Elite: Dangerous10

Edit: After playing an inordinate number of hours since release this might be my favorite game ever. Including tabletop gaming. The depth is staggering. Only playing solo, tempted to try OL. Phenomenal game if you invest in learning how to play. Reminds me of learning Magic: The Gathering from the 4th Edition rulebook; Only a semi-obsessive personality will do it. May be the most profound gaming experience of my life, mechanically and philosophically including my stacks of table tops. You never leave your space craft, there is no story. Just humanity spiraling out into the galaxy, posting wish lists of executions and lawbreaking. It is brilliant. While flying through the vast, I find myself pining, “Humanity is so close to understanding its true purpose.” Though I’m not certain how many will leave the cusp: Too busy executing one another and passing laws, I suppose.

Beautiful imagery if a bit slow gameplay. Some control issues with the boats made getting around difficult. Might appeal to people looking for a more zen experience.

I am a casual fighter gamer, and picky about games. The tutorial has been very helpful. Graphics are fantastic, controls are great. Although I never could get the hang of several fighting games (including Mortal Kombat), Injustice collects the best aspects of the genre, and definitely aims for a wide audience. One minor nit: I wish the tutorial would demo the moves so you'd know what it looked like when correctly executed (ala Soul Calibur).

As a huge Skyrim fan, in many ways KoA is better. Everything is less grindy, combat is more fun, difficulty balance is better, inventory is more fluid (go "junk" category), alchemy is much less random guessing. The high fantasy graphics are gorgeous, and the setting is highest fantasy. On the other side, it feels more sterile and plasticy than Skyrim, which will bother some people more than others. Treasure is a bit monty hall; You'll collect so much stuff, it loses the excitement of discovery. The camera angles sometimes feel off, as if it focuses too downward. Gnomes are a poor aesthetic choice, IMO.

It takes some effort to figure out how to make it work, but well worth it. Having a blast with this. Good learning tool for kids too. Visuals are old skool, but its easy enough to add your own content to the graphics files.

The Amazing Spider-Man5

This game has the dubious honor of being the first Xbox 360 title to make me motion sick. My 10-year old as well. Well, I did feel ill after Grand Theft Auto tavern visits, but those were supposed to do that. Anyway, I suspect it is slurry graphics. Never had this happen on previous Spiderman games... Combat is pretty stark, but web rush is a cool idea.

So happy to have an end step and pick which lands I tap. This is a great intro to the game or way for vets to get a quick MTG fix. IMO it's a lot of fun for the price.

Never played MC before, and I can see potential here. But MC is tedious. The crafting menu is a shopping list that requires a ton of digging or chopping. Tools wearing out feels like game padding (compare to Skyrim or Monsterhunter's engaging crafting.) Even hunting is dull. The graphics are crappy, and I'm not sure why they should be. I love the lego-aspect, but pretty visuals and fun tasks would make the game far better.

This game was made with obvious passion. I've never had so much fun sneaking and poking about a world. I don't think it would be possible to make the game better with the current technology.

Gameplay feels more fluid. Costumes no longer alter combat, which allows you more freedom in character creation. Single player mode acknowledges that the tower challenges and storyline were always just arcade mode anyway: Pretty much arcade is the single player experience. The storyline mode now is restricted to a few characters and adds marginal art to the blank text of SCIV. At last, a ABK button translator chart accompanies the move list. There is less T&A in this version.

I am enjoying this game, but the complaints do have merit. Fun but dumb. There's not a lot of depth to the strategy... Even simple stuff like flanking bonuses are absent. The designers should play some table top minis. Serious glitches exist. Example: Level 2 went unsolvable because of a rigid cut scene schedule. Music is mediocre, graphics are fine but not ideal. EDIT: I am taking this down a point after the latest patch did not fix a host of serious problems.

You will be hard-pressed to find a better game for kid's. Cute, fun and gets them some exercise. It won't replace playing outside, but on a cold rainy day, it sure beats tapping thumbs on a controller.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword10
Dec 13, 2011
My favorite Zelda since Link to the Past. Possibly even better because it is challenging but not frustrating. Motion Plus adds to the gameplay, and rewards thoughtful swordplay over random bashing; For instance, to kill a 3-headed snake you have to hit all the heads at once, requiring timing and angle.

