South Park: 27 Sermon on the 'Mount

This is probably the best South Park episode ever made. Haven't laughed that much in a long time! Being that Matt and Trey are both Republicans, I think its fair to say that both the party and its leader are in some serious trouble.

I loved season 1 for its compelling dystopian narrative and mystery. Season 2 is a glacially paced soap opera, detached from the story it was supposed to adapt and unworthy of the same title. I'm reading the book instead now; it is much better.

I got as far as halfway through the second episode before turning this off. 2 stars because the fight scene in the first minutes of episode 1 was good, even if the dialogue that preceded it was ridiculous. I'm watching the reviews for entertainment purposes, but have no further interest in watching this show. Star Wars is dead and Disney killed it. But we all knew that already. This is just the confirmation some of us needed so we could put it behind us for good.

Diverse and very "Netflix", but still overall a good show. The first 15 minutes of the first episode introduces the characters in a very unflattering way, particularly the "bar" scene, that can easily turn you off from watching the series if you've grown sensitive to the garbage being produced by Hollywood as of late. The early dialogue is cringe and the writers seem to struggle with the tried and true storytelling technique of "show, don't tell". Thankfully, this is improved in later episodes, and if you can slog through the first half of the first episode then you'll be rewarded with better storytelling. By the time I got to episode 5 I was enjoying the show quite a bit. It isn't without fault, and it does suffer from modern audience syndrome, but if you can get through that the show itself is relatively good. Some unimaginative CGI work detracts from the show a bit, but nothing story breaking. 6.5/10.

They sure don't look like "Smith's", do they. Very diverse though. It's a shame Amazon, Netflix, Paramount and Disney spend all their time making everything as absurdly diverse as possible, while forgetting that the only thing that matters is that it has a good story.

Fear the Walking Dead

This is a show that completely failed to live up to its parent show's reputation. It's a dull, boring, and poorly written series that wastes the potential of its premise and characters. The show has been plagued with inconsistent quality, weak villains, irrational characters, nonsensical plot twists, melodrama and cheap tricks. Fear the Walking Dead is a series that deserved to be cancelled in its second season, yet somehow made it to its eighth, losing 90% of its original audience in the process. For anyone interested in this show, be warned that it has nothing to offer but disappointment and frustration. The writers, directors and producers should be ashamed of themselves for being a part of this travesty, having proven themselves to be incompetent and clueless. All TV show watchers should be on the lookout for anything written by David Johnson-McGoldrick, Alex Delyle, Michael Alaimo, Samir Mehta, Nazrin Choudhury and Calaya Michelle Stallworth - the talentless hack writers behind the worst rated episodes of this dumpster fire and whose work should be avoided with extreme prejudice. Fear the Walking Dead is not just a bad spin-off, it's a bad show in general.

This show is awful. I have not read the books, nor did I know anything about the lore or the plot going in. I struggled to get through the first 3 or 4 episodes of the first season, then turned it off. There is nothing here; no likeable characters, no compelling story, no world building. What the show does offer are political messages, bad storytelling, and some CGI. There is nothing here worth investing your time into. It's just....awful.

