It takes something special to stand out in the ever-growing auto-running platformer genre, but ATOMIK: RunGunJumpGun does so with aplomb, copious deaths and a healthy dash of that “just one more time” mentality that’ll keep you coming back for more. From its pulse-pounding post-apocalyptic world to its powerful soundtrack, the hours will melt away as you try and collect every last bauble or at the very least just try and make it to the goal unscathed. If brutal arcade-like experiences sound like your cup of tea, you can’t go wrong with ATOMIK: RunGunJumpGun.

Like so many games nowadays, Atomik: RunGunJumpGun is presented in a lovely pixel art style, but the biggest plus point is the soundtrack. It each level brilliantly, especially when you're wearing headphones. ATOMIK: RunGunJumpGun becomes very atmospheric when played this way. Which is a major pro as there's barely any story here and what is delivered via soundbite dialogue between stages feels a bit tacked on. What could be a relatively bland game truly excels on the Switch, and if you're a completist going for all the collectibles, you'll be here for a long time.

Overall, I had a really surprisingly fun time with ATOMIK: RunGunJumpGun. It has a good sense of difficulty and nailing everything was satisfying. Next to that, the grand sense of style is unmatched by most that I play in the genre. The big bummer is that it took only a few hours to fully complete the roughly 100 levels in the package. An endless mode would made me really happy, and would've made ATOMIK something I could return to. Still, what’s here is made with care, making for an enjoyable experience.

Clever levels, obstacles and enemies, all polished with visual splendour and pumping music, ATOMIK: RunGunJumpGun is designed to a tee. And if you’re after every Atomix, it’s a hefty challenge that’ll take you some time. You will feel physically and mentally exhausted, but you will not stop playing. We promise you this – your pulse will be raised.

As far as auto-runners go, ATOMIK: RunGunJumpGun is solid. It does not really do anything to win over anyone to partake in games like this but will be worth having around when there are a lot of guests around and can be a DJ understudy for the soundtrack alone. Maybe if the art was repurposed for a more interesting genre, ATOMIK could have been a real winner. Only fans of auto-runners need apply - for everyone else, just go and buy the soundtrack instead.

Atomik: RunGunJumpGun features a mind-blowing presentation and challenging gameplay that's easy to learn. However, that gameplay doesn't really go anywhere exciting and the overall experience ends up feeling quite lacking as a result.
