I am quite disappointed by the fact that the game felt so unpolished and crashed so much.

If you are willing to overlook the bugs in the game, you will appreciate a space-action title like Tarr Chronicles – at least a little. If it moves, don’t ask and shoot. The missions do not surprise, also the story sucks.

When I first heard about this game, it sounded like a cut down version of Freelancer or Starlancer two of my favorite space shooters of all time in the gameplay department. While it was a good attempt to give the genre another go, this is one game that did not even give it a good old try to re-invigorate this dead genre.

There's no doubt about it; Dark Horizon is flawed. From flat-out errors to those moments where you can't help but wonder what, exactly, the developer was thinking, the game feels almost unfinished.

In the end, it turns out a lot like space: majestic and somber, but even emptier than air.

It’s just average. It doesn’t push the bar in any way with nothing revolutionary appearing in it. The best way to describe this game is safe.

So, Dark Horizon isn’t a horrible game. It’s just not a very good one, either. While nothing about it is particularly offensive, it still absolutely fails to generate any interest in a genre that, in most people’s eyes, stagnated a long time ago.

The sequel to Tarr Chronicles, Dark Horizon immerses itself in the unusual space mythology established in Tarr, and, with a handful is new features, is the better game but is essentially, more of the same.

The core loop in Dark Horizon (2008) feels rushed, prioritizing feature quantity over refined, bug-free execution. Compounding these mechanical hurdles is undeniable technical stagnation, where late-game processing times crawl to a frustrating crawl. Furthermore, computer-controlled opponents struggle to manage complex supply chains, frequently stranding critical assets without justification. To make matters worse, essential quality-of-life adjustments and foundational systems are aggressively paywalled behind expensive DLC packages. In its current state, Dark Horizon (2008) feels more like an unfinished simulation sandbox than a polished, rewarding strategy experience.
