Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave1

So I played through the intro, picked Dietrich, reached the main city and now I'm running around on the map beating random beasts in featureless open fields. Now I'm starting to wonder: "Is that it...?"• So far, the approach in combat is always the same: 1. Walk into enemy space in a way that only 1 or 2 will attack me back during enemy phase and kill enemy either in one hit (Dietrich) or soften them up with a ranged attack before killing them in one hit (everyone else). 2. Use Vulnerary/heal as needed. 3. Repeat until the scenario ends...• In dungeons, I spam the same link attack, run through linear corridors and smash crystals - until the dungeon just kinda ends...• In town, I can't choose who to recruit, because the characters are all renown and gift-item-gated - so I end up recruiting whatever random people the game allows me to. Some have a quirk that sets them apart, but most are just indistinguishable from the rest, with something like "+10 to hit" as their only differentiator - so even if I had free choice who the recruit, it seems like it would barely matter.I gotta say, so far, the game is not scratchnig my "strategy game" itch - and it strangely seems like it isn't trying to either. There is not even a weapon triangle to take into account, so my choice of which unit I use to attack which enemy is usually **** older Fire Emblem games, you'd:• Use bridges, woods and forts strategically (the map actually mattered in a big way!)• Figure out how to reach a house on the other end of the battle map as a side-objective to get an awesome reward.• Make meaningful choices on unit upgrades and manage weapon durability.• Mange the XP gain of your units CONSTANTLY - trying to give XP to your best scaling units while trying to use your "Jagens" sparingly.• Look at the battle map and actually strategize - splitting up your units purposefully, using thiefs to open doors, using casters to teleport other crucial units to where they need to be, using flying units to cover impassable terrain, **** all of that just kinda gone in favor of a more casual/simplistic gameplay-loop?Is running along corridors and watching units auto-battle in barren fields just how the game is designed to be?In previous games of the seriies, I'd often stare at the map, pondering how to solve a situation, how to get that bonus objective without dying, or how to get the maximum XP for my "villager"-type unit out of an encounter. With Fortune's Weave, I've never had a moment like that before - even after playing for ~6-8 hours!Basically, what I'd like to know is this:• Is the game just holding your hand at the start - and later on you get to make actually meaningful decisions?• Or is the game just going for a very different kind of gameplay experience than previous titles - and what I've seen so far is just all there is?
