Fallout
The mood is right, the graphics good, and the plot compelling. I found the tactical combat system refreshingly intelligent, and the multitude of ways you can approach the game from a stats point of make a wide variety of styles possible in the game.

This sequel to an all-time classic is one of the standout RPGs for the 1990s. [Jan 1998, p.221]
Fallout's detailed graphics, compelling plot, and intuitive gameplay should deservedly broaden its appeal beyond the hard-core role-playing game audience. Put simply, Fallout may be the best role-playing game to be released in years.

The game series welcomes you with this ridiculously atmospheric intro, consisting of a brief history lesson explaining why the world finds itself where it does, featuring a tune familiar and so dear to my heart. I just find it weird that the game literally opens with the intro video — before the main menu and everything — so you have to skip it every time you launch the game. I mean, wouldn't it make more sense to place the introductory video, which you really only need to watch once, right before the player embarks on his journey for the first time and nowhere else? You pretty quickly get reminded that back in the day people couldn't care less about tutorials. You're just thrown out of the Vault like a filthy cat. The first hour was spent figuring out how the clunkiest fight system I had ever seen works. Never in my life had I thought I'd have so much trouble dealing with some rats. Obviously, I should not complain, as rats were as tough of an opponent as I could've possibly handled, because when I was unlucky enough to stumble upon Mole Rats, let alone Radscorpions, the game was over (literally). At least the familiar sound effects gave me a certain kind of comfort. And that was me already having switched to the easiest difficulty — something I had never done before in my "gamer career". Maybe I should read that long-ass manual that comes with the game after all... "It's not the destination, it's the journey" I would've liked to say that the game didn't age, it still holds up, and so on, but that would've been a lie. Fallout 1 definitely has a certain charm to it, and more often than not, I found it difficult to put it away, but at the end of the day, it's a game from another decad... no, from another centur... no, from another millennium! And the game reminds you of that every time you interact with it. It was a new experience for me — I had never played such an old game (well, at least a PC game). I'm glad my playing time was limited by the game itself: it allowed me to continue my crusade through my *checks notes* humongous backlog while sticking to the "have to finish a game before moving on" principle. The words matter here. If I used the "complete" or "beat" words, then it would've been a different story, and I would've no choice but to load one of my early saves, giving it another shot at finding that damn water chip. It's refreshing to see a game that doesn't wait for the player — one moment it just comes to a logical end, and it doesn't care if you still have **** to do. All other games let you play them until you beat them — sooner or later the final objective will be completed. In Fallout 1, success is not guaranteed. It actually reminds me of something... what it's called again... ah, I got it — real life. Just like in real life, one day the "mission" will be over, and no one will ask you if you've done everything you set out to do.

Fallout n'est pas un jeu qui se raconte, c'est un jeu qui se **** l'on ne s'arrête pas à ses graphismes un poil austères, on prend en pleine poire ses effarantes qualités.Immersif, drôle, noir, cynique, violent, fichtrement long, **** monument du jeu PC.

The story is so well developed in this game you'll wonder why you've been playing mindless shooting games like "Quake." When you start the game you'll be treated to with one of the most chilling, well-written introductions a game has ever been blessed with.

What a game, man. Before heading into, I knew it was classic and it has an odd time limit. After finishing the game, finding a water chip doesn’t bother me that much because 150 days is just enough for getting it, even if you’re playing the game so badly. Also, for once, you can supply your vault through water merchants in Hub and add 100 days more to countdown. Now I can say this wasn’t most impressive thing in the game. There is only 3 obligatory mission in the game. Overseer wants 3 thing, mainly. To reach the ending, really, just you need to go to Necropolis, Mariposa Military Base and the Cathedral, of course. This is amazing because most of the RPG games entails you, to do missions. To form the bond with story. I’m not saying it is a bad method, but why someone needs to drag me into some other things to reach the goal. If they were optional and I liked the world, I would do that anyway. This is the case for Fallout, definitely. There are 12 locations in the game and devs tried to connect everyplace through side quests. And results of some of those will have an affect on main quest arc. There is no level scaling in the game, also. Let’s say with some aid of Super Mutants, you can reach Military Base, and Lieutenant. To see, how hard the challenge will be. Yeah, in some point, I escaped the outside of Base, and hoped that Guard will miss. Of course, the game is chance based but I’m sure, you don’t want to get into a fight with nearly 0 chance of winning. And lastly, I love the evils in the game, both Lieutenant and Master. Especially when you heard the story of Master from Harold. I feel bad for him. You can terminate him with argument but it was pretty rough on him. That disclosure was painful to watch. So I’ve decided to activate the nuke in the Cathedral with Lieutenant’s Key after eliminating him. Damn. Sorry Master, once again.

This top-down RPG is without a doubt the best PC RPG we have played in years. That's not an exaggeration. Years. I can't think of another game that comes even close to Fallout's excellent character generation and skill system, great story, and classy delivery.

The game play is smooth, using action points for movement and combat and the inventory system is easily managed. Fallout has one of the best character development systems of any computerized role-playing game and the graphics and story make for an excellent gaming experience.

It is vastly enjoyable. It consistently seduces with its vitality, its muscular flex, its postapocalyptic élan, its vivid, hyperreal environment.

A decent RPG where you can indeed actually advance your character and choose one of many paths through the story.

Timeless classic. Isometric RPG that was basically essential to start the whole genre.

Really enjoyed my short time going through this one, kind of remarkable how much of the gameplay and atmosphere carried over to the later Bethesda entries. Yes, its hard to keep track of quests and tasks and the combat encounters vary from incredibly ez to literally impossible with no good middle ground. But the setting and characters are still fun enough that I enjoyed my time.

Miss, miss, miss, miss, miss, miss and **** MISS! This game would be fun if my character wouldn't miss every single shot! It just makes every encounter very boring and of course enemies do critical SHOT wow! TRICK SHOT OOOOO! shots to me so just because of that I give this game 5/10. Bad game.

This has aged poorly in my view. Poor graphics aside due to the age, the story, dialog and role-play aspects are super-thin, and combat and exploration is cumbersome and boring. I only played until I reached the Hub, then I gave up. I didn't have a single memorable moment so far. The best aspect of the game is the atmospheric music, which must have been groundbreaking at the time. Apart from that, it lacks all the character and atmosphere of the later games. I didn't feel like I was in a post-apocalyptic dystopian world. More like the deserted landscape of the American West.
