Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir takes a good game and makes it incrementally better. The tweaks to the overall title, including better inventory management and more emphasis on combat, opens it up to those who weren't enamored with the original. The option is there for those who want to play it as it was originally intended. It provides lots of gameplay time, which is something of a rarity in console titles nowadays, though there will be a few who take offense to the fact that a good chunk of content is recycled a few times. It does all this with a presentation that still manages to impress after all these years.

️ THE HAND — 9.5/10 | Gameplay & InteractivityTo play Odin Sphere Leifthrasir is to witness a rare alchemy—a beloved classic not just remastered, but reborn. This version boldly reimagines its gameplay, transforming it from a methodical, tactical experience into something fluid, fast-paced, and exhilarating, reminiscent of character-action greats like Devil May Cry. A new skill tree, seamlessly integrated with a refined progression system, creates an addictive loop of power growth. While the challenge is slightly tempered from the original's punishing standard, it remains deeply engaging, especially on higher difficulties. The true genius lies in its five distinct protagonists; though they traverse familiar stages, each feels and plays so differently that repetition never sets in, replaced instead by the joy of mastering five unique combat styles. The inclusion of the original gameplay mode is the gold standard for remasters, honoring its legacy while fearlessly innovating. THE HEART — 10/10 | Narrative & ProgressionThis exhilarating playstyle perfectly complements a narrative that is nothing short of a masterpiece. The story is a magnificent, non-linear epic told through five intertwining perspectives. Piecing together this timeline is a delight in itself, a rewarding puzzle that slowly reveals the interconnected fates of its cast. Each character’s arc is fully realized and emotionally resonant, building toward a climax that is a masterclass in convergence—a cathartic payoff of sorrow, wonder, and hope that lingers long after the credits roll. The faster pace ensures you are always driven forward, eager to uncover the next well-crafted twist. THE MIND — 10/10 | Philosophy & Thematic ResonanceBeneath this grand fairy-tale surface lies a sharp, deconstructive mind. The game is a brilliant and conscious re-examination of European fantasy, Norse mythology, and Disney-style narratives. It uses these familiar foundations to build something new and profoundly subversive. It presents a clear anti-monarchy, anti-hegemony stance, critiquing rulers who are negligent or abusive toward their citizens and children. It also offers a nuanced, organic critique of gender roles within the genre, empowering its female characters with agency without feeling preachy. It is a forward-thinking work that respects its inspirations even as it re-imagines them, ensuring it will age with gr️ THE EYE — 10/10 | Artistic Vision & AtmosphereAll of this is wrapped in an aesthetic that remains virtually peerless nearly two decades later. The visuals are a landmark achievement—gorgeous, painterly illustrations animated with a breathtaking blend of classic Disney warmth and high-end anime dynamism. Every character and stage is a richly detailed work of art that inspires creativity. The Japanese voice acting is superlative, imbuing each character with remarkable depth, and the enchanting soundtrack, though not vast, perfectly complements the game’s melancholic and wondrous mood. CONCLUSION & FINAL FRAGMENTOdin Sphere Leifthrasir is a definitive work. It is a perfect storm of refined gameplay, masterful storytelling, visionary themes, and timeless artistry. It doesn’t just belong in the conversation about video games as art—it deserves to be on the cover of that album.

Addictive, beautifully crafted, and fun overall, this game is a complete masterpiece, made me fell in love with vanillaware. Everyone should play it once, is everything an action rpg can be done right.

I became a fan of 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim and Unicorn Overlord, and after discovering that both were developed by Vanillaware, I decided to explore more of their games. That led me to Odin Sphere, which I dove into without any prior knowledge. The moment I saw its captivating art style, I knew I had to play it. Initially, I thought it was just a visually appealing platformer, but as I delved into the battle mechanics, the game became even more enjoyable. The story also became increasingly engaging as it unfolded. My only complaint is that I had to replay the same stages multiple times. Overall, I had a fantastic time with it.

Odin Sphere Leifthrasir is a cult classic for good reason. It's a strange title, but an engrossing one that's only let down by some one-note characters.

One of the best Vanillaware's title made even better on PlayStation family's console. Brilliant in every way: gameplay, story and artistic style.

Odin Sphere Leifthrasir is a masterpiece of game design, and one of the forgotten gems of the PS2 era. I can’t recommend it enough, and it stands head and shoulders above other remakes on how to get the job done. For those that never experienced the original it is a must buy, but even for those with fond memories of the glorious Vanillaware classic, this package is more than worth a second dip.

To say that I was surprised by Odin Sphere Leifthrasir is the understatement of the century. Despite having an original code base that dates back two console generations, it still manages to feel modern and just as relevant today as it did nine years ago.

Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir is a must-play for fans of the original or platformers in general. Expertly written and well executed, the title played like some sort of grand theater, possessing a narrative that was both familiar but also new, filled with dynamic characters who interacted seamlessly not only with each other but also with the world itself. Don’t let a few minor issues put you off, Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir is a top-tier action RPG effort that is more than worthy of your time.

If you’ve played any side-scrolling games, chances are you’ve incidentally played this one. Odin Sphere is undoubtedly fun, but its 40-hour quest etches too long to repel the armies of repetition. It’s charm and aesthetic character are the real arrows for its quiver - the crux to get your attention and to keep it.

I'm really surprised that more hasn't been made about just how repetitive this game is. Great graphics can only take a game so far. You essentially have to complete the same game five times. About 15 hours in I hit the wall and it was drop to easiest difficulty and skip all story scenes. Playing on higher difficulty levels just means enemies take more hits to kill and the story is childish boring and derivative. Excellent artwork with superb presentation and voice acting but who cares when the gameplay makes you not want to play anymore.
