One of the worst movies I have ever seen. The only thing good about it is Carey Mulligan's performance. Everything else about it **** especially the directing.
I thought this film was stupid and parts disgusting, like the Kazak fertility dance. Prepare yourself to be grossed out over the latter. I was. Spend the hour and a half watching just about anything else instead. You'll be doing yourself a favor.
I hate sappy movies, but this is no sappy movie. The genuine emotions this film conveys will penetrate all except the most hardened of hearts. It had me in its grip every minute of the way.
This film is based on an absurd premise. If you buy this premise, you may be pleased with it. I, myself, am too grounded in reality, so I didn't dig it.
Oh no, not another movie about racism in American! Although this in not a bad flick, it is basically boring. I ended up clipping my toe nails while watching it, and didn't miss a thing.
Could they have made LBJ and Lady Bird look any uglier? Part of the problem is casting and the rest makeup. Casting Woody Harrelson as LBJ was a ridiculous idea and the makeup person absolutely flunks. I can't comment on the rest of the movie as this was such a turnoff that I couldn't get further than the first fifteen minutes.
There is no question that First Man is a high quality movie. First Man is probably the most realistic account of space travel ever made. It really captures the difficulty involved with the Apollo 11 mission, and makes you feel like you are right there with the astronauts. Great direction by Damien Chazelle, fine performances by Ryan Gosling and Claire Foy, and some of the best hand-held camera work I have ever seen. Highly recommended.
I'm not a fan of Spike Lee movies as he is too obsessed with racial issues. I would dismiss this film as just more of the same if it wasn't for the ending which makes the film relevant and important for the current times.
This is a well-made film with a lot of visual appeal, but comic book stories aren't my cup of tea. I also had some difficulty understanding what was going on as many of the characters spoke with African accents. As a result, I bailed after about 40 minutes.
The Wife reminded me of the movie 45 years, only that I found the latter far more interesting cum haunting. An excellent performance by Glen Close, but the movie just gets a shrug.
While there are a lot of things to like about this movie (the performances, the costumes, the sets), the story line is not one of them. Neither is the background music which at times I found quite annoying. Altogether the film tries to be too clever by half and in the end falls flat on its face and just becomes tedious. I ended up wishing I had made a different choice for my film fare.
There is some very good cinematography in this film and it gives the viewer a real feeling what it is like to live in modern day India. Regarding the story and the acting, I was less enthused. Still I think it's worth one's while.
A movie about a rich guy who fancies himself an actor but who has no talent and no one will hire him. So he produces, directs, and stars in his own movie. Why was this movie made? Is it that important or compelling a story to be made on film? No on all counts.
I'm truly puzzled why this very intelligent movie didn't get better reviews overall as it is of high quality and very entertaining with one of the best performances by Jessica Chastain that I have seen.
A very good film. However, it worked better for me as a comedy and it got too serious in the last forty minutes. An outstanding performance by Saoirse Ronan.
This is one weird movie! I'm not sure if it is a social satire, black comedy, horror film, or all three rolled into one. Unless you really like weird, and I'm not sure that I do, I wouldn't spend time on this film.
I loved this movie. Before seeing it, I thought that Michelle Williams' performance would be the only worthwhile aspect of the film (with a critics Metascore of 65), but it has a lot more going for it. Eddie Redmayne was fine and Emma Watson is good as well in a minor role. But what surprised me the most was the charming story line, although I don't how historically accurate it is. Definitely worthwhile to watch.
The best movie of 2016 -- two outstanding performances by Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, excellent direction, and a story that will charm the socks off you. Sometimes it really is hip to be square, if you can surrender your cynicism about the world for two hours.
A pretty boring film. I really don't know why the critics fussed so much about it. The cinematography is good and Isabelle Huppert is fine, as always, but I couldn't wait for it to end.
Just calling this a movie about **** revenge is a gross oversimplification as the situations and characters are complex. Typical of French movies, this film has every permutation and combination of sexual relationships. Overall, this isn't a bad movie but there are better ones out there to spend your time on.
