Gags and antics aside, this is a film about self-actualization. It succeeds at being stand-alone and is fun, fast-paced and instantly enjoyable. Watch this with your daddy.

A breathtaking and harrowing descent down one of the scariest first halves in movies in the 21st century finally lets loose in its second act and turns midway into a documentary about astral projection. It has its moments of creep and moments of schlock, too but it is never failing in its attempts of horror trickery.

As it is turning out, 2010's almost a nice year for remakes (Predator. The Crazies). But when I first heard of the remaking of Karate Kid, I dissed it off almost completely. I mean, does the John Avildsen classic need a makeover when the 1984 film itself is so iconic? Can we really like the changes (wax to jacket, white kid to black kid, Pat Morita to Jackie Chan) and call it a standalone remake? Will Jackie Chan give a strong supporting role? Is Jaden Smith going to give a performance that'll mark his name in the Young Hollywood A-list? Will it show off fighting scenes that could match the original's? Will there be tweeny kissing scenes (eww)? Is it going to be inspirational? Is Lady Gaga included in the soundtrack? The answer to all these, my friends, is yes.

And what a message. I feel sorry for the adults who labeled Toy Story 3 a "kid's stuff" immediately and didn't take the chance to see it. It may seem like an already familiar description, but Toy Story 3's astonishing mish-mash of humor, suspense and emotion is for everyone. And has an animated film lately ever touched your heart so deeply? With every Pixar film, the heartache hurts more and more. But oh, what sweet heartache! I don't know about you but it sure did pierce right through me.

District 9

First impression, wow. Just... wow. A gore fest, shaky documentary, stunning sci-fi and drama all in one, here is the first sci-fi splatter drama in ten years that can be considered a masterpiece. Directed by a newcomer named Neill Blomkamp, District 9 shows us a story of freedom centered on the turning point in the life of Wikus (a surprising performance by non-professional Sharlto Copley), a field operative fresh from promotion. He's hired to lead the eviction of the "prawns" (the creepy aliens) but something terrible happens to him that will change his life forever. A Blair-Witch-Project-meets-Independence-Day film, District 9 demonstrates beautiful storytelling. It's filmed in a documentary style that would recall Cloverfield. I guess that film contributed a lot to Neill Blomkamp, who deserves a best director Oscar nomination for this one. It's a blast directorial debut and I'll be patiently waiting for more from this Canadian filmmaker. District 9 is a very big achievement in terms of its technical qualities. The visual and sound effects were all complex. Add to that the voices of our sympathetic aliens. The pacing was also brilliant. All action, the film becomes more thrilling after the twist that'll very much change the life of our main character. Above all, District 9 is one of the best of the sci-fi genre. It's moving and terrifying (not to mention totally humble) in the same degree and I just love it. It's more than what most of us expected.

Orphan manages to build great tension in such a thin premise while showcasing well the talents of the young cast - especially Isabelle Muhrman (a nightmarish incarnation of child creeps from the past) and Aryana Engineer. To sum it all up, though, it's an undercooked and tired thriller.

Regarding the buzz 'bout it paying tribute to the classics, I agree with it. I saw the clear influences of Polanski especially his film Rosemary's Baby. It didn't meet my expectations but I still thought it was good. It's clever and the tension slowly builds up until you're left with a disturbing and inexplicable climax.

There's not one scene in this flick that won't remind you of other (and better) horror films. If in some points it manages to creep, there's no doubting the heavy cliche it bears that would make it easily the most forgettable horror film of 2010.

Fabulously backed up by a quirky supporting cast (especially Stanley Tucci and Patricia Clarkson) and a clever script, Emma Stone shines throughout. Her performance is one of the year's best and with Easy A, as the film suggests, she's on our map.

I called it a rarity because of many aspects - very few films carry the easygoing nature of the film, and the comedian-studded casting, it's surprisingly fun, it's all about food and (best of all) it's as weird as it gets. After watching it, you can proudly say that you haven't seen anything quite like it before but you won't see anything quite like it either.

A fashionista's dream came true, The September Issue is a lovely documentary about two figures (Wintour and Coddington) on a heavy mission. It's the less cynical side of The Devil Wears Prada (2006) but still highly entertaining.

If you look at the two latest Hollywood takes on Greek mythology (Percy Jackson and this snorefest built around epic cliches), Clash of the Titans may be set closer to the period. The wonderful talent carrying it were wasted by a script that's obviously trying too hard. It has nothing to boast but spectacular visual flash. But what I discovered here is that there is range in Sam Worthington's acting. If he wants to keep up the claims that he'll become the next Russell Crowe, he should go more to dramas than in epics that give no damn to mood and character.

Well, y'know... It was a brilliant idea to pursue it with Natalie Portman in mind you know. She was just amazing and her depth! Oh how she scared the **** outta me? Dear Lord, your movie is the horror film of the year because of Portman and... Barbara Hershey! Scariest lady since Sylvia Ganush! Damn, I also commend Vincent Cassel and Mila Kunis! But oh, I couldn't put into words how much I admire this. Forget the Step Up 3D ****, this is the best dance movie of 2010!

While the the sharp dialogue, calm direction by David Fincher and edits from past to present and vice versa were expectedly impressive, nothing takes away the spotlight from Mr. Eiserberg whose bravura performance as the world's youngest billionaire is arguably the best movie performance of 2010.
