Arcade Archives: Renegade is like a time capsule full of tchotchkes; it's cool to open it up and take a look but there's very little substance that remains useful in this day and age.

Renegade/Nekketsu Kōha Kunio-kun represents a lovely and important piece of forgotten video game history. For the hardcore fans that were raised on it, or simply as a curio for a new generation of gamers looking to find out on how the scrolling beat-'em-up began, this is still a recommended if not essential purchase. There are certainly better options of the genre on the Switch already, but none of them might have even existed if Kunio didn't have such a short temper in 1986.

I didn't see any user reviews for this game, so I decided to make one myself. Renegade is part of the Kunio-Kun series, which includes fighting games like Renegade and River City Ransom and sports games like Super Dodge Ball. This is a pretty fun game, it's a scrolling beat-em-up where you try to get to the end of each stage. There's a part of this game that takes place in a subway, and the level designs are great. However, you can only play as Kunio, which would be better to add more characters. Overall, Renegade is a fun beat-em-up, and it's one of the earliest scrolling beat-em-ups. However, the lack of characters to select makes the game feel worse, but that's just a minor problem.
