Hearts of Iron IV1
Sep 26, 2026
Hearts of Iron IV is a perfect example of how a genuinely great concept can be buried under years of questionable design decisions, endless paid content, inconsistent quality control, and increasingly poor community management. After ten years of development, expansions, reworks, patches and an enormous catalogue of paid DLC, many of the game's fundamental problems are still painfully obvious. The AI frequently struggles with frontlines, supply, naval invasions, production and basic strategic decision-making. Your greatest enemy is often not another country, but watching your own generals rearrange divisions in ways no sane commander would ever **** game presents itself as an incredibly deep World War II grand strategy experience, but much of that "depth" comes from stacking more and more systems on top of old systems rather than making the underlying game genuinely smarter. Naval warfare can feel needlessly opaque, air warfare often becomes an exercise in numbers and efficiency modifiers, diplomacy remains remarkably shallow for a grand strategy game, and many national focus trees increasingly resemble scripted amusement parks rather than believable alternate history. Then there is the DLC model. What started as an interesting strategy game has gradually become a maze of expansions, country packs, feature reworks and mechanics distributed across years of additional purchases. New content arrives while older systems continue to show their age. Instead of feeling like a polished ten-year-old strategy game, HOI4 often feels like a collection of different design eras stitched together and expected to somehow function as one coherent product.Balance is another recurring problem. Some countries receive enormous, elaborate focus trees filled with branching paths and special mechanics, while others feel comparatively ancient. Historical plausibility varies wildly depending on which part of the game you are playing. Complexity is added constantly, but complexity and depth are not the same thing.Performance also deteriorates dramatically as campaigns progress. For a game where a single campaign can last many hours, watching the simulation slow down precisely when the world war becomes largest and most interesting is hardly a minor issue.Mods deserve enormous credit for extending HOI4's lifespan. In fact, the modding community has produced some of the most creative, ambitious and enjoyable experiences available in the game. But when community projects repeatedly demonstrate how much can be done with the underlying framework, it also makes the weaknesses of the official content considerably harder to **** finally, the recent controversy surrounding moderation on the game's official community server was the final straw for me. The game's director acknowledged that the relevant rule "has not been enforced consistently." The follow-up statement went further: "This should have been prevented, and we failed," while also conceding that responsibility for the official server "rests with us." Yet there was still no direct public apology and no clear retraction of the historical claim at the center of the controversy. The response instead focused primarily on rewriting the server rules and moving **** a studio whose games revolve around history, ideology, politics and controversial historical subjects, that is particularly disappointing. If you operate official communities around games like this, consistency, historical awareness, accountability and competent moderation should be the bare minimum.I used to see HOI4 as a flawed but remarkable grand strategy **** I see an aging platform kept alive by DLC, mods and an extremely dedicated player base, while many fundamental problems remain unresolved year after year.Whatever good strategy game still exists underneath all of this is no longer enough to outweigh what HOI4 has become. After a decade, I simply do not think this product, or the way it has been managed, deserves anything close to the reputation it still carries.

Trial version up to level 70!!! It's very nice to gain skill with the quest, Story is amazing Crafting is nice. The length of the quest is sometimes boring. Music and cinematics are good.
