The fact that you can't skip a single cutscene and that some save points are far apart are also relics of previous Telltale adventures that I'm not particularly stoked about. You could therefore say that the new old studio is still very much the old one, despite the closure, takeover and new start. Which also means, maybe most importantly, that it captures the essence of the source material very skillfully, which is why I can recommend The Expanse: A Telltale Series to fans of the series despite the criticisms.
The Expanse: A Telltale Series works well as a tie-in, because it recreates the atmosphere of the series and explores the past of a loved character (Cara Gee as Drummer is amazing as always!). However, as a whole, it is a middling game that ends before it really gets going. I also regret that the developers missed the opportunity to delve deeper into The Expanse’s universe, as this setting has a lot to offer.
The Expanse: A Telltale Series is a return to form, though that form is almost out of style. Each of the five episodes takes an average of about two hours to complete if you’re hunting for all of the collectibles, so the amount of content is on the shorter end. But if you’re looking for solid writing and characters that fit well within The Expanse universe, this adventure is another chance to revisit the series and see Camina Drummer be a badass all over again. However, the dated mechanics and the game’s choice to be a prequel impair the effort.

I had no idea about the show when this game was first announced. However, after a YouTuber I follow mentioned how much they loved the series, I made a mental note of both the game and the show. When the game went on a decent sale, I decided to pick it up. I figured it would be better to watch a few seasons of the show first just to grasp the jargon. After finishing Season 3, I finally started the game. The protagonist of the game is Camina Drummer, a character I already loved in the show, and I must say I really enjoyed playing as her. It is a good start, but there big problems I couldn't ignore. The first thing that caught my eye, though, were the strange-looking faces. Virgil’s face, in particular, looked like a high-society woman who’d had way too much Botox. This oddity in the facial animations bothered me from start to finish. Aside from that, the graphics and controls weren't bad at all. While I enjoyed the first three episodes, the last two were incredibly poor. The biggest issue is that the choices don't force you to think even for a second. There were choices that everyone would naturally pick unless they were trying to mess up on purpose. The player percentages at the end of each episode clearly back me up on this. Another point of criticism is the overly simplistic gameplay. Elements like aiming or melee combat could have definitely been more detailed. When you combine the lack of mechanical depth with an uninspiring story, the result is a completely mediocre game. I wish they had told an original story within the universe, similar to what they did with the Game of Thrones game. Creating their own plot and characters would have made the experience much more engaging. Despite all these negatives, the game still managed to keep me playing until the end—that’s worth noting. Final verdict: If you’ve watched and enjoyed The Expanse, you might like this. But if you have no connection to the series, I doubt you’ll find it appealing.

I really enjoy this game. I didn’t expect to like this type of game, which is basically an interactive cartoon, but it’s fantastic. I love the sci-fi setting, the story, the characters, and the music. It’s a game anyone can pick up, no hardcore gameplay, just a super relaxing experience perfect for a few hours on a quiet afternoon. I like it so much that I’m interested in exploring the series it’s based on. For me, it’s an easy perfect score. I just wish there was more of it because I’m eager for more story and new adventures. The Expanse: A Telltale Series.

In a world of enormous RPGs with seemingly endless side quests and huge maps, The Expanse: A Telltale Series is a refreshing change of pace, and proves that sometimes, less is more. A great RPG doesn't necessarily need to be a 60-hour adventure; it just needs to convincingly drop you into another person's magboots. The Expanse does that and then some, forcing you to make difficult decisions that will haunt you long after you've finished playing.

The Expanse: A Telltale Series is a fun game that doesn’t stray from Telltale’s normal formula but is strong when viewed within that category. If you like the show or the books, you’ll get a kick out of it.

Eins meiner absoluten Lieblingstelltale The Expanse!

This game is really great for Telltale's reviving You know some people may say blaa blah the old ones blah blah But dude it's 2023 you don't have your ps2 anymore everything is upgraded the graphics the gameplays everything The game having good graphic doesn't mean that developers focused on graphics because it has a great story too

The Expanse shines as an alternative to the sleek space-age dream of franchises such as Star Trek, with its scrappy, survival sci-fi setting pairing perfectly with the gritty art-style and choice-driven narrative of Telltale Games.

Telltale’s entry to The Expanse feels like an obvious move. A world rife with conflict, character and violence is reimagined through the snarky and laser-focused lens of Camina Drummer - and it’s brimming with life and excitement. This carefully spun narrative buries the arbitrary action gameplay, and is totally worth the few hours you’ll need spare to sink this game.

The Expanse: A Telltale Series is a solid entry in the studio’s long-running series of narrative-driven games. The episodes look great, and Cara Gee’s performance as the main character is excellent, helping to recreate the feel of the television series even when the most of the regular characters from the show are absent. The game struggles to find engaging mechanics outside of its dialogue scenes, relying too heavily on quicktime events and mediocre movement challenges. But the story and choices you make work well enough that these are minor faults.

The Expanse: A Telltale Series is a short, unexciting, and slow narrative adventure, full of unlikable characters and repetitive gameplay. Despite a great performance from Cara Gee as Drummer and a few engaging player choices, it is a waste of space.

I love telltale but the expanse just wasn’t it. I heard it was developed by another studio so the drop in quality seems to make sense. I hope they kill it with the wolf among us 2 ️

I will give the current developers credit for the visuals of the game as well as certain aspects of the gameplay. I have always been a huge fan of The Telltale Games, it has become very obvious to me that the spark that gave life to the older games of Telltale is no more. It's very clear to me that the newer developers cared more about how the game looked then they did about creating an environment with both a compelling story as well as characters that you naturally gravitated towards. These characters are so forgettable... Dull, that's the only word I can think of when I think about these characters in the story, The protagonist has this very strange monotone voice that gives you meaningless narration throughout your gameplay, and her colleagues that around her do not provide any sense of camaraderie, or any sense of belonging with the very minimal dialog options you have to interact with them. I really hate to compare the new developers with the old, but I will never forget that first episode I played as Lee in The Walking Dead series when I ran into Clementine. Their interaction was so believable and genuine. It glued me in the moment I played it for the first time. Something is missing, I don't feel a connection between the characters and the protagonist. I don't think these developers realize that the thing that drew us in so closely with the older games was literally the story itself, and how the characters interacted with each other. I am honestly kind of sad that this is all they have to bring to the table. A little bit of profanity doesn't bother me when I'm trying to indulge in a story, but it needs to fit with the circumstance. I feel like the writers for this dialog decided to drop F bombs needlessly just to fill empty space In between their gray storytelling.
