If you're a Suda-51 enthusiast or if it's on sale, then it'll be worth it, but other than that, it's a tiny distraction that provides a little entertainment, closer to an app game than something you'd play on a proper console, even a handheld one.
A beautiful shooter hampered only by its being too small for the grand scale it implies. [Christmas 2012, p.96]

With only five stages, it's hard to justify the price tag unless you intend to chase high scores. [Christmas 2012, p.91]

While the game may be fast and fleeting, Liberation Maiden is a fun shooter with a lot simple mechanics, and interesting concepts. It's only a shame that the game couldn't be more than what it is, but if you're able to catch it up on sale and have some vain interest it, it would be worth to pick it up and see what all the fuss is about.

While this is not a "Triple A" game, this game is an excellent callback to old school arcade games. Visually great for an early 3DS game, with one of the best soundtracks I've heard in a game ever, and tough, but rewarding gameplay. While on the short side, it is very replayable when trying to beat your high score. A must own title for indie lovers.

This game is absolutely solid, but really short. If you're going to dish out 8 bucks for this game, I highly recommend taking a look at gameplay videos to see if it's truly your jam. I managed to get it for 3$ (sale @ end of 2014), and have no regrets - in fact, it's one of my favorite 3DS eShop games. The gameplay is so solid, so cool, and so fast-paced that the fact that there are five levels doesn't really seem unappealing to me. The music is absolutely wonderful, particularly the first and last stage boss songs. There's variety in the missions, though the missions' true goal is pretty much the same. Submissions are nice, and yeah - good stuff. Anyways I'd totally buy this if you can get this during a sale. If not, think about whether or not you're ready for a jet packed, short self-version **** like Kid Icarus (sky battles)! A striking action-packed shoot-'em-up that's up there with the best in the genre.

Liberation Maiden is one of the best games on the e-Shop. The Grasshopper Manufacture's title convinces thanks to a precise control system and well paced rhythm.

This game was absolutely perfect. At no time did I ever regret this purchase because any flaw that the game had was easily drowned out by the amount of fun that I was having while playing it. The music in the game beautifully matched the action and tempo of the game, going from fights with smaller enemies to fighting mission bosses, adding in both volume and lyrics. It has good amount of re-playability, especially in Stage Attack mode where you can compete to break your score and try to get all the bonus achievements. Plus, since the stages are also pretty short, it is a great game to play anywhere while you're waiting around. Even after wearing my hands out, I couldn't wait to play again.

Liberation Maiden meets its goal as part of a package and never really goes beyond that.

Despite being a fun game, it's very bare, with few levels just relying on replaying for it to get any kind of lasting value. No matter how much you loved the game, though, replaying the same five is not enough for me to give this amazing, fun, beautiful game the high rank that it deserves.

Liberation Maiden offers a surprisingly short experience, but if it were much longer the sense of repetition would probably become quite irksome. For all its flashy visuals and instantly gratifying action, this isn't a game that boasts a tremendous amount of variety or depth.

Play Liberation Maiden because you're after an acceptable arcade shooter, in other words; approach it expecting another wonky blast of Suda51 charm and, President Mech aside, you're going to be a little disappointed.

I'll get straight to the point. If you're a fan of the twisted works of Suda 51, Anime and non-stop blow-the-living-crap-out-of-anything-that-moves action, you'll love this game. You will blow through it pretty fast, but it's worth the money. If you have an extra five bucks left-over from your last purchase, I recommend buying this shooter.

There are some games like this : you only have to play for 30 seconds to know it's gonna be good. Liberation Maiden is one of those. Backed by a story and a character design kinda mixing Evangelion and Infinite Stratos, the game has you play has Shôko, a high school girl who is at the same time... President of Japan!!! Yes. In Liberation Maiden, politicians aren't fat cats making broken laws. True, the situation calls for immediate action as an unknown life form has invaded and corrupted the whole country. Shôko is entrusted with the fateful mission of wiping the aliens out and making the land green again. Learning how to play Liberation Maiden takes approximately... 4 seconds! Quite a performance since it feels so complicated when you have to explain it. You fire lasers by tapping the touchscreen, but the enemies are on the upper screen and the touchscreen is black (save for the simple map). The attack you fire lands on the upper screen a the equivalent location to where you've tapped on touchscreen. You are therefore empirically thinking your next move depending of where the precedent one hit (because of course you NEVER have to time to glance at the touchscreen). At 10 bursts/second, it's absolutely natural. This epic gameplay is further reinforced by the hazardous environment. Lasers, missiles, infrared radars come from everywhere and let you no time to breathe. The boss battles are even heated and unforgiving. Graphically speaking, it's rather ugly, probably due to the low budget. But on the other hand you do have an outstanding sound environment. The sound of lasers, explosions, the rumbling of the dying aliens, the characters' lines, the little messages you receive from inhabitants upon completing an objective : all that makes Liberation Maiden the closest game to Evangelion I've ever seen. But of course, you will needed the original Japanese version for that, English dubs would only hurt your ears. True, the game is short (3 to 4 hours), it's repetitive, it has some punitive difficulty spikes, but for 8

I beat it in about 4 or 5 hours and didn't die a single time through the whole game until the last boss fight. The gameplay, although very stylish and fun, is so easy and brainless that it all just seems pointless. And there is no real reason to play through the game again. For 8 bucks, I don't know. I'd say it's worth it if you like anime and stuff. Don't buy this if you are a hardcore fan of shmups. This is not for you. This is for causals and anime enthusiasts. You will not be challenged by this game, you will be insulted. You have been warned.
