Deep within the treasured memories of my childhood lies Heroes of Might and Magic III, a game that felt less like pixels and code and more like a living, breathing world I could call my own. It was never just a game to me—it was an escape, a place where my imagination could run wild and where I held the power to shape entire kingdoms. I still remember the quiet hum of the computer as the game loaded, the way my heart raced when the map unfolded, revealing an uncharted land brimming with promise and peril. Every choice I made felt monumental. Would I send my hero into the unknown, risking it all for a forgotten artifact, or fortify my city, watching it grow into an unshakable bastion of power? The hours would slip away like sand through my fingers. The hauntingly beautiful music became the soundtrack of my youth, a melody that still stirs something deep within me whenever I hear it. Those battles, each one a test of my wit and courage, taught me more about strategy—and myself—than I could have ever imagined. Even now, I can picture the thrill of victory, the ache of defeat, and the bittersweet feeling of turning off the computer, knowing the adventure would be waiting for me again tomorrow. Heroes of Might and Magic III wasn’t just a game; it was a companion to my dreams, a world where I was the hero, the builder, the conqueror. Looking back, it’s not just the gameplay that sticks with me, but the feeling it gave me—the sense that anything was possible, that even the smallest choice could spark something extraordinary. Those moments will forever be a part of who I am, a reminder of a time when the world felt as infinite and magical as those maps I once explored.

For a long time, it is the only game that can challenge the dominance of Blizzard to me.

An expansion better than the already real good main game. It has challenging campaigns, good stories and makes some very good additions. Lets begin with a set up for the game: It is a fantasy turn base strategy game including base building. It has a great game mechanics that are easy to learn and have also a lot of depth for you to master. You are a commander of an army of various units or creatures and building / developing structures in your stronghold. There are various factions with individual strongholds and units. Per round (= 1 day) you can build a structure or upgrade an existing requiring gold and resources. The structures let you recruit a fixed number of new units at the start of each week for an amount of gold. Stronger units require more structures before you can recruit them. Upgrades let you hire stronger versions with better stats and/or new abilities. For the exploration or battle part you maneuver your character including recruited units over the map (Range depends on slowest units, terrain and learned skills). Your character is not a unit you can use in battle. He is the commander or general. However he / she is far from useless. Your attribute-points are added to your units fixed attributes. This made them more powerful and at high levels even low tier units can outclass high tier ones without this bonus (Warning also applies to enemy commanders units). Also you can use spells which can be devastating especially at expert levels (skill at max level needed). There are various items you can find that boost your attributes or skills. Important is that you capture mines / woodcutter hoods and find deposits of materials as these are needed for upgrades of your strongholds (Reach them and you get a fixed amount of resources per day as long as no enemy reaches them afterwards). As you level up you can learn skills. These can vary from doing more damage, high morality (chance of a second action per unit per turn), better spells like for example expert level buffs / debuffs effect all units instead of just one (Devastating effect and I underestimated this by far) or higher moving range up to special skills like diplomacy that lets you recruit units sometimes instead of fighting them (Not available in battles with enemy commanders). There is more to it but I stop here. New additions to the game are a ninth stronghold in form of the Conflux. These have elemental units and I want to point out that there are a lot of units immune to magic or certain elemental spells (Might be useful in a certain campaign. Hint what is the game named after?). There are now neutral units (not aligned to strongholds) from the absolute weak Peasants up to the incredible strong Azure Dragons. Also new heroes are added with 2 new classes. Gameplay wise there are now quest towers that prevents you from passing until you fulfill the requirements, six new campaigns and a lot for the map generator. What won me over were the campaigns. “Armageddons Blade” was a great experience that made good use of the new additions. It is challenging, tells an immersive story and is a long campaign. “Dragon Slayer” follows the wizard Dracon on a quest of self discovery. It is quite challenging (Most difficult campaign in HoMMM 3) as your resources or better said number of units are limited and I am proud to finish it as there are some harsh battles. Also the ending is excellent but in a way that others will see it as disappointment (I see t as valuable lesson for life but even I who liked it can see this possibility). “Festival of Life” follows the barbarian Kilgor on his quest to challenge the ruler for kingship in the so called event. Has nice insights into the culture of these lands and an entertaining story. “Dragons Blood” is the story of female overlord Mutare on her way to become supreme and unchallenged (evil) ruler. It was enjoyable to play her scenario as she is bend on becoming an unstoppable force. I normally don't like being the bad guy but here I could not resist. “Playing with Fire” stars Adrienne who is a witch talented in fire magic. She fights an invasion while facing the fact that she is a fire magic user in the lands of earth and water. A good idea to show the struggles of being a hero but also being feared of being different. The final unlockable scenario I wont spoil ties up a loose end of the main game. While non of the other scenarios in the main game or other expansion were bad these were more immersive, challenged me and tell good stories. The graphics were good and aged well but there are a few minor missteps like for example the new heroes portraits look a bit out of style. Soundtrack is still good. Overall this improves the main game and has the best campaigns. I recommend this if you like the original game. Small warning it is more challenging and some have given up on some campaigns.

A very good DLC with addition of new castle and new campaign. Same outstanding game as an original.
