Command & Conquer: Renegade

Play Magazine
While Westwood got the big things right, they could have done better on the little things that us gardcore gamers pick up on. [May 2002, p.57]
Imagine a long-time Trekkie's glee at being given the opportunity to walk around the original 60s set with the cast; Renegade is the virtual equivalent for the C&C fan.
If there is a drawback to the game it lies in that the AI is not overly strong. Considering that the enemy is engaged in a firefight of enormous proportions, running straight into a gun, or standing immobile with backs to the approaching shooter seems a little ridiculous.

Remember the days when it was released. We were hyped. Did not pay attention to details. Tried to play multiplayer. Good old days. Pros.: Story. Homage to the first C&C. Dialogues and characters. Dynamic and variable. Music. Cons.: From modern standards - very poor level design - not many items, rooms look ridiculous. Some small bugs related to the script activation.

Just text (crutch) to save the game to the list. Such things. Maybe I'll do a review later.

Only two other games, "Half-life" and "Deus Ex" have given me the same Buzz as completing Renegade has.

As the novelty wears off the C&C setting begins to dissolve, you're left with a decent FPS that quickly becomes as easy to put down as it was to pick up. [Apr 2002, p.84]

Absolutely, mindblowingly amazing. People generally complain about bugs. there aren't any bugs which make the game in any way unplayable, so they are fine. Single player? The AI is absolutely stupid, i admit. But this game's single player is probably one of my most enjoyable single player experiences. It deserves a lot more praise than the call of duty campaigns in the least. Multiplayer? Sheer epicness. It's like you're playing out an rts game from an fps perspective, and you can be any unit you want amongst the usual 30+ people in the servers. It requires a lot of teamwork, and the satisfaction you get when you finally blow up the enemy base is exhilarating. I wish there had been a renegade 2! was really looking forward to it! Also, the multiplayer community if still very active, for anyone who's wondering :)

The detail and immersion of these environments is such a pleasant surprise that it may take even a seasoned player a while to realize that the single-player missions are rather linear, and that the artificial intelligence of the enemy troops is a little...lacking.

ActionTrip
Fix the physics on the engine, scale it for lower-end machines, tweak the netcode on the multiplayer side and overhaul the AI and Renegade is the game that every C&C fan wants it to be. It's a good game, just not a great one.

Armchair Empire
All round AI is lacking. Enemy AI is laughable at times – walking toward you backwards or standing still while you spray them with the flamethrower.

The epitomy of a game whose long development period has caused it to be already dated on release. It's at once very new and very old.

The AI is about...wait...did I just call it artificial intelligence?! What I meant to say was artificial silliness just cracked me up on a couple of occasions, as I've witnessed NOD soldiers walk towards me with their backs turned, while I just kept filling their butts full of chain gun lead.

Single player was okay, I played through it a few times; however, the multiplayer is amazing, if you get a good team together the strategy the game requires to win just makes it so much fun. Even being on the losing team is fun as you struggle to defend your base. If that's not for you, Renegade was easily modifiable and you could blow all sorts of time into changing the game play. In all I love the game, and I still play it even now.

It is fun to see the battleground from the point of view of the GDI soldier. Although the single-player campaign is sometimes too easy it is still very enjoyable. Multiplayer was great at the time, not sure what it is like now.

SummaryFor the first time, experience the Command and Conquer universe up close and personal as you fight it out on the ground among the structures, vehicles and weapons made famous in the original C&C. You assume the role of Havoc, elite GDI commando who fights and explores from a first or third-person viewpoint. Battling through exotic indoor... Read More
