Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse4

Everything is painfully average about this movie other than the art style and the villain's weaponization of multiverses. The plot ****, the dialogue ****, it's such a waste of time.

This superhero movie was very different and had an intelligent motivation for the villain and Venom, which I love. The many different parts of the movie are all entertaining and the diversity of what each part contains, creates a good mixture for a movie experience. My brother didn't like it because he thought the beginning was too slow and long, but I thought it was all part **** plot and I liked everything except for the relationship scenes.

Just a solid ass movie. Jon Hamm doing that thing again where he makes a great movie and it's too good for everyone to go see.

It's just hilarious. Lots of situation comedy and great music. I don't know why but Aubrey Plaza is in a lot of the few great modern comedies.

Great movie because it's a really unique mix of seriousness and comedy, but I would've loved a few huge laughs. Super solid movie.

Murder on the Orient Express9

This is a great movie. It may not be enjoyable for everybody, but it is great. It was a relentless investigation and logical inquiry, that ends with amazing music and scenery that equal the greatness of the ideas the protagonist must deal with before he leaves the train and re-enters society. This was a movie that could have easily never been made, and was risky to make because it is complex throughout, and in this sense it was a huge gift from the creators who would have made money creating a senseless action film.

Jobs8
Nov 22, 2017
Kutcher was the best Jobs. Interesting, fast-moving, well-directed and acted. Should've been 3 hours long. One thing I do like about the other Steve Jobs movie was the incredible meanness was palpable, although I didn't enjoy Fassbender's delivery. Sorkin's version is more like an edgy music video--it tries to be great but in the end, the script is a pop-culture rendition with tons of emotions shoved into each scene.

Blade Runner 20496
Oct 8, 2017
Looks good, moves slow, and doesn't reward with a good plot. The plot touches on themes but doesn't explore them. The original Bladerunner was awkward and this one is even moreso. The original Bladerunner did have at least a core message that was pretty new and very satisfyingly conveyed. What can I say, the director has the same lackings in every movie and did it again in Bladerunner 2049. At least we got a decent sequel that is beautiful.

Way better than The Big Short (which was pretty good). How can people not love this movie? The jungle stuff was a bit boring but the story was such a huge rollercoaster, it's just awesome. Not sure if anyone noticed but the directing was perfect too----so perfect I believe it's hard to notice. Long live the McConnaissance and Bryce Dallas Howard killed it!!

Super deep, amazing villain, awesome movie. Although heavy handed and blunt, the substance is even better than the style, which is good with a handful of bad patches.

This movie is so close to being amazing. It shows some really good direction by Keanu Reeves and good acting by Tiger Chen. There's not an excessive amount of fighting and the fights seem fast and furious or dramatic. Most of Keanu's acting is terrible in this movie but not all of it. He's just too stiff but he pulled the voice off nicely. More than anything, this movie has a great story, although it might not be obvious to everyone who sees the movie. It really is a great script, with the journey of a man through so many discoveries---corruption, power, virtue, selfishness, purpose, and more. The villain challenges the hero into becoming the hero in multiple instances, which is very rare and awesome. When Hollywood inevitably has to do another remake, I think they would be smart to remake this film.

Turbo Kid8
Apr 22, 2016
This movie would be bad if you think it's not a low budget B-movie retro pastiche. What's great is that it had everything I wanted and it delivered---heroism, awesome music, and some emotional connections built between characters. Even a few surprises here and there. The fighting can be skipped over, and everything else could've been better, but they never had the money for it and that was never the goal. This is just a good, feel-good movie, and that's pretty rare.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice9

This is just one of the best action movies ever. I would agree the characters' arguments and feelings could have been given more time, but other than that everything is superb. The music, the acting, the aesthetics, and most of all the story. I'm convinced this movie receives low scores because it gives so much to think about, without telling you what to think. Other minor flaws are in the film. The subtle plot-based comedy is great too. I found this movie to be thrilling with a lot of people fighting for something, each person with a different topic. Also, I hated Lex Luthor's actor in the trailers, but loved him in the movie.

Solid movie and a very interesting biographical story. Acting and cinematography are superb. The music is barely there and if a few things scene-wise were changed a bit this movie would be one of the best ever.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show8

There's so much good, and so much bad, and so much that is both at once. Not a perfect script, but what's more shocking than the plot is the perfect premise of the film, which says more about humans than either characters' spoken words alone. I've never seen a movie that is so charismatic in it's extreme weirdness, and it uses a main villain who is at once sexually liberating but hedonistic and maniacal. Like many other good movies, it ends by leaving a new view of the world on the viewer's mind, left for us to sort out the good and the bad. What kept in my mind after seeing it was that beyond the ridiculousness, there is so much truth in the film, which could be felt but not described until much more thinking. Other aspects worth mentioning are the occasional great songs along with a mixture of movie "styles" that is if not unique, uniquely effective. This movie feels much better in retrospect than while watching, but the music or Tim Curry's acting can keep the fan going. Despite the movie's flaws, this is probably one of the best movies ever made.