Kate Beckinsale is good and the costumes in this movie are great, but I think it will appeal mostly to fans of Jane Austin films about 18th century British upper class society, their lives and loves. I'm not.
While it is fashionable to pan this movie, a fine performance by Dakota Johnson and some good cinematography save it from being a complete disaster. On the whole, though, it remains of interest primarily to S & M enthusiasts.
Although not without some entertainment value, strange is the operative word for this film, and you really have to be receptive to something very unusual in order to truly like it. As for me, it was a bit too odd for my liking.
An well-acted, well-directed film with a compelling plot. It really has to be viewed twice to be fully appreciated but, even then, does not become a must see. Still, it is worth your time.
A mediocre movie. Perhaps the best aspect is Natalie Portman's portrayal of Jackie Kennedy, but there were better performances in the past year. Overall, there have been too many movies made of the Kennedy presidency and his assassination, and we didn't need another one. This one is from Jackie's perspective, but it really isn't that revealing of anything we didn't know already. The worst thing about this film is probably the casting. Apart from Portman as Jackie, nobody else is credible.
A well-directed and well-acted film, but if you're not African-American or gay, you might have difficulty identifying with any of the characters in this movie.
Oh no, not another coming of age movie! I don't think I can stand watching another one as they are all pretty much the same with the boy or girl coming to grips with sex and the accompanying emotions and situations. This movie has chick flick written all over it. You've been warned, guys.
If you are looking to be entertained, stay as far away from this movie as you can. It is well-acted and directed but it is a bleak, depressing slice of life. I wish someone had clued me in beforehand as had I known, I would happily have given it a miss.
Two alien octapuses travel to Earth in a giant egg and share the secrets of time with humans by squirting black ink onto the wall of their on-board fish tank. This film really makes you appreciate Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
If Alicia Vikander had a bigger role in the movie, I might have stayed with it longer. But as she didn't and as I didn't find the plot interesting, I gave up on it early on.

Having heard the reviews, I thought this movie would be absolute garbage. However, I found it to be a somewhat entertaining and occasionally charming account of unrequited love. I particularly liked Ginnifer Goodwin's performance. However, for the most part, the movie is a bore.
The critics got it right. This movie is a clunker. Juliette Binoche gives a good performance, as always, but that is the only good thing I can say about it. The plot line about an English teachers personal war with an art teacher about whether literature or painting is the superior medium is dumb. Furthermore, haven't we seen movies about a self-absorbed alcoholic writer before? Give this movie a miss. It is boring and demands great perseverance to see it through to the end.
I don't see why this movie got such good reviews as there is very little of interest. Nothing here really stands out. The plot line is strange and there are no exceptional performances.
This movie is nothing short of brilliant. I must confess that I understand the financial markets being a trader myself, so I have a first hand understanding of a world where the only thing that counts is profits. With that said I was in awe of the acting in this movie, notably Steve Carell and Christian Bale, the screenplay and the direction. It tells an important story and tells it well, with humor at times without which is would all have been too depressing.
Although I almost threw in the towel after half the movie as one can only take so much of Steve Jobs as **** However, the second half more than redeemed the entire effort when it showed him with a touch of humanity and gave a reason for why he was the way he was. Wonderfully directed, superbly acted, and beautifully filmed, it had me lingering on afterwards while watching the credits roll.
I'm not a NASA engineer but the scientist inside me is screaming that this plot is far-fetched. If a movie isn't near being realistic, it has to be a great work of art for me to take it seriously, which The Martian isn't. Sorry.
I will lay out my bias. I'm not a fan of action movies. I find them mostly to be mindless garbage. Although this film has a philosophical core, it is still 99% action. As such I really did not care for it. However, I will acknowledge that it is very imaginative and well-directed with great stunts and cinematography. I'm still glad that I watched it to see what others are talking about, but if you hate action movies like me, you probably won't like it either. A 6 is the best I could do.