Star Wars: Ahsoka

I don't know why there are two separate review sections on Metacritic for this show. There is "Ahsoka: Season One", and "Star Wars: Ahsoka". I've already posted this review on Ahsoka Season One, but I'll put it here as well for good measure. This series had a lot of potential. Ahsoka was a great character from the Clone Wars animated series, and Sabine, Hera, and to a slightly lesser extent Ezra were likeable characters from the Rebel series. Instead of sticking with a formula that already worked, Disney in their infinite wisdom decided to make Sabine - a character that already had an impressive arsenal of skills, none of which included force abilities - a "padawan", one of the most nonsensical story choices they could have possibly come up with. A runner up to that bit of bad fan fiction is the new Star Wars universe ability to survive being skewered with a lightsaber - something poor Qui Gon must be fuming about. Disney started the series with an assortment of plot contrivances and macguffins - another "map to a person" for those who watched (and eyerolled) at the "map to Skywalker" from the Force Awakens. It seems like they wanted to make Ahsoka more stoic and contemplative, but it comes through in the show as her simply being more one dimensional and boring. Her live action adaptation certainly lacks the acrobatic skills and fast movements of her animated counterpart, and instead fights more like a slow moving samurai than the swift footed former Jedi apprentice we've come to know. Everything about the New Republic reeks of incompetence; because of the abundance of bad writing in this show, I can't be certain if they were intended to come off that way or if the writers just don't know how to write competent characters - because they themselves are incompetent. The one highlight of the series is the villain, Baylun, who has at least been given somewhat of a backstory, and motivations beyond "bad guy" that make him an interesting character. Morgan Elzbeth, on the other hand, is another one dimensional villain. Seven episodes into the series, and despite having watched Rebels and Clone Wars in their entirety, I still don't really know what are behind her motivations, other than her "wanting to find Thrawn". We don't know why she wants to find Thrawn, because the show never elaborates on that. She has one, brooding look about her thoughout the show that never changes. Disney has tried to win over the fans with cameos of legacy characters in the story such as Anakin and C3P0, but their inclusion doesn't add anything to the plot. They appear to have been put there just for member berries. I want to like this show, I really do, because I like Ahsoka, I like Sabine, I liked Rebels and the Clone Wars, but if you can't write a compelling story - and Disney /can't/ write a compelling story anymore - it doesn't matter how much you like the characters because, as we see with Disney's Ahsoka, it still falls flat. I suppose you could call this another Lucas Star Wars character butchered by Disney - along with Kenobi, Lando, Luke, Han, and Leia. I don't count Sabine or Ezra, because they were Disney characters to begin with. So is the show terrible? No. It is watchable, but to enjoy it, you really have to make an effort to turn your brain off, because if you think about the plot too much, the whole story unravels very quickly.

The Continental: From the World of John Wick

Fun! If you liked the John Wick movies, the odds are pretty good you're going to like this as well. It takes the show a while to find its momentum, but once it does it feels very much like something right out of the same universe. It's not woke, which was a relief. Let's hope they maintain that for the last two episodes as well. I don't know what the critics' problem with this show is, but in "current day", their opinions rarely reflect reality and tend to more reflect the amount of money stuffed in envelopes or access granted to them. I'd give this show a 7.5/10 for the first episode. I base that on my enjoyment of it, rather than on any ESG scoring mechanism or palm greasing - which is what I'd guess those "professional critics" are basing their extremely laughable 54 on. Give it a shot, you just might like it.

While somewhat campy, I enjoyed season 1 of this show. But I couldn't even manage to get through the first episode of season 2. Many shows - most even - have suffered lately from really bad, really poorly thought out writing, inconsistencies, poor world building, bad dialogue, irrational character behaviour, plot holes and contrivances. But this really took the cake. There are no redeeming qualities to this show in season 2. The writing was so awful that I couldn't even finish a single episode. I turned it off and never went back. If you were considering giving this show a try - don't bother. It's just bad and that's all there is to it. We all know that reviews by so-called "critics" these days are bought and paid for - whether with cash or perks. It should be telling, therefore, that the *one and only* review available on metacritic for this show's second season gives it a 67. And you know for a fact that's the best review they could get, which is why it's the only one there.

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon

It starts out well enough. The first 45 minutes had me about as engaged as I had been in a Walking Dead show since the early seasons of the original, aside from some silliness early in the opening scenes. Unfortunately, however, the show quickly reverts to using cheap plot contrivances, bad dialogue and irrational character behaviour. The "explanation" for Daryl somehow ending up on another continent is approximately as absurd as the first episode's ending sequence featuring an oceanliner that is apparently still in service. I guess the writers forgot to explain to us somewhere along the line how diesel fuel is still being produced 14 years post-apocalypse. Essentially, it's just like every other Walking Dead show. To its credit, it doesn't appear to be overly woke - though the main villain introduced at the end of the episode has me questioning that assertion. Overall it's not terrible, but if you were already sick of the bad writing in the later seasons of the original show, the Fear spinoff, or the World Beyond spinoff, you're probably not going to like this one much either, because it seems to be written in much the same way. 5/10.
