For a long time, Avatar has felt like a poisoned chalice when it comes to video games, but Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game proves that it’s been a perfect fit all along. Even with it being on the smaller side, the fantastic and very Avatar combat mechanics, gorgeous style, and love for the series make it a fighter that’s going to be very hard to top.

Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game overcomes its initial intimidation to reveal a fighter that’s expressive, exhilarating, and that genuinely rewards improvement.

It's finally happened. After all these years, we finally have a good Avatar video game, and a darn good one at that. You can tell the developers have a real love for this franchise and give it way more respect than Paramount is giving it, that's for sure. Avatar Legends is a very fun fighting game that will be easy to learn for casuals and has a high enough skill ceiling that I can see the pro fighting game community going crazy for.

Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game is a title aimed at fans of the franchise and fighting games. With a fluid combat system that rewards mobility, as well as game modes that strike a balance between competitive and single-player experiences, it stands out as a robust gaming experience. Although the story is clearly just a pretext, it might be one that fans appreciate.

Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game is a beautiful, fun, and surprisingly competent fighting game for a project based on such a popular franchise. Its combat system manages to establish a unique identity, while the roster—though small—offers highly varied playstyles and a content package that exceeds expectations for a debut title.

Avatar Legends captures the fast-paced, frenetic battles of its source material and translates this into a deep, immersive fighter that requires skill and precision to unlock its full potential. Each character brims with personality, which bleeds into their moveset, making each contest feel unique. Although the roster is limited and newcomers may struggle to get to grips with the higher-level combos, it’s a rewarding fighter that captures the spirit of the series, rewarding persistence with some truly spectacular battles.

Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game is the closest the franchise has come to capturing the magic of the animated series in video game form.

Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game proves that the bending elements and fighting games were made for each other, delivering refined combat that respects both the source material and the high expectations of genre enthusiasts. However, the title stumbles on its own limitations, presenting a merely perfunctory narrative, a modest core cast, inconsistent art style, and single-player content that loses momentum too quickly. Nevertheless, there is an excellent foundation here, and it remains to be seen whether future content will allow the game to reach its true Avatar State.

Ultimately, a lackluster story mode and a lean launch roster can’t hold back what is easily one of the most mechanically refreshing 1v1 fighters I’ve played recently. Whether you're an FGC veteran looking for a gameplay-first experience or a casual Avatar fan just wanting to press some buttons and watch your favorite characters pull off incredible sequences in a gorgeously animated 2D fighter, Avatar Legends delivers where it matters most.

Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game is like a dream for both fans of the franchise and fighting games. With good graphics, a complex gameplay and fan service, the game is a good addition to the genre, but it doesn't serve as an entry point to this fighting game universe - and considering how many Avatar fans haven't mastered this genre, that's a shame.