The Big Short7

I might have been too excited to see this film. The acting was great, especially Carell. The jokes weren't funny, the music wasn't good or well-blended, and the events weren't exciting, but were a little shocking. Overall I think it's the best documentary (without graphs) but nowhere near the movie it could have been. A more effusive focus on the dramatic, stressful, tense moments or the joys and excruciating wierdness of everything would have been great. The directing and editing certainly weren't bad, I just imagine that the scenes evoked more emotion in the makers of this film than in me. Pointless complaints would be that 1) we didn't even get to see the outline of Margot Robbie's breasts (why am I paying theater prices??) and 2) the government's role in the crisis wasn't mentioned at all---and although I'm sure this is pretty consistent with the book, it's still irritating to me. Definitely hope Leo finally gets his oscar for this one.

Really great movie--I would rate it higher if I found more depth in the script instead of the good small-town story it has. Other people say this movie is "hypnotic" and I agree. A good tragedy movie for Netflix binges. On a side note, I should add that the interrelationships of the characters is really something that rings true to life and seems like a good source of insight to American life.

Hot Tub Time Machine9

This movie is funny but above all it has the greatest energy and it has a heart to the story that is rarely paralleled. And those END CREDITS !!!! If you don't feel deeply connected to this movie, then unfortunately you probably will in the next ten years, but that's why it's great. This movie has love, heartbreak, time-travel, failure, sex, redemption, breasts, and memories that characters can't forget.

Predestination9

Simply one of the best time-travel movies ever. Some people I know thought the movie dragged on in the beginning, but I found it interesting for most parts and then halfway through, it becomes an unforgettable exhilarating experience. The pure genius in how this plot was expanded from the original script is amazing and all the acting involved is spectacular. There's really nothing wrong with this movie unless you want a more anthem-style soundtrack and a faster introduction. Normally I hate movies but this is an example of what movies can do.

The cinematography was awesome, and it's the perfect movie for showing what teenagers do in a rich nice laid-back environment. Totally pointless aside from that, however.

Southland Tales10
Aug 28, 2015
Easily one of the greatest movies ever made. It's intricate and allegorical in biblical proportions, and it has tons of flaws which are insignificant in comparison to what it accomplishes. If you like movies that are hard to follow and have a lot to say about society, while having an almost mystical destiny as a part of the plot, then this is the movie for you. The acting is bad (but entertaining), the jokes are crude, and the whole movie is very heavy-handed about it's message (not subtle). The black humor is great, the visuals are well-done and the music is amazing. This movie actually feels like a religious experience and will remain one of the most under-appreciated movies of all time.

Good People8
Apr 15, 2015
Solid movie. The gangsters had some views on honor that made it more interesting than other gangster films I've seen. I didn't find it boring at all, it kept changing continuously and it was suspenseful when it should've been. I'm a James Franco fan but this might be the worst I've seen him and he was completely serviceable. Overall this is a tactically complicated story with an underwhelming couple as the main characters---but after all, they're supposed to be normal people with strange choices at hand.

This is an underappreciated typical movie, because I found it to have an unusual amount of grounded emotions. I just saw Lethal Weapon and that movie is terrible compared to this, but receives a much higher rating. I'm not a big action movie person, but even here there is Statham taking down multiple people has some big explosions with chase scenes, but it's not Transporter 2, and some people don't like that. James Franco particularly made an effortlessly deep character that makes a normal guy a great villain. The acting wasn't bad for anyone, really--This is just a solid movie.

This movie is a bit of a mess, but I loved the first one and I think people are just demanding a lot more polish with their shi**y modern comedies. Compared to other comedies I've seen, this was easily just as funny, fun, and cliched. The running jokes are great, and it had even less disgusting humor than the first. Maybe because the beginning of this movie isn't good, everyone hates the rest of it? Who cares, I'm glad this movie came out.

The Interview8
Dec 27, 2014
Awesome movie. Easily one of Rogen/Franco's best, another quality delivery. Anyone who can't see the humor in this movie is only seeing the basic shock humor and not the intelligence that shows up often in Rogen movies. Acting could've been better but it's still better than Lord of the Rings. I particularly liked the many subtle political points this comedy reveals which I think accurately depict political economics and the dilemmas individuals have within both societies. More to think about than Hunger Games 1, that's for sure. And the music and camera work was fantastic.

Pain & Gain8
Oct 16, 2014
This will always be Michael Bay's best film, and I really don't like his films. You can tell from the first 5 minutes this is a great movie. The only reason this movie is not perfect is because it was done on a very low budget, but it still looks great. Sure they could have re-tried some acting scenes, and the movie has pacing issues, as well as a hard time making this dark comedy actually funny. But guess what? People will be talking about Pain & Gain a lot longer than Transformers 2. Pain & Gain turns the mirror on America in the best way a Hollywood movie can, and it has a lot to say. And that music.... "I'm big.... ...I'm HOT!" Interesting note: Michael Bay's favorite movie is "Raising Arizona", and this is unbelievable until you've seen this movie.
