Big Hops did something interesting today: it charmed a player who is terrible at platformers into liking it. The gameplay offers plenty of variety with its different mechanics, and I’ve found the story and characters charming. It isn’t perfect, of course, with some irritating camera bugs, a general lack of customization for game settings, and some very frustrating moments at times. None of these are dealbreakers, however, and I can heartily recommend Big Hops as a solid game in its genre.

Big Hops is the palete cleanser you need going into 2026 - with immpressive platforming inspired by Mario, a Veggie system that rewards creative thinking and adorable graphics and humor - This is the game you should kick off the year with.

Big Hops is an ambitious indie 3D platformer that I played mostly because I was bored, but I ended up really liking. It’s protagonist is the aptly named Little Hop, a backpack-wearing frog with dreams of exploring the world beyond the little valley where he lives with his family. One day, Hop gets lost while on a picknick with his sister, and promptly gets abducted by an extradimensional imp with the suspicious name of Diss. Diss is exceptionally snarky, and refuses to bring Hop back home unless he collects a lot of equally suspiciously named Dark Drips. What are Dark Drips and what does he need them for? Who knows! Hop, realising that he really misses his family, goes on a quest to get back home, and meets several interesting characters on the way. First of all, I’d like to start at the movement. Movement is the core of any platformer, and the tongue-based swinging and leaping of Big Hops is simply delightful. I never imagined myself attaching my tongue to a cliff wall and swinging away with it, yet here I am, and I enjoyed it. I’d also like to comment on the freedom of the world. Aside from the untrustworthy Dark Drips, there are a lot of interesting collectibles to be found. An example are the bugs, which Hop studies and then eats, giving him nice boosts. There are also seeds, which are actually used in the platforming. Each seed grows a different plant, with different effects to help you get to new places. It does disappoint me a little that the game can get a little railroady in certain sections, such as the minecart section. This doesn’t happen often, but it’s annoying when it does, because the rest of the game embraces freedom in such a good way. The story also isn’t much to speak off, but tbh nobody comes into a platformer about frogs with the expectation **** narrative. Overall, Big Hops is a simple but deceptively fun game. It’s not a grand new idea, but it executes its ideas very well, and I recommend it if you like 3D platformers.

Big Hops is a really pleasant platformer that gives players many ways to approach its challenges. It’s versatile, and the controls feel pitch perfect. The nature of it also means we get to see some pretty varied biomes. Some worlds do feel more interesting than others, sadly, and and the story could be stronger. Still, it’s quite enjoyable and worth someone’s time if they enjoyed titles like Yooka Laylee and Super Mario 64.

BIG HOPS succeeds because of the developers’ understanding of momentum, accessibility, and expression through movement: its systems constantly invite wacky experimentation with generous restarts, rather than punishing the player for failing, all of which reinforces a core philosophy of playful improvisation.

Big Hops is an enjoyable platformer that nails level design, creativity, and a sense of momentum.

Big Hops has plenty to celebrate and reasons to check it out, but it is also worth remembering that it's quite the traditional and familiar 3D platformer in many respects.

Big Hops features excellently designed core systems, but ultimately doesn’t do enough to truly motivate players to keep going. If you’re here purely for flashy 3D platforming, you’ll have a great time hopping through cozy, colorful environments, but those seeking tight level design, a compelling narrative, or long-term depth will hear a less pleasant croak. In the end, it’s a very typical debut 3D platformer, brimming with potential and clear learning moments for Luckshot Games.

Great game, quite surprised by how much I enjoyed my time with it, given how divisive apparently Big Hops is among the critics. Gameplay wise it has this Nintendo flavor of inventiveness and feel good mechanics. Maybe not as polished as a Mario game, but works very well.Particularly I enjoyed the more confined areas and fast paced action sequences, than the more open sets with heavy collecthaton exploration, but never felt bored in my almost 12 hours playthrough. Also, nice visual esthetics and pleasant soundtrack. However, despite the likeable protagonist, I found the plot not very engaging and kinda pointless. Also, this is infested with bugs. No kidding, it crashed more than 10 times and about half of that at the very last minutes. Thankfully I didn't loose substantial progress, but I was really worried about not been able to beat it. Very problematic performance too, especially at the end where It felt like the game was about to explode anytime due to how it was struggling to sustain a mere 15 fps.I definitely recommend Big Hops to people who enjoy 3D platformers , but I'd say to wait a bit longer to play, until the developers fix the several bugs and inconsistent performance.

A more than adequate platformer that has some real high with its different mechanics, particularly when it goes heavy on the physics. I wish there had been more challenge levels and less dialogue.

This is complicated. The game itself is charming, characters have good lines and the game mechanics are reminding of games like Mario Odyssey. There was such a big potential, seriously. Why such bad rating then? -The different worlds were just too long and tedious. More and smaller/shorter worlds would have been so much better. Especially the last world just didn't end and lost the charm of the first and (first part of the) second world.
- Very very buggy. The first few hours work like a charm, but then you can see how everything falls apart. Constant framerate drops included. Sometimes not playable. - Story is interesting, but ends up to be too predictable and streamlined. The ending was particularly weird and very... rushed. If that is the right word to use...
- Would have loved to get more options to use in-game money -- the options are very scarce. There is also no actual reason for having hearts (except for the endgame part)
- Badges are mostly too irrelevant
- more collectibles; I see almost no reason to revisit old worlds even though they are charming enough that I want to return but find myself not knowing what for. Overall disappointing because especially the first few hours really made me wanna love this game so much. It ended up being only a drag trying to reach the end which then wasn't even satisfying. But I cannot wait for a potential second game. I am sure it will be much better!
