If only the developers had focused on delivering a simple, fun experience rather than trying to create something far beyond their reach.
Not only are the voices horrible, as is the case for most Sonic games, but the story makes very little sense. It’s like if you took any basic Nintendo story like Mario saving the Princess, lengthened it to several hours long, and filled it with mindless details that make no logical sense at all.
Atrocious camera angles lead to cheap deaths, the slippery controls make it difficult to get a handle on the characters and the game has a large problem with pacing. It tries to mix in side missions with general stages, and the disastrous results ruin the game.

I went out and bought an Xbox 360 in 2023 solely to play this game. The game is definitely horrible, but I genuinely cannot help myself but to come back to this game and try to do some of the craziest stuff imaginable within this broken game. Also, Silver the Hedgehog is my favorite Sonic character, I really like him.

Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) is the definition of chaotic brilliance. Is it polished? Absolutely not. Is it stable? Questionable. But is it iconic? Oh, 100%. This game doesn’t walk into the room—it kicks the door down, trips over its own shoelaces, and somehow still lands in a dramatic anime pose like it meant to do ****’s be real: the ambition here is insane. Three intertwined stories, a semi-open world, cinematic cutscenes that look like they were directed with maximum emotional intensity—it’s like the game is constantly yelling, “WE’RE DOING PEAK FICTION TODAY,” whether the engine can handle it or not. And honestly? You kind of have to respect that energy.Playing as Sonic, Shadow, and Silver feels like three different flavors of chaos. Sonic is speed with zero brakes, Shadow is basically a one-hedgehog action movie, and Silver… look, Silver’s just out here yelling “IT’S NO USE!” while tossing enemies like he’s got something to prove. And you know what? He does prove it. Eventually. After you get launched into the sky a few **** compare that to New Super Mario Bros.. That game is like plain toast. Reliable? Sure. Tasty? I mean… it exists. It’s so safe it probably looks both ways before crossing the street in a video game. Meanwhile, Sonic 2006 is speeding through ten intersections at once, ignoring traffic laws, physics, and sometimes reality itself—and somehow making it **** here’s the wild part: despite all the glitches, loading screens, and “wait, what just happened?” moments, there’s a weird charm you can’t replicate. It’s memorable. It’s bold. It’s the kind of game people talk about years later because it tried to be something bigger than itself. It aimed for the stars, missed, hit a satellite, bounced off, and still kept **** yeah, Sonic 2006 might not be the cleanest ride—but it’s one you’ll never forget. And honestly? That alone gives it more personality than a lot of games that played it safe and faded into the background. Sometimes being a glorious mess is way more fun than being perfectly average.

You simply can't ask for more out of an action game. Mission accomplished. Sonic is born anew. [Dec 2006; Score revised in Jan issue due to long load times.]

Next-gen Sonic is awkward, dogged by awful levels and a terrible hub system, plus the basic action never gets that challenging. When you die, it’s because you couldn’t see, or you fell off by accident. It's hugely frustrating.

Amo muito esse jogo, como kusoge acho muito divertido ... Porém é um jogo problemático cheio de bugs, história confusa... Porém a soundtrack é lendária (pelo menos isso...) HIS WORLD!

The simple fact is that a dodgy camera, dubious controls, unspectacular visuals, repeated falling to your death and almost constant load breaks have all but ruined what should have been a brilliant game.

Sonic the Hedgehog may share its name with the Genesis original, but this game is even more broken than most of the other recent Sonic games have been.

GamesRadar+
Every installment has us hoping for a return to glory, but each one further craps on the hedgehog's legacy. The redeeming qualities here are few and far between, and it's just plain not fun.

Edge Magazine
The consistently poor controls of Sonic’s 3D outings make it seem like Sonic Team has convinced itself that this is how this aspect of the franchise should rightly be, and everyone else should just learn to deal with it. [Christmas 2006, p.82]

SEGA's decision to rush one of its most beloved franchises to the next-gen market has ended in a broken product that does not even deserve a rental.

You may enjoy it occasionally if you love sonic and have had experience with the other sonic games with this genre like I have but overall this game isn't the best, but also isn't the worst in my opinion. The huge sense of completion after finishing all stories really made this game worth the completion. (Just dont take the story seriously its not great)

I didn't realize how rough Sonic 2006 actually is. After 2 hours, I get why critics hated it. The controls are bad, the frame rate struggles a bit, and the story is a muddy mess. There are a few cool ideas buried in here, but overall this is more frustrating than fun.
