Kill the Shadow is a vibrant and thoroughly non-linear adventure with a well-crafted world, charismatic characters, and a dark, deep story full of dirty secrets. It's a small diamond atop a huge mountain of indie games and cloned garbage.

Despite some audio issues and an overly easy deduction system, Kill the Shadow’s compelling supernatural story successfully immerses players in the machinations of its fictional post-war Chinese world.

This game is more of objective 7.5 due to some short-comings in gameplay or presentation but on a personal/biased level this game is a 9 for me and most likely my personal GOTY 2026 so far. Great humour, great writing, unique presentation of dialogue, voice acting in the native language is great. 2.5 presentation style is really cool and unique. Surprisingly this game touches on some very heavy subject matters despite the quirky and colourful aesthetic of characters and the environment. This game really does a great job of painting humanity for you. Just when you think you can condemn someone for their actions you then see the reasons and causes and you start to reconsider whether you had the right assessment. An amazing game that I kind of think of now and again. That's how I know this game was pretty special that I would think about its narrative after I've finished playing it. My only regret is that I can't experience it again for the first time. Works well on steam deck too, so you can play on the go or away from your set up.