This is very old school RPG'ing. Reminded me of the original Fallout. Lotsa text, no zooming graphics, looping atmospheric sounds. I would have eaten this title up 20 years ago, and maybe if I had the free time I did in my youth, I would have been able to invest more interest into it. It's a game that storyline buffs will dig, but as more of a puzzle/strategy gamer, this just wasn't my cup of tea.

This is a solid little shooter on rails. Maybe I'm old school, but it reminded me of fun old arcade shooters like House of the Dead. (I think that was the name of the zombie shooter I played when I was 16.) Anyway, for a budget title this has nice graphics. The cut scenes aren't thrilling or as well done as Martian Panic (another Zoo game I bought at the same time). But for $20, I got a nice periphal and a really fun game.

Amazing puzzler. Discover your own solution. Completing a level is a challenge, perfecting your designs for speed and efficiency adds **** tutorial instructions are a bear, but with a bit of experimentation and rereading, it makes sense. Stick with it and you will love it. I haven't read a wink of the story. NOTE: You can delete entire areas if you click drag a selection box and press delete. (Since Mortlach mentioned this as a flaw, I wanted to clarify you can erase entire boards easily.)

UPDATE: New save feature lets you savemid-level. MUCH less annoying. Good call. Charming graphics and music. It's a neat idea for a game, but quickly becomes a tedious and repetitious exercise. Perhaps my wife and I are missing an obvious strategy, but we have to make several trips transporting 30 of the 150 bugs at a time. It feels more like a chore than a puzzle.

I like the music, humor and graphics. The setting is beautiful, but as a chronically benevolent sim player, I found some aspects of being a dictator unsettling. The tutorial is very bare bones. A solid title, but probably more appealing to people who like to be the bad guy.

Universe Sandbox7

This isn't a game as much as a simulation. This title has a challenge in scale; Zooming out on a solar system will quickly reduce celestial objects into invisibilty. It's a cool way to get a sense of the largeness of space. The UI is really well put together given the giant subject matter... It isn't hard to find one of the 60 moons of Jupiter in the sprawling work area. I'm not sure how much I will play it. It's fun tossing a red giant on top of Pluto and watching everything hurtle out of orbit, but where does one go from there? I cannot knowledgably assess the accuracy of the physics; I'll leave that to the astrophysicists. Regardless, I think there is some solid educational value to this title.

Worms 2: Armageddon8
Jan 20, 2011
It's a worms game. Not much different from Armageddon. Weapons are more balanced, so you use more of your arsenal than in previous installments. For instance, homing missiles aren't as accurate, grenades are more accurate, grenades do less damage than dynamite, etc. There's a definite tool for different circumstances. Physics are a little more casual-friendly: Grenades don't roll as far and such. I play locally only, but me and my kids aged 5 & 8 have a blast with it. The landscape editor isn't exactly robust, but it's easy to use and fun to tinker with.

Middling on all counts. Mediocre graphics, dull gameplay, the text to humor ratio is way long on text for the mild chuckles. In short, jpanic is correct on all counts. I don't blush a bit at RPG ladies, but dude, it isn't the skin, it's the AGE of the "maidens" that makes you feel shame. I ended up getting bored and deleting the game.

Not as good as the original. The short y-axis is silly, and the modern health recovery system takes away from the experience. Cowering behind crates while you heal just doesn't feel like Bond.

Sid Meier's Civilization V10

So many annoying things have been streamlined without dumbing the game down. No more counting out 2 tiles away from your city, your boundaries are more fluid. Wonder limits appear to be tossed out, which was an annoying strategy-lite factor to track in IV . (I noticed lots of well-placed streamlining... I'm sure I'm forgetting to mention some.) I cannot understate how much better combat is in V. Ranged combat, no stacks, hexes, all for the better. Frigates can kill stuff on land. Game balance seems better so far. Last night I tried a theologically-based "happy citizens" approach that seemed to pretty successful, though that was on Chieftain setting. The communication of why things happen isn't so esoteric "It's too crowded!!!!" comments are now clearly quantified. Civic options are a bit more fleshed out as "policies". They follow a more formal tree, but have relevance throughout the game. AI is cool too. During one war I was winning, my AI opponent offered a great peace deal. Unfortunately he whisked in a defensive pact. Silly me, I didn't think about it until he started killing one of my city state allies and quipped, "I'm beating up on your buddy. What you gonna do about it?" It's like any later edition ****: Modern game design is simply more sophisticated nowadays. Some folks will dislike the differences, but in the case of Civ V, I like what they did to it.
