shows all its limits.

Tomb Raider Reloaded has a lot of potential. Overall, it needs more focus on smoothing out the last of its gameplay issues and less on the progression hooks. Opening the app to that cluttered menu only reminded me that I can get the best parts of Reloaded elsewhere. The same goes for Lara herself.

Its good ideas are plagued by microtransactions and that's a shame. Lara deserves way better.
